Bereid je voor op een stevige wandeling als je Pylos castle wil bezoeken.
Op zich een mooi fort, maar helaas worden de mogelijkheden ervan niet benut, wellicht owv. het ontbreken van financiële middelen.
Sommige delen zijn echt slecht onderhouden en de musea stellen niet zo heel veel voor.
Er zijn natuurlijk tal van soortgelijke bezienswaardigheden en musea in de buurt.
Heel wat museumstukken staan dan nog opgestapeld in de vroegere barakken van het fort.
In het wat verderop gelegen Methoni is de situatie net dezelfde: te weinig geld om iets moois te doen met al die ruïnes.
Pylos en Methoni zijn wel mooie stadjes, maar het is eigenlijk te ver rijden van de centraler gelegen bestemmingen als Pyrgos, Olympia en Mystras.

Wow, this castle covers a very large area. There's lots of opportunities where you can clamber up the walls and take in the great views of the surrounding area. The church in the centre is beautiful inside and out. The exhibitions which are on are really interesting. It would improve visits a great deal if there were some information boards up around the site but there's next to nothing. Shame. As usual for castles in Greece I wouldn't recommend taking children. There are no fences anywhere and numerous sheer drops.

Don’t miss this castle, which completes a trio of excellent visits, along with Methoni and Koroni, especially if you like fortifications as much as me. Koroni sits on a perfect vantage point above the Bay of Navarino, so be sure to read up about the crucial naval battle that took place there in 1827. The combined allied fleet, made up of French, Russian, and British vessels inflicted a crushing defeat over the Turkish fleet which lay at anchor inside Navarino Bay.
This event was instrumental in bringing about Greek independence shortly after, so don’t underestimate the importance of this place in Greek history.
Anyway, back to the castle. It dates back to the 16th century, and was built by the Turks, so this sets the castle apart from Methoni and Koroni. You’ll immediately be struck by the scale of the walls and the regular hexagonal shape of the castle – quite a move forwards from medieval castle design. You can access this part of the castle via a ramp, which takes you on to the top of the bastions.
It’s also possible to walk most of the outer walls, but watch your step – there hasn’t been much renovation here, so you need to be sure-footed.
Another highlight is the Church of the Metamorphosis, which you’ll find in the castle grounds. The church was converted from what was originally a Muslim mosque.
Finally, your ticket also allows admission to a recently opened archaeological museum which you will see to your left just after you enter the castle. This contains a small but beautifully presented set of artefacts relating to Prehistoric and Roman times.
Two other tips if you’re in Pylos: make sure you see the monument in the main square to the “Three Admirals”. There is still some controversy in Greece about their role in the liberation of Greece from Turkish rule, considering the absence of any direct Greek contribution to this victory; however, by chance, I did find a short but excellent audio-visual representation of the battle in a small building just to the left round the corner from the main square. I think it was in some kind of reading room. A short flight of stone steps leads up to the door of this building.

Πολύ κοντά στο κέντρο της Πύλου με άνετο χώρο στάθμευσης.
Σωστή ενημέρωση στην είσοδο. Καθαρός χώρος. Εντυπωσιακή η είκόνα του κάστρου και η θέα στη γύρω περιοχή. Να ανεβείτε στην ακρόπολη, να επσικεφθείτε την εκκλησία που βρίσκεται μέσα στα τείχη, το εντυπωσιακό αρχαιολογικό μουσείο και τις 2 συλλογές για τα θαλάσσια ευρήματα. Αν πάτε καλοκαίρι προτιμήστε πρωινές ή απογευματινές ώρες.

Visite très intéressante et site très bien conservé, possibilité de se promener sur une grande partie du site et le musée archéologique recèle de belles pièces trouvées dans la région

Καλά διατηρημένο κάστρο με αξιόλογο και προσεγμένο μουσείο. Σου κάνουν και ξενάγηση. Πολύ ωραία θέα της θάλασσας της Πύλου. Τα 6 ευρώ είσοδος φαίνονται πολλά αν τα συγκρίνεις με τα 3 για την είσοδο στο κάστρο της Μεθώνης, αλλά εδώ έχεις και τα μουσεία

I visited it on Monday (Tuesday it’s closed).
Payed the entrance (6€) en wandered around a bit. I didn’t expect to spend as much time there as I did. It’s very nice to walk around, visit the little museums inside, climb the walls and enjoy the beautiful view.
It’s absolutely worth a visit.

Only €6 to get in - this is worth a trip. Beautiful views, the smell of pine and an impressive, historic castle. The little museums inside are really well presented and interesting.
