We enjoyed our visit to the Museum which is well thought out and put together. The experience is a reminder of how awful war is and how it impacts so dreadfully on so many people’s lives. Our visit took an hour and a half and we ended it with a lovely (reasonably priced) Cappuccino in the small cafe.

The museum is really informative and a must to visit before you go and look around the Arnhem battlegrounds. It really helps to graphically set the scene.
It probably takes about an hour and a half. We only had an hour as the museum was closing and it was just about enough time.

There are several places and museums in the area which are connected with the battle of Arnhem (and all of them are worth visiting), however Airborne Museum at Hartenstein is definitely the best place to learn more about the battle.
The museum exhibits numerous memorabilia, photos and finds from the battlefield, and everything is carefully described. To make it even more interesting and genuine, everything is arranged in the hotel, which was the headquarter of British Paratrooper Division, during the battle in September 1944.
Part of the exhibition is permanent, while in the lower part of the museum (basement) there was periodic exhibition related not only to the battle itself, but also to the local population and its fate during and after the battle.
Very interesting indeed, even for those who have read a dozen books about the battle and know (almost) everything about the military aspects of Operation Market-Garden.

Een prachtige villa om te zien en erg mooi ingedeeld. Dan waar het om gaat is minder mooi. Operation Market Garden. Ik ben hier met mijn 9-jarige zoon geweest die graag een oorlogsmuseum wilde bezoeken. Omdat wij hier in de buurt waren, en deze operatie mij aansprak zijn we naar het Airborn museum gegaan. Het was voor ons beide erg indrukwekkend. Het is mooi opgezet en je wordt meegenomen door de tijd. Ook ondergronds waar je zelf de oorlog kunt beleven is erg indrukwekkend. Nu weten we wat er echt gebeurd is rond Arnhem.

Had been here before quite a few years ago, was good to see its update. Easy to find just west of Arnhem, well signef in Oosterbeck. Free parking adjacent. Eur15 entry with audio guide. Well presented from all sides in the conflict and the effect on the local population. A more modern presentation then my previous visit. Just as informative about Op Market Garden, in part, in the new building. This is the ideal starting point if you intend to visit other sites of the battle. A good cafe in the grounds for refreshment at reasonable cost.

This is an excellent museum for those interested in the famous paratrooper battle in World War II. It covers only the airborne part of the battle. There are the usual weapons, uniforms, medals, documents and other artifacts of the battle. Where this museum really shines is the videos that bring the battle to life. It also pays attention to the Dutch citizens who were affected by being in the middle of this battle. The highlight is "The Airborne Experience" which is on the lowest level of the basement. You move through a series of rooms where each room depicts a part of the battle, and you feel like you are in the battle due to the use of dark lighting, videos, life-size recreations of battle scenes, etc. I could go into more detail, but I don't want to spoil your experience. Just trust me: it is one of the best museum experiences I've ever had. There is a gift shop and also a cafe in the building next door.

Is it possible too purchase an airborne flag from the museum aka the small maroon version with Pegasus and bellerphon and the dates 17th to 25th of September 1944.

Is there a car park at the site and if there is then how is it accessed? I will be visiting on my way to the ferry so time will be short therefore a bit of preplanning helps.

There is a small car park which you can access from the main road. There is no charge for parking here. In case this car park is full, you can drive on for about 100 meters, passing the museum on your right hand side until you reach a somewhat larger (also free) car park in the adjacent residential neighbourhood. A walk of about 100 meters will lead you to the entrance.

We are wondering if there is public transportation that we can take between the Arnhem Oosterbeek Commonwealth War Cemetery and the Airborne Museum at Hartenstein. We are coming to the cemetery via train from Amsterdam. thank you.

The Utrechtseweg in Oosterbeek is under construction at the moment, and that is why bus line 1 does not drive the normal route. Is it possible for you to walk? The War Cemetery (Van Limburg Stirumweg) is near the Oosterbeek train station, it's a 5 minutes walk. From there you could walk to the museum in about 20 minutes.

Thanks to birtley21 for pointing out the train and bus to the museum. Besides No. 1 bus you can take No. 52 (direction Wageningen) which stops at the Airborne Museum 'Hartenstein' busstop, directly in front of the museum.
Plan your train trip via ns.nl website. It's only 65 minutes. The bus will take you to the museum in about 15 minutes.
