This picturesque temple has become one of my favorite locations in Japan. The journey up the mountain requires you to climbs countless stairs but the statues, carvings, shrines, and nature that surround you make the impending cardiovascular explosion worth every step. Once you reach the top you are treated to an astonishingly beautiful view of the valley. I went in November and the trees were all showing their autumn splendor.
If you are able to make the hour long train ride from Sendai, then you should seize the opportunity to make a lasting memory at this magical temple.

Thought i could see some snow view, unfortunately I didn’t though it’s still very beautiful and unforgettable!

立石寺から線路沿いに進むとやがて遮断機の無い踏切が現れる。踏切のこちら側には鳥居があり、神社化と思えばここは山寺千住院。御朱印は「大悲殿」。最上三十三観音のひとつで寺院だと思うのだが鳥居がある。神仏習合の時代もあるし、厳島神社のように弁財天を本尊としながら廃仏毀釈で本尊を大願寺に移動した例や、東京上野の寛永寺のようにお山の御朱印の中に鳥居を持つ弁財天があったりと日本は神と仏が混在している。どこに拠り所を置くかによるが一般的にはとくに気にすることもないのだろう。冬は立石寺の各お堂同様に福の囲いがされている。

It’s took about 20mins to reach Yamadera Station from Yamagata Station. There is a huge map guide to the temple just right outside the station. There are 4 entrances into the temple after crossing a scenic bridge, and need to pay a small fee (JPY300 if remembered correctly) to walk up to top of mountain.
The walk up was a little challenging but achievable, just take it slow and easy. We walked thru the forest covered with tall trees, I was totally immersed in the greenery. As we went higher to the top, the surrounding town and mountains emerge from distance, the view was stunning.
There is limited toilet up at the top, and there is no cafeteria. Remember to bring enough water along before the walk.
It’s a must visit at Yamagata.

Try to reach the place before 10am as there’s less crowded and can have picturesque view. The place is stunning worth the visit !

Yamadera means "mountain temples" and the mountainside has many small and a few large temples built in nooks and crannies along the way up to the mountain top. The hike up to the top and theSenju-In temple is along a stone path with over 1000 steps. It takes about one hour to climb and 25 minutes to descend. The lower steps wind back and forth climbing through a Japanese cypress forest festooned with stone lanterns. About half-way up there is a traditional temple gate with two guardian statues. After you pass through this gate there are more buildings and more maple trees - making the climb sparkling when the maples are changing colours. Most professional pictures of the temple complex are taken in the fall when the reds and yellows are out or in the spring when the maples send forth their green leaves. As the complex opens up you will see several separate buildings. Head to the left to go to the Risshaku-ji Temple and the views of the train station and town through which you passed on the way to the base of the mountain. A must-see experience. After seeing the Risshaku-ji Temple, continue up a few more minutes to the main Senju-in Temple, which is a completely different looking temple that is used more for worship than for the views. It has some magnificent statuary in the foreyard. Many people stop when they get to the Risshaku-ji Temple, but the more interesting temple is the Senju-in Temple. Don't sell yourself short and miss it. You need a few more minutes to let your knees rest before returning down the mountain.

While some people stay in Yamadera town, I stayed in Sendai where there are more things to do and places to stay and eat. It is about an hour ride to Yamadera from the Sendai train station on an express train and you can stow your stuff in a locker at either station if you are travelling on after Yamadera. You can see the Yamadera complex and be back in Sendai by noon if you leave in the morning. It helps beat the heat. Visited 26 November 2018

The series of temples is built along a very steep mountain side with tall, gorgeous pine trees. The view changes constantly as visitors climb the hills. I climbed all the way up quickly. On the return trip, I took all of the side routes with panoramic views. The side routes were the best part of the hike. Spectacular views, and nice cool breezes during the summer.
I recommend the sakura flavored ice cream (the region is famous for sakura fruit) and cold, hand made soba with fresh mountain vegetables (a regional soba specialty). The shops that sell food are small, family-owned places with a friendly old-world atmosphere.
Note: you have to be in good shape to climb the many stairs and back. I don't know if emergency personnel could help if someone has a heart attack along the way. If you are not confident about your abilities to make it up the steep stairs, don't risk it.
