We booked on the Through The Ages tour, our guide Karla was brilliant, she was extremely knowledgeable and made the tour great fun and interesting. Her enthusiasm throughout the tour was fab. Shall definitely go back and do the Gold Mining tour.
You need good footwear as its muddy and wet in the mines and it was a cool 13 degrees inside the mine today.
We arrived early, but there was plenty to see in the time before our tour started. There was also provisions for making your own hot or cold drinks.
Would highly recommend a visit.

There had been a storm in the area only the night before so the old mine workings would have been very wet so we decided to stay above ground.
For £5 we were able to read about the history of the gold mine which closed down in 1939 as it was un-economic to continue. The mystery is how did the Romans know there was gold there? Presumably the ancient locals informed them. The old tools and equipment are in situ to view in order to get a good idea of working conditions.

Excellent tours. Both Eddie and Nevil were really good tour guides. Well done. I enjoyed the fact we were moving around a lot too.

We arrived very early for our guided Mining Through the Ages tour, intending to have a walk in the surrounding woodlands, this we did and although it was raining, we really enjoyed the grounds and the views, there were information boards all around explaining what would have been in each area. We were very lucky that the rain stopped and the guided tour couldn't have been better, Nevil our guide was extremely knowledgeable, and had a lovely way of imparting facts , he was also amusing and involved the young children on the tour, thus keeping their interest.
I would recommend a visit, however bear in mind that as stated in the guides, there are a lot of steps.

The guide was very informative. Brilliant tour.
There are steep steps but no rush. Phil always waited.
I am a claustrophobic and had a word with our guide before the tour, he put my mind at rest.
Once in the mine you could clearly see your way very airy and you can see the exit.
It was a hot day but the mine was refreshing (for those who feel the cold maybe a light coat I wore jeans and wished I hadn’t as not cold enough, after reading previous reviews about what to wear).
A good insight into the many years past up until not so long ago! 1938.
Hard to believe what went on.

Incredible history in this hidden gem. Mining through the ages tour was fascinating and out tour guida was very knowledgeable, approachable and inspiring. Thank you for an excellent experience.
My son got very busy trying to find some gold in the stream and was even successful 😀
The mini museum and all the buildings provide you will loads of information about the history of gold mining in Wales.
Highly recommended for everyone.

The site has a very interesting story to tell and the guides do a great job of igniting one's imagination and helping visitors to see what disappeared a long time ago, of which only tiny traces remain.
However, beyond the lively story telling and a brief diversion underground, there isn't an awful lot to see as a reward for a lot of walking. There are some old workshops from the 1930's and the winding gear but these are more a backdrop to the visit. Overall, the site feels under-invested in as it lacks a proper exhibition space that might bring the place alive. The Roman jewellery displayed are replicas though this is not made clear and there is little attempt to give a sense of what has been discovered and perhaps dispersed around national museums.
It would appear that the National Trust has gone about increasing revenue from the site by sub-dividing the experience into two tours. Therein lies the issue that at £12 a tour, Dolaucothi doesn't represent very good value for money or efficient use of precious sightseeing time. It would probably take combining the two tours and charging perhaps £15 to persuade me to change my verdict and then I would still expect a better interpretation centre.
My tip would be to pay the £5 site entry and do the self-guided tour.

An entertaining and interesting day at the Gold mine taking in two of the tours which with the Roman Tour in the morning led by Eddie and then followed the Mining Through The Ages tour led by Neville
Both tours were really interesting with lots of information and a fair bit of fun as well. Both guides showed how proud they are of the location and the mines
Access to the Roman Tour is up the hillside and then further climbing and a walk to return to the main area so wear sturdy boots. The Mining Through The Ages tour is up some steep steps and then back down some equally steep but a different set of steps
We didn't allow enough time to do the walks on the 2500 acre estate so will be back again.
A great day and very highly recommended

We were really impressed with this National Trust experience. Fascinating history and some interesting artefacts on display . The tour was the highlight and our guide was knowledgeable and superbly engaging. An unexpected gem!

Will I be able to take my nearly one year old on this tour and would she be able to walk it or can I carry her in a carrier ?

No, it’s quite damp, drippy and fairly hard to walk in some parts, I would say not suitable for a one year old, but for children 5 plus it would be ok

Are dogs allowed on both tours and is it much colder under ground? Its a really warm summer and we probably will wear shorts and short sleeves. Would a long sleeve top be enough?

I agree that a long sleeve top would be fine. My husband was wearing a short sleeved t shirt but he doesn’t really feel the cold. There weren’t any dogs the day that we went.

Hello,
The access to the site is up quite a steep drive, we do have limited parking at the top of the site, and you are welcome to use it or as a drop off point. We have the 'short tour' available daily, this is a half hour tour on the level into one of our Victorian mines. It is possible to take wheelchairs and mobility scooters into this mine. If you have any other questions please call our welcome & membership team on 1558 650809 opt 1
Do you have to pre-book the mine tours??

We have two Labradors can we bring them? I appreciate not on the tours but what else would we be able to see/do. Your web site keeps crashing on me?

there are walks to be had that are separate from the mines . I'm sure dogs on leads would be welcome .
