When I visited Tokoji, I felt it was a wonderful place surrounded by history and beautiful nature. The temple's beautiful gardens were well maintained and we could enjoy the seasonal scenery. The tranquility of the temple grounds calmed my mind and refreshed me both physically and mentally. The staff of the temple were also kind and answered questions carefully, and I was able to know deeply about Buddhist culture. In particular, I was impressed by the tea ceremony experience. Overall, it is a great spot to enjoy history and culture.

It is a temple of the Obaku sect where the tomb of the Mōri clan is located along with Daishō-in. The graveyard itself, where the odd-numbered lords of the Mori clan rest, over 500 large stone lanterns may be spectacular and designated as a national historic site, imprudent, but it was a different scene from the famous head family Mansho-in, and I felt it should be visited.

The front of the temple from the gate looks a bit neglected now and obviously hasn't recovered from pre-covid days when tour buses crowded with sightseers would arrive. The lanterns at the back - whichi everyone comes to see don't seem to be neglected though. Unique and beautiful as always.

萩市の郊外にある毛利氏の菩提寺で、毛利家の墓所もある。黄檗宗の寺院なので、中国的な雰囲気もやや感じられるが、敷地が広大な割に堂宇の数はさほど多くない。受付が無人なので、拝観料を自主的に納めるようになっている。

大寧寺を出てからは隣りの萩市にある「東光寺」まで、約40分間の道のりでした。東光寺が近付いた頃、坂道を下っていると、いきなり右側に東光寺の名前を見つけます。急いで駐車場に踏み入れると、かなり狭小な駐車場であった事に驚きます。しかも、これまた小さな門の先は無人で、拝観料をセルフで納めて下さいと書いてありました。一人大人300円を自主納付して、先に進んでみれば、そこには広大な敷地が広がっていて、坂道の遠い場所に２つ山門が存在していたのでした。私達は改めて、遠くに見える山門から再スタートを切る事にしました。最初の山門に辿り着いた私達は、そこを起点として坂道を上がりながら周辺の紅葉の撮影に勤しんだのでした。

山口県萩市にある黄檗宗の寺院で毛利氏の菩提寺でもあります。黄檗宗とは日本の三禅宗の一つで、江戸時代に始まった比較的新しい宗派のことです。
萩藩3代藩主 毛利吉就公が萩出身の名僧慧極を開山として創建した寺院で、入口の総門は朱色の少し異国風(中国風)の変わった門で、中に入ると巨大な山門が見えました。
山門の手前から有料(大人300円、小中学生150円)となっていて、そこから先には行きませんでしたが、かなり大きな寺院のようでした。 さすが毛利氏の菩提寺って感じですね。

I spent a day in Hagi, and Tokoji Temple was high on my list of places to visit. I drove a car here, it is not far from the down town area and there is a parking lot to the side of the temple. I've lived in Japan almost a year now and have explored a lot and Tokoji Temple might be my favorite so far. I like that Hagi is not to touristy, so I had this site practically to myself. The gate was huge and the temple itself was massive, I like the old dry wood, it just looks old and authentic. I agree with most people that the major attraction here are the graves of the Mori Lords. This can be found on the opposite side of the temple near the back. Bring your camera as this grave site is absolutely beautiful and peaceful. I wish I knew more of the history here as it was very interesting. The Tokoji Temple is not to be missed if in the area.
