Sibu Central Market was built in 1996 on Channel Road, opposite the Express Boat Passenger Terminal. It is the largest and most vibrant indoor market, not only in Sarawak, but also in Malaysia.
The market is spacious enough to accommodate all kinds of stalls that sell local and imported vegetables, fruits, meat, general merchandise as well as food and drinks.
If Lady Luck is smiling at you, you might chance upon exotic fruits, rare jungle produce and handicrafts sold at the market. Oh ya, you can't simply can't miss the most ubiquitous produce that is live chickens wrapped with newspapers, waiting to be sold.

It has a huge variety vegetables, fruits, meats, seafood etc, the prices are lower than a number of markets away from town.
But you still need to be wary of some sellers that are out to trick you. I came across tis prawns stall, and I wanted half a kg of prawns, prawn seller wife went ...you can only get the back stash lot of prawns 🤭. I asked to view the back stash but she refuses to show me! I have never experienced such a nonsensical person!

The biggest indoor market in Malaysia that was built in 1996, 24 years from now after the nearby river wooden stalls being removed previously.
Situated at Channel Road ie. the main commercial centre for Sibu town. Range of stalls containing vegetable,fruit,meat and sundry merchandises running by local residents throughout generation.

I was travelling through Sibu (on my way from Kuching to Song & onwards to a rural longhouse).
We had a few hours spare so we visited the wet & dry market in Sibu.
It was a 'local' market & not intended for tourists.
I found it very interesting.
The food court was upstairs.

This is a wet and dry market in the city centre. It's a 2 storey building with food court on the upper floor. What is interesting is that you can see pork being sold openly as compared to some markets in KL. Truly Malaysian. Interesting part is you get to see some local veg and fruits that you don't get to see in KL and it's vibrant especially in the morning. There are local Sibu durians as well, and plenty of seafood sold!! Sibu is a small town so visiting the market is interesting stopover.

A quick stopover at the market enroute to the airport was one of the best decisions ever made. Fresh fruits greeted us n resistance was low, so all of us carried a few kilograms of extra luggage. Yup, we came at the right time... the fruit season.

No visit to Sibu is complete without a visit to the central market especially the fruits section with so much variety of exotic fruits. Wish I could try them all!

Pity we came now as part of the market has been relocated due to refurbishment I believe.
First time I visited in 2015 it was to say the least 'amazing'. It gave you an insight into how people shopped and sold their wares. Live chickens wrapped in newspaper and tied with rope. Various animals in cages and black chickens.
I visited around 13.30 so maybe all the poultry had gone but it didn't seem as interesting as it did on my first visit.
Hopefully it will return to its former place of interest when the works are complete.

It’s opened everyday!!! Even on weekdays. On the first floor... you can enjoy all the hawkers food... so many choices to choose from
