While the views from the top can be spectacular, especially on a clear day, the rest of the Gateway Arch National Park experience can justify a visit even if the weather is not perfect.
In our modern world of high-speed everything, the tram ride to the top (and back down) is a refreshing return to an era when travel was more meaningful. Additionally, the museum should not be missed as it provides engaging tales of the history of St. Louis and the arch. The only negative aspect is the fact that visitors must pass through a security checkpoint before experiencing most of the interior offerings of the park. (The Old Courthouse was closed for renovations during our visit.)

The Gateway Arch is a very impressive monument. Actually visiting it really allows you to appreciate it as you stand at the base and look at it soaring overhead. There's a cool elevator that curves up and down the arch to/from a small observation room at the top with views west and east of the Mississippi River, although there's not much to see from the elevator, and neither the St. Louis skyline or the East St. Louis industrial park is very impressive (and on the day I went, thick fog made it impossible to see anything). But the overriding question is, why is this one of the 63 National Parks? A National Park is supposed to be a place of natural beauty and features spanning large preserved wilderness and offering a refuge for wildlife. Gateway Arch NP is a small and 100% manmade park with no wildlife or wilderness whose only notable feature is a manmade arch. It doesn't belong in the same classification as Yellowstone or the Grand Canyon, there are other places that do match the National Park definition, and Congress's unexplained recent decision to make it a National Park undermines the whole concept of a National Park as a "special" natural preserve. This isn't the fault of the site itself. My understanding is that the National Park designation resulted in funding used to build the very nice museum on site. But being designated a National Park means Gateway Arch NP must be judged like a National Park, and it falls far short of every other National Park and that's just the reality.

Even though the Gateway Arch is the smallest National Park, it was very enjoyable to walk around the grounds and the visitor center was interesting to learn about St. Louis and how the arch was built. The tram trip up and back was neat to experience as the cars were built with bearings to keep the cabs level as the cars traveled the curve of the arch.

The park is beautiful and a great place to walk around or picnic. The arch is bigger than expected, and the views of the Mississippi River are great.
The visitor center includes a nice little museum, gift shop and cafe. But of course the arch is the big deal here. It’s definitely worth taking the trip up inside the arch despite the hassle. We spent a lot of time just enjoying the whole “bucket list” experience.

Most visitors understandably direct their focus to the Gateway Arch, but the park also offers some beautifully maintained grounds along the riverfront. There is also an very interesting museum inside the visitor center. I still don't think the area meets "national park" standards, but it's definitely a very nice park.

The last time I was in St. Louis, the Arch and park were undergoing major renovations.
I'm so glad we got to visit during our brief pass through St. Louis this time.
We had our pets so just walked outside and the park area. I did go inside to view the GREAT exhibit and learn the history behind the Arch.
The museum shop was also well stocked!
A must see National Park! Don't forget to bring your park passport to stamp!
Enjoy

We were just passing thru St Louis on a road trip. I had been to the top of the Arch a couple of times previously and my travelling companion was scared of heights, so we only took the obligatory photos. Sadly we had just missed the last riverboat cruise of the day, so it was a short walk thru the park before getting back on the road. The sights of the Arch, the river and the bridges are well worth your time.

Very interesting design and construction. Although we prefer the national parks with more nature scenes than manmade structures, the Gateway Arch is worth stopping and viewing.

What is the best time of day to select for riding up in the arch? Do we need at allow extra time if riding the Metrolink light rail from the airport?

About how much total time should we devote to the park if we include the top of the Arch?
Also...did anyone do the Captain's combo with the sightseeing cruise?
