Had wanted to visit the cave since before Lockdown and have been really pleased to finally have the chance. Royston Cave's website and Twitter account have been really friendly and interesting over all that time and their virtual tour really helped getting to see the cave when we couldn't see the cave !
Today didn't disappoint at all - and there really is nothing like being in the space in real life. It really is unique.
Nicky is a superb host and guide. He looks after visitors really well, his knowledge has depth and breadth and he communicates really clearly. The time just flew by.
I don't think one visit will be enough ... !

Very interesting experience with an excellent guide . Highly recommend if visiting Royston . Only small and you must book in advance , definatly not for anyone with mobility issues . Could do with being open more days.

Small but fascinating cave cut into the chalk beneath Royston high street that was rediscovered in the 1700s. Its origins and use are shrouded in mystery but it appears to have been used by the Knights Templar. The walls have numerous interesting carvings, brought to life up the engaging tour guide we had. Well worth a visit of you're in the vicinity.

Really enjoyed it. Path down after the stairs is steep so be aware of that if you have mobility issues. Has a handrail on both sides. Very interesting. The guide was very friendly and well informed. She explained about the carvings which related to Christianity, Templars, Freeasons, and Paganism. The Cave shop nearby has a book on the cave and other historically relevant things as well as an impressive array of Tarot cards.

A nice little cave located in the middle of Royston Town. Mush of the reason for its existence and information about it is not known but it is a hidden gem. It ia a little bit smaller than I thought and there is a steep staircase kleading up to the cave and there is not too much space down there but it is a must see! Tickets can only be booked online and sale of tickets is usually closed a day before. Tickets cost just £7 for an adult.

I lived in Royston for many years and never got round to visiting this place. HOW EMBARASSING! It's located in the centre of Royston by the T Junction and close to the Roysia Stone and the High Street.
Note to enter the cave there is a steep staircase and it is a bit narrow so bear this in mind if you struggle with these.
When I visited you had to book a ticket in advance via the internet and I can understand why as there is limited space once you get down below.
Our guide had lots of information about the cave and it was very interesting and informative. There seems to be a story behind all the carvings. What was even more mindblowing was that all this was below a busy road.
Highly Recommended!

We were lucky enough to book a private tour (a birthday treat!). Our guide Nick could not have been friendlier or more knowledgeable and answered all our questions.
The cave is small but mighty. Covered in fascinating old carvings, mostly biblical, it felt like stepping into another world, yet knowing the busy street was just above us anchored it into today's world. The fact that no one really knows who created the cave, and for what purpose, adds to the mysticism of the place.
Our tour took an hour, so isn't a whole day out, but packed a big punch - we shall think about it for a long time to come. Such a treat to have something so magical available to us.
Thoroughly enjoyed it and would strongly recommend to anyone with an interest in art and history

Royston cave is a little gem hidden under the pavement in the main thoroughfare through the town centre. Little is known about the history of this little chamber before it was re-discovered by chance.
On the day that I visited, the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the carvings on the walls of the cave and how these reflect medieval history. He is also knowledgeable about the history of Royston itself and what is known about the cave.
This attraction is a nice way to spend half an hour. I found a town centre car park that is free to park on Sundays.
Royston cave is possibly not for very young children but it would appeal to older children.

I have been here twice and most people I know say they always mean to go but never get around to it. It is fascinating inside. Though not big ( high, not wide), it has a informative 'guide' to explain what all the markings are as far as is known and it is just something that I feel everyone should go to at least once as it is so historic....and right under your feet when walking on the opposite side of the road to Lloyds bank ! You would never imagine what was down there !
