Private Full Day Tour of Tokyo

Rie was an amazing guide! She was very friendly, spoke great English, and knew so much about all the places she took us. Not only did she teach us about the locations we visited but also about Japanese culture and how to be respectful as a tourist. This was a great thing to do on our first day in Japan! We really enjoyed the whole day and felt like we could navigate the city on our own after Rie’s instruction.

Quality tours, friendly and experienced knowledgable guide

Our third visit to Tokyo over the last 10 years or so and the second time we’ve used Backstreet Guides. This time we took a half-day private tour on our first day to refamiliarise ourselves, a lot has changed since our previous visits so was glad we did this. Then we had a day trip to Kamakura, about an hour by train from Tokyo. Both tours were with our new friend Yuko, she was great! What we love about this group is how easy they are to deal with and how flexible Yuko was during the tours, nothing is too much trouble. Cannot recommended them enough. Already thinking about what we can do next visit, definitely won’t leave it so long this time!

Excellent Tour Company - amazing experience

My family and I visited Tokyo and wanted to do a tour on the first day. I reached out via email and Hiro helped set up the itinerary. She was very helpful in guiding us on what places to visit as well as making suggestions along the way while planning the tour. I cannot thank her enough as she made this trip extremely memorable. I was having trouble booking our train to Kyoto and she offered to book these tickets as well and also made sure we had reserved seats on the train.
We met our guide Rie at the hotel, she was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. She kept us on track and ensured we got the most out of the day. We visited the famous Tsukiji food market and stopped at different stalls to try the local Japanese food - which was delicious. Visited the Senso-ji Temple and walked around the streets near the temple. Hiro had also suggested that we dress up in traditional kimonos and take a rickshaw around Asakusa - this by far exceeded our expectations. My daughter (11 years old) loved every minute of it. We then stopped for lunch and Rie went out of her way to ensure we found a place that we can all eat at as one member has celiac disease. Not only did she find a place for lunch but had gone to the market to look for GF soy sauce and was unable to find it so she ordered a bottle online prior to the tour so she could ensure that our family member could have soy sauce with her sushi. I was amazed by her hospitality - it was above and beyond any tour company we have used previously. We definitely would recommend this company to anyone traveling to Japan. Thank you so much for an unforgettable experience.

Fantastic tour of Tokyo for first time visitors

We took the Group Tokyo Night Tour on our first evening in Tokyo having landed early that day. It was the perfect way to get over our jet lag as it got us out and about walking (we walked a lot (!) which was great). Mayu was a brilliant guide - she is super friendly, very knowledgeable and has excellent English. Our group was only ourselves and one other couple - I imagine with a bigger group it might feel a bit chaotic. Maya took us to all the “classic” Tokyo sights in Harajuku, Shinjuku and Shibuya. The only thing I would maybe have changed was that where the tour finished in Roppongi didn’t seem particularly interesting. Though that may have been because by that time we were tired.
The next day we took a private morning tour with Mayu where we visited sights on the eastern side of the city, imperial palace, tsukiji market etc. Again Mayu was brilliant - we especially enjoyed seeing the market with her as if we’d gone by ourselves we probably wouldn’t have tasted as many foods or even understood what they were! All in all the two tours really set us up for the rest of our time exploring Tokyo on our own, and I think they were great value.

Excellent introduction to Tokyo nightlife

Our guide Mayu-san met my two young adult sons and I at our Shinjuku hotel in the evening. Although I had been to Shinjuku, my sons had not and I thought they'd be interested in a night-time tour of this area. We had a brief discussion as to the plan of the evening; Mayu-san took account of what we had done on our first day around Shinjuku and adjusted her itinerary for us accordingly. We started with a very short (and crowded!) train trip to Harajuku from where we walked to Shibuya and back to Shinjuku investigating all the things these areas have to offer. Mayu-san made us walk a lot and was very very informative. We stopped in Shibuya for dinner at an izakaya. I can attest my sons and I highly enjoyed their 5 hour guided tour with Mayu-san. We were very happy customers! I would certainly used Backstreet Guides again for another party of Tokyo or Japan (if they had any going). It's really a marvellous way to see the sights with a knowledgeable and friendly local.

Amazing guide - Mayu

11 family members ageing from 11 to 72 went to Hakone and Mt Fuji with guide Mayu. She was an extremely caring, organised, flexible and informative guide. Highly recommend Backstreet Guides to take you in and around Tokyo. Very very easy to deal with prior to the tour as well.

Day in Nikko with Mayu- so much fun and seamless travel and sightseeing

I had the best day. visiting Nikko dressed in its Autumn foliage- Mayu from Backstreet Guides was so organised and thankfully her English was impeccable (as my Japanese was very, very limited). Mayu picked me up from my hotel and we headed via metro to the Nikko train- Mayu explained what we were doing on the day and after some obligatory photos at the train station (as the leaves of the trees were superb), we were introduced to our wonderful driver who drove us all over Nikko- showing us the best leaves and going to the magnificent Nikko Shrines and Temples as well as the countryside and the sublime views and vistas of this area. This tour was more than I had hoped for and Mayu provided information about the places we visited and the best things we should note- it was a wonderful, calm way to see this amazing area and exceeded all of my expectations!! Thank you for such a brilliant day in Nikko- I shall always remember the fun time we had.

Spent 3 days with our guide.

I had a private tour scheduled when we arrived. We met our guide Mayu. She was So sweet and friendly that half way through the tour i booked her for the next day and the evening two days later.
She was very informed and taught us many things about Japan, the culture, religion. My whole group just loved her and the tour and the time she spent to teach us and inform us. IT is alot of walking but it was so worth it. We were able to go to shrines, towers, temples, gardens. She covered it all. I would highly recommend this company and her as a guide. Be prepared to walk, the booking process was excellent and the communication was super throughout the whole time.
