This hauntingly beautiful but wild village is a must visit in the Far North of Scotland. People were moved to Badbea when a local landowner wanted to improve the income from one of his estates by introducing lucrative sheep farming. The solution was to evict the farming families and move them to Badbea, on the high cliffs south of Berriedale. Twelve families were evicted, moving some eighty people to the clifftop village, a place so inhospitable that the residents had to tether their animals and even small children to avoid them being swept over the cliffs by high winds. The path to the village is a bit boggy and the site could do with better interpretation but all visitors to the North of Scotland should visit at least one site associated with the Highland Clearances.

Like many villages along this part of the coast Badbea grew as a result of the highland clearances circa 1841. Local landowners deciding that raising sheep in the glans was more profitable than collecting tenants rents hence the highland clearance of people and influx of sheep.

Badbea is a remote and isolated, inhospitable site. No one has lived here since 1901 but the winds which whip around your ears as you approach the site from the A9 car park evoke the tormented cries of those long gone.

Dropping down from the ridge and moving down the cliff side the winds drop and the silence is all powerful. A monument erected by the son of one the families who emigrated to New Zealand is a memorial to those who lived at Badbea.

The ruins of the homes are clear to be seen, despite being overgrown.

The views from the site today are stunning in the sunshine. With the memories of those who must have suffered such great hardship to eek out a living here, tethering not just cattle against losing them over the cliff edge to the winds but their children too I don’t suppose the beauty of the landscape was any compensation for the loss of their way of life.

Badbea has a great and poignant story to tell of a disgraceful time in Scotland’s history and it is certainly worth a visit. There are a few good information boards but no map or signposting of the site itself. If you just go to the monument and the ruin next to it, you miss the main ruins which are north of the monument (about 400m) and out of site of it. Better signposting of the site is urgently required. The cliff top views are spectacular and you really get a sense of how bleak the existence must have been for those cleared from the fertile glens.
