Stunning day trip the Gary. Beautiful scenery, great history from a true local and the best tasting mussels and sashimi I've ever had. Definitely the highlight of our trip.

Had a wonderful day trip to Maud Island on the Toroa most comfortable smooth sea journey I have ever experienced
The weather was perfect Gary Orchard the Skipper was very informative
Loved seeing the Gannet colony with the fluffy fledglings Gary got the boat in close the birds not at all worried Gary spotted a leopard seal sunning itself on a floating jetty You never usually see these seals in Pelorus Sounds
Maud Island well worth the trip given warm welcome and talk about history of Maud Island and the rare species frogs skinks wetta etc from the DOC couple and their 2 young children
Never thought I would ever get up close to a native Wetta
A easy walk through native bush and to the top amazing view
Arrived back in Havelock around 6pm Thank you to Marriet who keep us refreshed with welcome hot drinks Worth while doing this trip

I went on one of the Maud Island trips in Jan 2020.
Along the way, we were lucky enough to see the gannet colony, king shags & a couple of seals.
Maud Island is beautiful and one of NZ’s real gems that must be protected. The walk was easy but the path was a little rocky so good shoes are recommended. The DOC rangers were extremely accommodating and more than happy to share their knowledge with us.
On the boat, Gary and his team were great - Gary provides a bit of commentary along the way, pointing out landmarks etc.
The boat was full and we were fortunate enough to get a seat inside on a hot sunny day.
Gary’s wife made us an amazing homemade lunch with all sorts of good stuff. I recommend paying the extra $ for this lunch.
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and can’t recommend it enough. Thanks heaps for a very memorable day.

We organised a private with Pelorus Tours starting and returning to the jetty at St Omer. The delightfully restored Toroa with skipper Gary took us, my wife and I, and my brother in law, on an informative and entertaining cruise around Kenepuru sound. We visited a wreck that Gary's uncle had originally purchased as a sea going vessel, a shag nesting area, Gary's mussel farm. Along the way Gary regaled us with the history of various points of interest and answers to many questions. Gary and my brother in law, who had holidays in the area when he was young, shared lots of stories. We found the details about mussel farming very interesting and shared Gary's concern about the effects of the pine plantations on sea life. The weather was mostly kind, although the wind was strong in exposed areas. We spent most of the cruise in the wheel house with Gary, making for a very informal and friendly time.
If you are in the area I strongly recommend go with Pelorus Tours and Gary for a pleasant and informative time, and with Toroa, a beautiful wooden vessel to cruise at a comfortable pace.

We went on the Maud Island trip - a full day out to a scientific reserve. It was great - we got within metres of a Gannet Colony with chicks of all sizes, and some getting ready to fly.
On the Island the Department of Conservation rangers introduced us to the special creatures that live here - and we got to handle the wetas and get up close to some skinks, geckos and frogs.
A great day out, though we spent a little long at the Island and had a sick passenger so we were late getting back.

周末跟小孩去钓鱼,船长水平很差,带我们钓的都是一般新西兰岸边可以钓到的小鱼品种,至于蓝雪鱼的收获更少得可怜,差评!

