Disappointing. The staff were very nice and attentive, it just wasn't what I expected.
I thought it would be more connected to the kumano Kodo( maybe a bit of history)
A motor boat is not really traditional either.

The ride itself was nice. The scenery is great. Also, everything was well organized despite persistent rain (they sold me a rain coat and trousers for JPY 300). Finally, the boat wasn't crowded and contained only 4 travelers, a guide and a boatman.
The only flaw was that the English pronounciation of the English-speaking guide was so bad, that myself and the other participants could hardly understand a word she said.
Otherwise I would have easily given the tour 5 stars.

新宮駅からバスで30分ほど行った「道の駅熊野川」から熊野速玉大社まで、1時間半くらいの舟下りです。10人乗りくらいの小さいボートで、岩や滝・景色を見ながらゆったり下ります。幸い天気がよく、とても気持ちの良い舟下りを楽しめました。値段はちょっと高いかな。でもおすすめです。

熊野本宮大社から新宮市街へ向かって走っていた国道沿いに、道の駅があったので建ち弱ってみました。道の駅には「世界遺産熊野古道 川の参詣道（熊野川）という看板がありました。
道の駅からは、山々を縫ってゆったりと流れている熊野川を見下ろすことができます。舟下りをしている船もいました。この道の駅を出発して、熊野速玉大社近くの権現河原まで約９０分間の川下りが楽しめるんだそうです。古の人たちが熊野三山の参拝で見た景色を見ることができる、素敵な体験ですね。

フリー切符を使っての気ままな一人旅です。2回目の熊野なので、体験をテーマに観光しました。舟下りは色々な川で体験できますが、その川ならではの案内をガイドさんから聞くことができ楽しめます。

熊野本宮大社を後にした私たちは、次の目的地である熊野那智大社を目指して国道１６８号線を新宮市中心部に向かっていました。この国道は、熊野川沿いを走っていて、途中には、道の駅瀞峡街道熊野川がありました。
道の駅の駐車場横からは、深い山々の間を縫うように流れている熊野川が見えました。舟下りをしている船も見えました。「川の参詣道」である熊野川を舟で下る姿はいいですね。

Great trip down the river to finish at Shingu. Easy to get to by bus, it stops at the landing, and a great ride down the river, especially on a sunny day. Finishes up right next to Kumano Hayatama Trisha Shinto shrine. They give you a map to walk to the station which takes around 20 minutes so lots of time to catch the Nanki Express back to Nagoya

かつては高貴な人しかできなかった舟による熊野参拝ルートを体験できます．16kmと長距離ですが，舟は船外機も使用してぐんぐん進みます．風景を水面から眺めるのはエキゾチックで楽しい体験です．2011年の水害により，以前は上陸できた島を見るだけになっている部分もありますが，自然の猛威はしかたないですね．当方，最後のほうでニホンカモシカとジャンプするボラに出会えて満足です．舟乗り場まではレンタカーで行きましたが，予約時に伝えておけば路線バスの到着も待ってくれるようです．

We did this boat ride on our rest day from hiking The Kumano Kodo. We had a reservation for the 10 AM boat. We took the public bus there and were greeted by staff as we exited the bus. The check in process was efficient and quick. We used the bathrooms as there would be no chance on the two hour duration of the ride. We paid in cash for our tickets. The boat ride itself was very pleasant. Our guide Ann spoke good enough English and gave us many facts about the river and surrounding areas. She offered to take pictures of us multiple times. We did pull over to the river bank about halfway through the ride to stretch our legs. We really enjoyed riding for a portion with the boat captain rowing and our guide playing the traditional flute. The water was incredibly clear and beautiful. It is worth noting that the boat ride is one way. It does not include a return trip. The boat ride ends at the great shrine, but we wish we had more information about how to return by bus. We figured it out eventually, but it was a bit stressful. Make sure you have a plan in place and know the timetables of the bus. I would definitely recommend this experience.

We booked the 10am boatride. When we reached the bus stop, guide Tomoko was there to greet us and another couple. We were escorted to the visitor center (it has moved in 2018, so heads up if you have old brochures). Checked in, issued life jackets and pilgrim conical hats.
There were seven of us on the boat, 9 including Tomoko and the boat captain.
The trip was informative (in both Japanese and English) and we really enjoyed the scenery and history she gave us during the 90 minutes. Listening to her play a flute was quite nice.
They request you don't bring large bags on the trip and keep them safe and dry in the van that meets you at the end. Had I known more, I would have just chucked everything into the van! You don't need anything except your camera/phone, your eyes, a jacket if you're on the morning trip in the springtime, sunglasses, sunscreen, water and maybe a snack.
At the end you get back in the van and are dropped off at the entrance to Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
I really enjoyed this and would do it again.

Hi, I'm hiking the Kumano Kodo in May from Takajiri-oji and have two questions: I would like to take the morning boat ride down to Kumano Hayatama Taisha. I'm not sure where I should stay the night before, nor how to get from there to the departure point. I'm quite confused actually with whole Hongu area, and have no idea where to stay because of above.
I also wonder how I can avoid a 21 km lead-in walk to get to the Hongu area. Can I find accommodation between Tsugizakura and Hongu, break that section into two?

We are thinking of going on the 2:30pm tour in April and would like to know if we will have time to visit the Kumano Hayatama Taisha at the end of the tour as I note it closes at 5pm?

Hi, Who do I contact to make reservations from the United States. And, are single fares available? It seems that everything is for couples or parties of people. And, is it easy to access the boat departure meeting place if traveling by bus? Thank you.

I feel it would be suitable for children but probably not tiny tots. I wouldn't be inclined to take under 6's for example but that's just my opinion.

We will come to Shingu by train for the day. How do we get from Shingu Station to the boat departure please?
