Most people associate the ending of the Civil War with Lee’s surrender of the Virginian Army to Grant at Appomattox, certainly one of the defining moments of the conflict. However, the final events of our nation’s most tragic period also include Johnston’s subsequent surrender of the Old Tennessee Army to Sherman at Durham Station, Taylor’s surrender to Canby in Alabama, and, finally, the capture of Jefferson Davis near Irwinville, Georgia. The latter event occurred with Davis firmly on the run after leaving Richmond over a month before, hoping to rally the remaining armies of the Confederacy and continue the fight. With the 1st Wisconsin and 4th Michigan Cavalry separately converging on his route, he was captured by the latter on May 10th, 1865. Taken into custody with Davis were also his wife, private secretary, and Postmaster General John Reagan.
The site is managed by Irwin County and part of the Georgia State Park Historic Site registry. It consists of a small museum, a granite monument at the exact location of Davis’ apprehension, and some short walking paths on thirteen acres. The museum is the main attraction here and although it was a non-digital experience (somewhat refreshing these days) the items displayed were worth at least an hour’s attention. Predictable items such as uniforms, flags, and a bust of the Confederate President share space with a sundry collection of everyday articles such as a spinning wheel, bellows, and piano. There is a brief exhibit of Davis’ life along with a detailed display of his capture. Items from local Civil War veterans give the collection an appropriate local, personal touch. A brief visit to the granite stele at the site of capture and subsequent walk around the nature paths completed a worthy (four-hour long round trip) visit. A small selection of books, souvenirs, and wood-carved items for sale in the museum rounds out the experience.
Overall, this was the fourth of nineteen Georgia State Park historical sites on my list and continues the universally excellent experience I’ve had so far. As someone who knows next to nothing about the Civil War I’ll admit this was perhaps a bit more interesting for me as opposed to an enthusiast, but I think even an expert on the time period can find stories of interest here. Additionally, the site manager (John Hughes) was absolutely superb. I’ve been lucky to travel the world and have visited literally hundreds of museums and had as many conversations with docents; the experience with him was easily one of my most memorable. He discussed at least a dozen random items I had questions about in exquisite detail and I count the interaction with him as the highlight of my visit. His balanced, objective, and thorough commentary stimulated me to learn more about the Civil War as a new resident to the state.
Rating for the museum and associated grounds: 3.5/5. I’m adding an extra point for Mr. Hughes’ passion and customer service and rounding up to the nearest integer.

This is a little gem of a place in an out of the way area. Glad we stopped as there was so much to see in the museum and the park ranger was very informative and willing to answer questions. There is a small fee but worth it. They also highlight local organizations and towns people who contributed items. There is a nice park to walk around.

We enjoyed the conversation with John as much as the museum. He was very knowledgeable on all things "civil war". The signage on the nature trail is in need of updating.

Visited here with my girlfriend. Museum could use some more audio/visual exhibits but I understand the budget might not be there for that. Grounds were very nice, though because it had rained the night before, I didn't explore much. Very friendly dog who followed us around.

After passing by the exit ramp off I-75 many times, we finally had time to stop and check the site where Jefferson Davis was captured. We were not disappointed in the least. We had the entire place to ourselves so took a leisurely, informative stroll in the park. The state park staff member on duty at the museum was very helpful and the museum did a nice job capturing the history of this event. The nature trail was worth the walk as well - kudos to the Boy Scouts who put this together. This isn't a "knock your socks off" stop, but well worth the time.

On our way from Smarr to Folkston, we detoured off the I-75 to visit here. As we visited before the season opened we had the whole place to ourselves. The information boards were goo and we enjoyed walking around the gardens, viewing the plants and wildlife. A pleasant 30 minutes stroll. Onward to Fokston...

The site where Jeff Davis was captured at the end of the civil war. At 11 miles off I--75 but a nice drive through the cotton-fields of Georgia. Nice interesting place to visit, Good museum, $2.75 entrance fee but worth it. Plenty of information on the events surrounding the capture of Jeff Davis, Educational place to visit .

Had a mini reunion picnic of shipmates from my Navy days at the Jefferson Davis memorial. It was a perfect place. The picnic facilities are good, the park was very well kept. the museum was very interesting. There was a reenactment on this weekend also. Down side is the elevator was out of order..

secluded, quiet, and well maintained. Lots of wonderful artifacts in the museum and an informative movie. The movie is about 20 minutes long and plays in a loop, so it is easy to just go in and watch.

We visited this site where President Jeff Davis surrendered to Union troops from Wisconsin and Michigan. Simple site with a sobering end. The 18 minute video presentation very helpful in understanding the remote site and the events in 1865 that brought the end of the Confederate government. Very helpful staff.
