The Basilica is by far and away the main sight in Tolentino.
Sadly it was badly affected by the 2016 earthquakes and most of the beautiful 17th century marble facade is hidden by scaffolding.
However the main drawcards are inside.
The Cappellone (big chapel) is the highlight. Here, you will find the sarcophagus (but strangely not the body) of St Nicholas of Tolentino, a charismatic hermit, healer and preacher who died in 1306.
All of the surrounding walls are decorated with a series of famous and unexpectedly vivid 14th century frescoes. There’s not a patch left undecorated.
Painted by Giotto’s followers, the upper scenes depict the life of Jesus. The lower scenes illustrate episodes from the life of St Nicholas. Turn your eyes up to the vault and here you see the 4 Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), the 4 “Doctors of the Church” and scenes from the Virgin Mary’s life.
Scaffolding obviously obstructs some of the view but they are still wonderful.
Curiously, the saint’s body was lost for centuries and was not rediscovered until 1923. Some 40 years after his death, a particularly zealous German pilgrim hacked off the saint's arms as some sort of gruesome relic or keepsake. As he cut, blood started to flow from the wounds and the horrified pilgrim dropped the arms, fled as quickly as he could and probably had nightmares for the rest of his life. The severed, and now abandoned, arms were held by the church and every year for the next few centuries they were carried through the streets in a religious procession.
Hoping to thwart other over-enthusiastic relic hunters, the rest of the St Nicholas’ body was quickly buried in a secret location. Unfortunately those involved took the secret to their graves and over time, there was no-one left who knew where the burial site was. It was not until 1926 that the body was re-discovered. Arms and body were reunited and transferred to a newly created underground crypt.
The basilica is quite large and you can easily spend some time here especially if you linger in the large, open cloisters. We took a leisurely stroll along the covered portico, stopping to look at the frescoed walls. Each of the portico pillars is also different. Some are lobed, others are cylindrical, some have capitals with decorative vegetation and others have human figures. It's a beautiful, peaceful space.

Grazie!
