This is a battlefield trail taking in 10 stations where you will see ammunition magazine, anti-aircraft batteries, pillboxes and bunker structures along the Wong Nai Gap in what is today the Tai Tam Country Park on Hong Kong Island. It is also the northern part of the Tai Tam Country (loop) Trail. The Wong Nai Chung Gap Trail is 2.8 km in distance, paved throughout and mostly flat with a slight descend of 50 metres from start to finish, making this one of the easiest hikes you'll find in this area of the city.
The trailhead is found just before the Parkview Residential Towers on Wong Nai Chung Gap Road, at the same small carpark where you find the Hong Kong & Wilson trailheads. The trail is very well marked with direction signs and each of the 10 stations has an posted information boards, describing the war relic, important notes about battles faced here as well as the allied soldiers involved in the heavy fighting that took place here during the Japanese invasion in Dec 1941.
Along the trail, you will see not only important historic war relics but nice vegetation as well as outstanding viewpoints of the Wong Nai Gap area, Happy Valley, the Hong Kong Skyline, Victoria Harbour and the Kowloon Skyline in the distance.
Note: You can use the Hiking Trail HK app on your mobile to follow the trail but in all honesty it is not really necessary due to the very good trail signage throughout. Do note that Stations 9 and 10 are back up the Wong Nai Gap Road around, almost directly across from the Hong Kong Cricket Club. They are situated on both sides of the Esso petrol station, these are the only two that roadside. The first 8 stations are back on the main trail within the Country Park.
Note: War history buffs will find this to be a rewarding hike and trail. You may also enjoy seeing the Pinewood Heritage Trail, seeing the war relics in the Lung Fu Shan Country Park on the northwest side of Victoria Peak. On the Kowloon side, try the Devil's Peak Battery and Redoubt as well as the Shing Mun War Relic Trail on the old Gin-Drinkers Line just south of the Shing Mun Reservoir.
Note: For those interested in Hong Kong's best viewpoints, you can combine a visit to the Wong Nai Chung Gap Trail with an ascend up to Jardine's Lookout which is a 1 km climb up the shared Hong Kong and Wilson Trail mentioned above. From 430 metres, this is one of the very best viewpoints of the HK's famous skyline and Victoria Harbour. Do this detour hike first, descend back from where you came and you'll be at the start of the Wong Nai Chung Gap Trail, where you can then do the easier battlefield hike.

This isn’t a long hike but the number of steps, up and down, does make it more challenging than we first thought it would be. Atop/near Jardine’s Lookout there are spectacular views across the city and much of the rest of the wall towards Quarry Bay also provides beautiful vistas over the south of the island too. Good weather for it now as well, finally not too hot!

My grandfather was stationed in HK and taken prisoner by the Japanese in WW2 so I really wanted to do this walk. Unfortunately, I left it to the last day of my holiday and there was a torrential downpour. As I was unlikely to return for some time I decided to do it anyway.
As other reviewers have stated the walk commences at the car park across the road from the main entry to Hong Kong Parkview. I caught a taxi there to make it easy.
Although the path had been affected by the recent typhoon it was still a relatively easy walk. It is mostly down hill and has a number of places to stop and rest. It was very wet the day I went with ankle deep water in parts. However, this would be very unusual. The views on a clear day would be fantastic.
I found the walk and the boards at each of the Stations very interesting. Reading the stories and seeing the terrain and wartime relics gave me a greater understanding of the struggle for HK.
The walk ends near a bus station where buses leave for Central. As an alternative, it is about a 4km walk to Wan Chai which I did. It is all down hill and connects with an exercise track through some parkland.

This is my unexpected trail after Dragon’s Back trail. My friend told me if this trail only need 2 hours. Compare with Dragon’s Back trail, this trail only half way of it, it won’t be a big problem for me. But, I didn’t check and find out more information about this place. The trail to the peak are made by stairs. It’s about 45% or the trail literally stairs. Climbing stairs more tired for me, and that time we did during the day. Pretty hot and extremely tired. The weather extremely change on the top, windy and cloudy. But the landscape hypnotize me to stand there forever. My advice if you want to try this trails is preparing your legs to climb the stairs.
P.S: The first point of this trail in Tennis Court on your way to Refusal Bay Beach.

Back in February 2017 I had a couple of days stop over in Hong Kong on my way to New Zealand so decided to do a walking tour.
I joined up with Martin Heyes and another walker in the centre of Hong Kong and we made our way by bus out to the Wung Nai Chung gap area. We spent about 4 hours walking the trail with Martin giving us the benefit of his knowledge of the actions here in WW2 and an overview of life in Hong Kong in general. It isn't a difficult walk but there are some up and down parts and a number of steps. However, the scenery and views were lovely and worth the effort just on their own.
It is a walk that you could arrange for yourself with a bit of prior research but Martin saves you the bother and added information you would not get just from Googling - and he was very good company.

We thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour with Martin Heyes. We were surprised to see that many of the wartime relics survived and are situated in areas we drive by all the time! Martin was extremely knowledgeable about Hong Kong's WWII history and we loved his passion! Thank you, Martin!

We spent over 4 hours with Martin Heyes - the area and battle expert tour guide. He was simply awesome - truly 5 *****'s. We really enjoyed Martin a lot and the content and background he provided. We communicated before we arrived in Hong Kong battle to get more details of my father-in-law's actions while in the Hong Kong so he could add more relevant content, which he did.
This tour provided the background and thorough information regarding Imperial Japanese Army's attack launched in December 1941 in Hong Kong and in particular, on Hong Kong island. This was very personal to us as mentioned - my husband's father fought in the battle, was wounded and captured, serving over 3 and a half years in captivity. He also won a medal.
There were also some great views of the harbours in spots.
Martin even did additional research with his contacts to provide a complete summary on our dad's Military Medal citation and we likely saw the very location of where he risked his life for all of us.
We are all seniors and managed the walk fine. We truly understand what the battle must have been like. Nicely done by Martin, we thank him immensely.

I went to this trail to accompany my son who is a history buff. We were a bit lost at the start and taking the longer and difficult trail uphill before realising our mistake and retreated back. Fortunately we found the right trail near the parking lot opposite Parkview hotel.
The trail is nice and easy, not difficult even for an inexperienced hikers. However there are couple of stairs and uneven surface hence might be a discomfort for those with knee problems.
The trail is complete with information boards at every station. There are a number of shelters for you to take a rest and enjoy your surrounding.
To get there you can catch #6 bus from Queen's Road East and disembark in front of petrol station. If you want to start at station #1 I suggest you hail a cab to Parkview hotel if you want to save energy and avoid 30 minutes walking uphill.
Alternatively, you can start backwards from station #10 all the way up to #1 and going back by cab from the hotel.
Overall, a recommended trail for WWII enthusiasts.
