Italy, and in particular Tuscany, are rich in smaller, well-preserved historical hamlets. So whoever might be asked if it is worth traveling along the winding and long road that separates this village from the capital of the municipality (ie Pescia) to visit Pontito.
My answer is: yes, well worth it. Of course, it is better if the visit in Pontito is integrated into a glance to other "castles" (that is, ancient fortified villages) of the "Valleriana" valley. And it would be even better if the visit takes place in the context of a hiking trail that includes Pontito. But the hamlet has specific characters, which still justify a visit for those who come from far.
To fully understand Pontito, we must know that today, as the other villages of the municipality of Pescia, it is included in the province of Pistoia; but in the Middle Ages it was subject to the Republic of Lucca; in this regard, it constituted an extreme and secluded outpost of the Republic. It therefore enjoyed a particular care, as the "sentinel" of the borders; which has long guaranteed the importance of the country.
Then decadence has taken place, in recent decades even more radical as the country is remote and without particular resources. This process has meant that not only the ancient settlement is extraordinarily conserved; but that almost no modern annex has been added outside of it.
Moreover Pontito has a peculiar position: it is climbing on the steep slopes of a rounded hill: the hill is wrapped in its houses so as to configure the section of a huge gray cone.
If you then walk into the village, the extraordinary preservation of it and its homogeneous built form will be further evident: both the houses and streets of the hamlet are made of the same gray sandstone, carefully worked.
In short, if you have the chance, visit Pontito: it will add something to your collection of images of the world.
