Stunning setting, really fun experience

Absolutely amazing experience! We loved every moment of it. We're huge Middle-earth fans, so there's no better way to experience this Hobbit filming location. But aside from the film connection, it's just a stunning stretch of river. Definitely try to take a swim during the kayaking trip; the water is crystal clear – really beautiful. And our guide was super friendly and knowledgeable. We loved it!!

Beautiful and relaxing trip

Beautiful, relaxing trip down river, with a small portion dedicated to Hobbit filming location. Tour seemed a bit short for what we paid, but was still very nice. Recommend taking water shoes/flip flops and bug spray.

Nice trip down the Pelorus

Good trip down the Pelorus river with our guide, Jade. Nice scenery and calm waters most of the time (sometimes a little too calm and had to bump us off submerged rocks to get going).

Jade talked us through the route and pointed out the LoTR sights along the way. Had a nice cold dip/swim after the bridge and Jade took some nice photos and video clips for us that we got on a USB when we were done.

Only negative were the sandflys but they can't help those - just wear lots of repellant and don't wear perfume etc... as that seems to attract them (as my wife found out).

Would have preferred double bladed paddles instead of single bladed wooden ones, but thats a personal preference.

Less than expected

This trip was booked from 2-6pm. I was picked up from the pelorus campground at 2.15 and dropped back by 4.20. Far shorter than the tile paid for.
The guide did little to tie in the Hobbit experience. I’m addition there was no safety briefing and only one guide who did not wear a safety helmet.
I do not believe this is value for money or that it met the advertised excelsior.

Fun Day on the River

Fun morning out on the river, especially if you're a fan of the Hobbit movies. We are not highly experienced paddlers but had no trouble navigating the kayaks. The trip is very safe and rapids are low grade, so the trip is well suited for families. You do need to be prepared to get wet and get out of the boat on some areas in order to get the kayak over the more shallow areas. Wearing water shoes is a good idea for the times when you need to maneuver the kayak over the shallows. You'll also get wet with water splashing over and/or flipping the boat (depending on your choice of crewmate). The operator has a changing room available at the main office, so bring a change of clothes and look forward to a nice lunch in Havelock afterwards. Our guide (Jade) looked after us well and explained the areas where the Hobbit filming took place. She also gave us great suggestions about the local area. Overall, a very enjoyable day & well worth the money.

Do it if you are a LotRs/Hobbit fan

We had a great time with Jade and Shane on our Hobbit adventure, Jade was fantastic as we were not the strongest kayakers.

She briefed us about the movie locations and made sure we all got the most out of day.

We learnt a little from Shane about the Havelock area, but this information was given whilst he or Jade were driving so it was hard to hear them or feel free to ask questions, so that we didn’t distract them.

But overall, worth giving it a go, the terrain is amazing and level of complexity required is low

A must do in the Marlborough area!!

What a great day out - so much fun!! Took my 10 year old who sat in the front of the kayak while I paddled. She loved the rapids which were easy to manage but enough to have heaps of fun. Our guide Shane was great and provided interesting information about the area and the making of the films during the trip. The scenery is stunning and we had such a good day - highly recommend!!

My daughter had made me promise to do again when we’re next in New Zealand, maybe next year!!

At $185 each this tour is way overpriced. A nice trip in a kayak down the river a lovely guide and a couple of iconic scenes but nothing to justify the price.
