My wife and I are in our mid-fifties. We did a four day tour and loved every moment. The bikes were modern and worked perfectly. The maps and trip notes were great and made navigating easy and our bag transfers were seamless. We rode through beautiful countryside and stopped in some of the most delightful towns and villages. Robert could not have been more helpful and supportive and his accommodation recommendations were excellent as well. We could not recommend this tour any more highly. An experience of a lifetime.

The highlight of my visit to the Dordogne was the bike-riding on the back roads. Gentle hills, amazing scenery, I rented an excellent La Pierre road bike from Aquitaine Bikes. The proprietor, Robert Owensmith was helpful, supportive, and full of information about the region. He advised me on routes to ride, and gave me lots of little tips (like where to find water in every town.... a great story). He showed me maps, but also encouraged me to bring my GPS, and explore on my own. I did this, and was duly rewarded.

The entire experience of being in the Dordogne region is wonderful. It is visually beautiful, the people are wonderfully friendly, and the food is beyond delicious. The Dordogne River is central to the experience. It is clean, clear and cool. I swam in the river every day, and took several canoe trips down the river, looking at the impressive castles looming over the river, which were central to the Hundred Years War. There are small villages and Bastides to visit, many with their own market days. The prehistoric caves stimulate your imagination to life 17,000 years ago.

Take the time, and make this trip.

What a great cycle tour of the Dordogne ! We chose our own accommodations and Robert provided a detailed route map including loop rides when we stayed for a few nights in one location. The rides were tailored to our preferences, both sightseeing and cycling intensity .

Robert is extremely enthusiastic and knowledgeable about the area and its history. He was available by phone over the duration if needed. All of this included in a very reasonable bike rental charge.

The touring bikes are high quality and performed perfectly. Fully equipped with all necessary repair tools and supplies.

This is excellent value for a cycle tour of The Dordogne. Highly recommended !!

Thanks to Aquitaine Bike I enjoyed a wonderful week exploring the Dordogne area.Robert delivered a very good bicycle, along with panniers, tool kit and a lock, to the lovely hotel Aquitaine Bike had recommended. He also provided me with a clear map with routes and advice tailored for my aims and cycling capacity. I was given contact information for help if needed but nothing went wrong and thanks to Aquitaine Bike I enjoyed a wonderful cycling holiday in the picturesque Dordogne region.

Rented a bike from Robert in May of 2022. He is the gold standard for bike rentals!. He set me up with just what I was looking for. A trekking bike good for some 40-50k day trips. It was a high quality bike with quality accessories. I felt confident that the bike would not breakdown in the middle of nowhere and spoil a good day. Robert has a great knowledge of his area and his recommendations were spot on. In fact, because of Robert I will be headed back to to follow up on more of his recommended towns to visit and rides to go on.

I highly recommend booking with Aquitaine Bikes for a no frills, simple, straightforward, self-guided itinerary through Périgord. Robert has been doing this for 35+yrs and has vast knowledge of the region. Other companies will charge you more than double for the bells & whistles. If you are here to connect with nature and history, this choice is for you. I couldn’t be more pleased of Robert’s hospitality. Throughly enjoyed my biking tour! Keep the wheels turning!

We highly recommend Aquitaine Bikes for a truly memorable, well-organized cycling travel experience. We did the Classic Tour (normally 7 days) in 8 days during the last week of September. Weather was still relatively warm, but the mornings were cool. Aquitaine Bike’s owner Robert is British but has lived in France for 30+ years and knows the area like the back of his hand and is extremely knowledgeable about the area’s rich prehistoric and medieval history. The entire experience was fabulous and surpassed our expectations! Routes passed by or through small timeless villages that one probably would not see or explore if travelling by car. We seldom needed to go on roads with much traffic and then only for very short distances before turning off again onto tranquil rural roads that were a delight to cycle on.

BICYCLES

We rented Trek bikes with hybrid wheels, which was an excellent choice for the roads. These are similar to our Specialized brand hybrids at home. We are middle-aged (50s and 60s) amateur cyclists used to 40-50 km rides, so this fit the bill perfectly.

The bikes were excellent quality and in perfect condition. Robert provided front handlebar pouches (maps/route maps were velcro’d onto the tops) – also useful for phones and small items. He also provides water bottles, locks, a tube, a pump and a bike tool for each bike (which fit into the handlebar pouch perfectly).

We used the provided locks but thankfully never encountered a puncture. We never felt unsafe in any of the areas we visited. (It’s important to note that Robert is available by phone should there have been any problem.) We saw nowhere to purchase bicycle attire, parts, etc. so bring items you need and like. An American couple we befriended who cycle frequently brought their own pedals and seats, which Robert affixed to their rentals. He is very accommodating and knowledgeable about a variety of bicycle models.

