This is an interesting place to learn about the history of metal working and contemporary iron production in the area. Moreover, we had the chance to try some basic smithing!
We learnt about the clay furnaces used in the area, were then patiently guided through the process of turning nails into letter openers. Our teacher adjusts his level of involvement according to each student's wishes, so if swinging the hammer becomes too tiring, or if you need some help with the tongs, he will be kind and helpful.
I will cherish the memory of my trip here, as well as the little paper knife I made!

Not only were we able to learn a little about the process of iron smithing, but we were also able to make our own paper cutting knives out of nails. The instructor and guides gave us some easily understandable background information of iron. They broke down the steps to make the knives into digestible steps and we were easily able to follow along. The instructor also assisted us in perfecting our knives and gave us free ones that he had previously made. My favorite part was sharpening my knife using the sanding machine. At the end of the experience, our instructor told us a little about the grueling process of collecting enough iron sand and the stages of turning the sand into usable iron. It was a great introduction to the history of tatara in the Yoshida area.

I really enjoyed making my own paper knife, having never done something like that before. It was a truly unique experience that I’ll never forget. The insights shared by our guides added to the experience while also giving us a glimpse into the rich history of the practice in the area.

奥出雲のたたら製鉄関連の施設を巡った際に立ち寄りました。
たたら製鉄の伝承という点ではとても意義のある施設だと思います。
未来科学館という名前ですが、展示内容の更新はされていないようなので、昭和の雰囲気が全体から漂い、どこか懐かしい気持ちになりました。

館内には、菅谷たたら製鉄炉の他にも、イギリスのオールドファーニス、日本の洋式高炉の３つの巨大な復元模型があり、とても存在感がありました。最初にビデオ視聴をしてから、館内の見学をしたので、より理解が深まって良かったです。

吉田の市街からは少し離れますが、周囲は公園のようで、駐車場もかなり広い。
たたら製鉄の伝統のほか、イギリスの高炉とかもたぶん実物大の模型があったり、世界の製鉄の歴史まで含む壮大な内容です。

鉄の歴史博物館から、車で5分ほど。こちらには展示物以外にも別の建物の中に工房もあり、そちらで刃物作りの体験をさせて頂けます。とても親切にして頂きました。おすすめです。
