The boatman does provide blanket for you to cover yourself. However, there is nothing much for you to see in winter. The commentary is conducted in Japanese. I recommend doing it in spring where at least there are some flowers to see.

I bought my ticket via web at Taipei, only for the train and boat. Not include the meal. I think you can visit many kinds of web, just like me, then make right choice.

Hi, you can buy one of the do-it-yourself Nishitetsu packages at Tenjin Station (just inside Solaria Plaza, not far from Mystays). The packages are (a) Yanagawa punting + steamed eel lunch + return train tickets (b) Yanagawa punting + Daizaifu + return tickets (c) Yanagawa punting + return tickets. Depends on how much time you can spend there, as (a) will almost be a a full day trip and (b)/(c) are half day trip. All trasportation from train station to pier and vice-versa are included in the Nishitetsu packages, they will also provide you a rough area map for your own exploration. Steamed eel on rice is signature dish of Yanagawa area and a number of eateries near the canal and pier serves such food. There are also some interesting sightseeing points such as the Ohana Museum if you are interested in the feudal lord of the town. As far as I know, these packages are DIY in nature so there is no English speaking guide available. In fact Yanagawa is a small town, most of the locals can only communicate in Japanese. You may also purchase Nishitetsu ticket and choose your own punting operator instead of the designated one. The cost is roughly the same except there will not be shuttle buses to and from the pier. If English speaking guide is a must then consider to appoint a local guide via tour agency in Hakata (which would be very expensive). I hope the information provided is helpful. Bon voyage!

its Y1500/pax (adult)... it may appear a tad stiff to pay that...but i would tell you its ~70mins long, and the single boatman, talks to you enroute, giving you details on the history, and other info bytes of the area, as he negotiates the canal from start to finish. Personally, i thought it was worth the ride, becoz its scenic, cultural & the history of the area comes alive becoz someone is doing that for you. i'd suggest you go for it....
