A definite must is a tour of thiepval woods I actually saw the area where my great uncle fought and died for our freedom. The curator was very knowledgeable and was able to point out many places of interest . Very emotional experience

We visited here and were extremely grateful for the cafe after a cycle up the hill to see the tower. The host was very knowledgeable about the area and we enjoyed our chat. The tower is a must see on the local tour of battlefields etc and we loved the unique structure.

Visited Ulster Tower and Thiepval Wood last week on our tour of the Somme Battlefields. We had a tour of the wood with guide Nigel Davies which was informative, entertaining and wonderfully presented. Can’t praise it enough. Followed by lovely coffee and cakes in the cafe. Highly recommended to enhance Battlefield trip experience. Book in advance through Ulster Tower

This is a must when visiting the Somme battlefields. Anne was very responsive to our request for a tour and Nigel's tour, including a visit to the Thiepval Wood trenches was both interesting and informative.

Excellent tour of the memorial tower and the trenches in the woods near by. Our guide Nigel was excellent. Highly recommended!

Reproduction d'une tour Irlandaise en hommages aux combattants.
Lieux très propre et très bien entretenu.
À la base de la tour, un mémorial et sur le côté, un petit café et un mini musée gratuit qui regorge de nombreux objets trouvés sur les lieux des champs de batailles.
Très bon accueil.

Officieel ingehuldigd op 19 november 1921 en herdenkt de soldaten van de 36ste Ulster Divisie en degene uit Ulster die in de 1ste wereldoorlog gediend hebben.
De geschiedenis kan men op talloze websites terug vinden, wel een prachtig monument om te bezoeken !

Sadly since Covid you can’t go into the tower, nor go into the grounds or graveyard unless you jump the fence! I expect you could by prior arrangement, but you’d pro ably need a reason. Still lovely to look at.

Quiet place for reflection on the sacrifices made

It is only when you start walking around in the Somme area that you understand the pure futility of the war. There are hundreds of memorials and cemeteries in the area with thousands of names and nothing was gained.
The main road from Grandcourt to Pozieres has numerous memorials, and the area hundreds. All well maintained and you can ponder and remember in quiet solitude. The memorial , as all the others are well maintained and cared for. The fact that local farms around here still find shells as they till the fields was a surprise till you remember the tonnage fired. We were lucky to be able to walk the main road from Grand Court to Pozieres, and it shows the territory, and we saw many of the memorials. Along the road the farmers place shells and part shells in piles to be collected. Ulster Tower stands over the surrounding land and provides views across battle fields. It is just a sad place in a beautiful setting and well cared for. One hint - the various memorials are not always open, but you can walk around most or view them from the road.
