I love that off season it is very private. Nothing much to do here except walk near the water. I let my dogs run. Great for seeing deer etc

Very quiet area and peaceful. With teens it was a bit too quiet. No stores or shops close by - not even a coffee shop or gas station.
The beach was very long for walking and there were few people. The story of the horseshoe crabs was interesting and the DuPont Nature Preserve was worth the visit.
With traffic it took us an hour to get to Rehoboth Beach. We loved the waves there and the Boardwalk.
20 minutes each way to Milford for groceries - so plan ahead.
When there wasn't a breeze the bugs were really bad.

Good for a stroll. No facilities. Very desolate. But you basically have the place to yourself!
In summer it is full of bugs and a little smelly… so not the beach to camp out on and sunbathe!
But we like it in Spring and Fall … peaceful!

Horseshoe crabs have been crawling up from the depths to lay their eggs ashore for over 430 million years. When they began doing this, there was little life on land. Now red knots and other migratory shore birds depend on the eggs to refuel for their long migrations. The crabs themselves have survived every mass extinction on this planet, and continue to come ashore to amaze visitors at Slaughter Beach and other nearby beaches.
The beach itself is a strip of pebbly sand along the Delaware Bay, backed by a quiet town. Beachcombers can find a few interesting shells at times, though mostly there are wave worn pebbles. I found a bit of sea glass, mermaid purses (skate egg cases) and whelk egg cases. The waves are low bay waves, the tourists are few, but varied. We met a bright red headed girl who will likely grow up to be a rocket scientist, and a blond girl from England who might grow up to be curious about science and save the world. Those who come here aren't here for beach umbrellas and suntans, they come for the crabs... the ancient ones with the blue blood.
Some years it is wall to wall crabs on the beach. Some years, you may only see a few. The numbers are highest at full and new moons in May and June; those are the highest and lowest tides of the month. In 2021, beach restoration caused the main mass of crabs to arrive farther north. You can always watch them from home too, on the DuPont Nature Center's Mispillion Harbor webcam. The little nature center itself is well worth a visit. They are not at all busy, so giving them a call when you can't identify something on the webcam is definitely a thing.
No one knows where Slaughter Beach's name came from, it was likely someone's last name. The other areas nearby, like Broadkill Beach, are easier to explain: "kill" is from a Dutch word for creek.
Nearby is Cape Henlopen, a great place to visit the beach or to camp. WWII watchtowers, uilt to last 20 years, still stand, and are climbable. We found the Comfort Inn in Milford to be a good little hotel with a nice breakfast and pool included. On the way back up Route 1, is Medings Seafood, with the huge ship's propellor out front. It is awesome.

We came here three times in our four day trip. On the first day, we were able to walk out and found some nice shells. This is a very rocky beach so water shoes are a must. You will see a lot of horseshoe crabs ( mostly dead).

The beach is pretty quiet so easy to find a spot to sit down. The water looked brown and uninviting and there were some dead horseshoe crab shells along it. It was OK for walking along but the flies came early and often so we didn't stay long. There is a nice building with bathrooms and some picnic tables.

This is a short, quiet pleasant bay beach. Several people were fishing and we enjoyed our beachcombing immensely. It is quite rocky. Restrooms were clean and appreciated. The plaque about the horseshoe crab lifecycle was interesting and we saw a few adult crabs around.
Looked like a good place for kayaking.

If you want nature, fresh air, and the OCEAN, this is the beach for you. It is not the place where you will find crowds, restaurants, boardwalks, or stores. It is peaceful and country like, and that is what we were seeking. We had a wonderful day there in July 2020. Families socially distanced, and the restrooms were clean with only one person when I went in, and she was wearing a mask. There is a pavilion with picnic tables also. Wear water shoes, as the sand is very rocky. There were a lot of horseshoe crabs washed up on the shore, so if you have young children, it is a good idea to do some educating about them beforehand, so they won't be frightened. There is a rocky ridge at the shore line, and it is muddy as the tide goes out. Not a problem, but do need the water shoes. We brought a picnic and had a wonderful time.

We visited for two weeks the end of June into the beginning of July. We LOVED it!! Horseshoe crabs were finishing when we got here and we saw a few live ones. The beach had some dead crabs and debris near the top where high tide is but it wasn’t overwhelming. They have a bit of a funk but you don’t notice it for more than a minute and by the time we left we didn’t notice it at all.
The beach has some rocks but it’s mostly sand. We would recommend water shoes. At low tide it is so low that you can walk out for 1/4 mile and it still isn’t above your knees. The water gets gloriously warm like bath water. The bottom is a combination of sand and mud which furthers the need for water shoes.
In our two weeks, we had one day of miserable flies. A few days where they were slightly bothersome but mostly they weren’t bad. Bug spray didn’t seem to do much against them.
BUT slaughter beach is GORGEOUS. We felt so safe letting our kids go as far as they wanted down the beach exploring. Rarely was there more than another family or two also out. The waves were very gentle most days. The sunsets were beautiful. There is a small playground for cooler days to take the kids. All in all it was a home away from home and so relaxing. We will be back.