If not my mates insisted, I would rather keep silent about this terrible fishing charter experience.
Last weekend I went fishing at the Sounds with my family and some friends, we got on the boat at Te Mahia Jetty at around 9:30am. Then the skipper brought us to check his mussel farm.
At first the skipper served us his mussels, we were delighted, but then was one and half an hours slow driving on the boat (about 9 knots). After the long waiting, we finally got to the fishing spot. The fishing spot was really disappointing, It was shallow and calm(here I mean lack of oxygen for the fish), I couldn't see any seaweed or rocks along the shore around the spot. At this spot we got couple Spotty and one or two barely legal size Blue Cods. And then the skipper kept trying some where nearby, of course not good at all. I did ask him to somewhere deeper or has more seaweed area, but he refused to go. I can't believe we took 2 hours driving and one and half hours boating to some where the skipper reckons best for fishing spotty, of course it turns out barren!
We had 9 people not including the skipper, we started around 9:30 am and finished the trip around 3:30 pm, we got one Blue Cod home for each person and around 10 Spotty altogether. Some of the Cods I didn't reckon legal size, I tried to find but can't see any ruler on the boat, but the skipper said okay and kept them. I could only took photos for the evidence. On this trip we paid 160 dollars for each adult, my 3 years old daughter was free, he charged my son 80 dollars. So including my wife, I paid 400 dollars for this good at Spotty fishing Charter trip! I was unhappy and I tried to ask the skipper not to charge my 13 years old son, actually he did tried 5 minutes fishing but slept the rest of the trip! But obviously he refused to make a compromise.
I got angry not only the skipper shew us to the Spotty play ground, but the fishing gears he offered! My friend brought 4 rods on boat, the other fishing gear he provided was in very poor condition, you can tell by the rusty hooks, not mentioned the rods
and wheels! The other thing is, he brought just couple decayed Squid and fish for bait! Yes, and a handful chicken meat, to be honest, I know chicken meat works for fishing, but when it comes to a fishing charter, I just can't believe it! Finally we had to use the spotty meat to fish for bait!
I would like to keep silent, but my friends reckon this will only hurt other people if I did't speak out. Hopefully he will take good care of his reputation rather than just money.

SAFETY COMES FIRST!! ! As you brought young children and the weather had increased as we travelled out to a point where it was not practical or comfortable to travel outside the sounds, a decision was made to fish in Beatrix Bay. When returning later that day the waves and wind were blowing over the top of the boat and I knew my decision to keep the boat safe was the correct one. The weather was the determining factor how far we travelled that day and we were not able to go to the better fishing spots in the outer sounds.
The lady that organised this trip invited you as her guest, she caught snapper, a number of good sized blue cod as well as other species and was fishing alongside you.
The skipper observed that you kept changing your fishing tackle, putting on colourful fly's that you had brought with you and some without weights? Blue cod are bottom feeders? This may have been a factor in your fishing success and type of fish caught. Sometimes people have bad fishing day's.
The skipper was shown a photo of a large number of fish caught on another Fishing charter vessel. Our Marlborough sounds fishing rules only allow 2 Blue cod per person fishing and at the end of the day there was 2 blue cod for each person that fished and a number of other species caught as well. All the fish was equally shared out among the group. The other guests caught good fish with our gear and their own, which they had arranged and negotiated to bring beforehand. I apologise if my gear was not up to your liking but i did give you an assortment of hooks and rods to choose from and try on the day.
You did not mention the discount that was credited to your family as you were the only person who expressed a disappointment with your day.

We went out fishing with Gary and were delighted with the friendly, informative trip. As we were the only visitors on board, Gary had time to show us the mussel farms and the wildlife in the Sounds. We then went out further and spent some time fishing. Gary helped us when required, but was keen for us to do as much as possible for ourselves. The kids loved it and their 86 year-old grandmother was thrilled to catch a blue cod. We would totally recommend Gary if you would like a fishing trip.

Had a wonderful day with Mr Orchard. Took a very busy six year old grandson for the tour to Maud Island. The weather was great, the visit to the gannet colony was a definite bonus, no where else in the country would you be allowed so close to nesting gannets, who by the way, were totally at ease. We were all able to handle the geckos, skinks, giant wetters, and cave wetters. There was a wetter motel along the walkway which had some Wellington wetters in residence. Unfortunately this was about the extent of the wildlife to be seen on the island, but the wildlife viewed from Toroa more than made up for islands shortfall. Viewed from Toroa were the shags of various types, spoonbills, swans, little blue penguins, gannets, both at sea and nesting and to top it off a pod of bottle nosed dolphins stopped by to check us out. All in all a great day out don’t expect too much from DOC and you won’t be disappointed however as a tour of the Sounds wildlife Captain Gary Orchard delivers a great package.

We recently booked with Pelorus Tours for a transfer from Te Mahia to Nydia Bay. Ellen was great at arranging all the details and we enjoyed chatting with Gary on board. They were by far the most reasonable of the water taxis who got back to me (half the price of one of the other quotes).
We were on board the Toroa, a beautiful boat, very comfortable and stable.
Thanks Gary and Ellen, would highly recommend,
Carolyn