Bikes do not come equipped with reflectors, headlights or kickstands. However, it is unsafe to ride in the evenings as the roads are unlit in addition to some hairpin turns and steep inclines and declines. As a result, it’s essential to plan the day’s ride during daylight hours only. Additionally, the French often drive very fast along the twisting roads. Most are courteous and remain behind cyclists until they can see ahead to safely pass.

I squeezed a frameless, small, lightweight backpack into the pouch Robert supplied for behind the seat. We also liked to carry extra water bottles (Robert provides a complimentary water bottle for each bike). I recommend bringing a couple of bungy cords to add to the couple Robert provided. Typically, we started the morning with layers and would then remove them as the day progressed and temperature rose. I kept my layers in place with bungy cords attached atop the pouch on the rear wheel.

ROUTES

Robert’s route maps are terrific, and his instructions are essential for certain rides. We carried our phones with us but found Robert’s notes more valuable than Google or Apple maps. He has put a lot of time into creating interesting routes on tranquil rural roads that wind throughout the lovely countryside. We started and ended our 8 cycling days in the pretty little town of Les Eyzies. The region is beautiful, but it is not flat. Medieval castles and their corresponding villages were typically established on hilltops, so be prepared for some hills each day. Highlights of the trip were Lemieul, Cadouin, Belves, Beynac, Montpazier, Marqueyssac and Roque Gageac – but we saw so many lovely places there are too many to list. Some days it was like experiencing one picture postcard after another.

Arrow-shaped signs are everywhere so riders must pay attention to Robert’s notes and accompanying map. The Périgord is rich in prehistoric and medieval history. Robert is a goldmine of information. His loop rides are well-planned and have been refined over the years. They all include interesting, scenic places to stop, sightsee and eat. Be aware that shops and services are typically closed midday and meals in restaurants are served only during set times, so plan your day accordingly.

Be prepared for some climbs and descents! However, this is also where Robert’s knowledge of the area is so key because his routes often avoid the largest hills. Routes use C and D (county) paved roads – typically quite narrow with no shoulder. There are some switchbacks and hairpin turns. People drive remarkably fast as the roads are not very busy. However, most people tend to be accommodating regarding cyclists, and lag behind until they can see ahead to pass. We enjoyed the routes immensely and it was a wonderful surprise to enter a new village or castle after coming around a final turn.

ACCOMMODATION

We typically enjoyed a nice breakfast, went over our route, left at 10AM and returned to our accommodations at 5PM to shower and unwind with a stroll and drink in the villages where we stayed (restaurants are closed until 7:30PM).

We started and ended our trip in Les Eyzies, where we arrived and left by bus. There is a train as well (check trainline.com for times). We stayed at the wonderful La Ferme de Tayac and highly recommend it to all travelers – cyclists or otherwise (read separate review). Eleonore and Cédric put considerable care and attention into so many details to make guests feel comfortable and welcome. Elenore met us at the station which is only about 400 or 500 metres from the station and brought our suitcases to the property. She also kindly brought us back to the station the day we departed and stayed with us until our bus arrived.

Our planned route took us next to pretty Cadouin, where we stayed at the charming Villa Marguerite. We had a fabulous stay there and would stay again in heartbeat! Florence and Caroline were amazing hostesses (read separate review). Cadouin is home to a 12th century abbey and there is a terrific square located a mere 200 metres from Villa Marguerite where we sat to unwind, enjoy one of the local wines and kill time until enjoying Florence’s beautiful dinners at 7:30PM.

Our route took us to St. Cybranet for our next stay at La Belle Demeure. St. Cybranet is more of a crossroads than an actual village. There is only one restaurant and a post box. The nearest village is 5+ km away from any direction, and the nearest route requires a 1.6 km twisting incline to Cénac. La Belle Demeure is popular with British tourists travelling by car. Richard and Phillip are very accommodating hosts. However, as cyclists, we found the lack of an actual village a big drawback. At the end of a day of riding and hiking through several medieval villages, upon returning to shower, there was nothing to do or see, and nowhere to go that didn’t require donning cycling gear to travel some distance in the dark (which is truly unsafe).

Beverages, coffee, tea, wine, beer and spirits were for sale at La Belle Demeure. This was also the only place we stayed that did not permit outside food or beverages consumed on the premises. Rooms are well-appointed and comfortable, and everything is very clean and neat. The setting is very nice with south-facing patio areas and a beautiful vine laden pergola situated above a small swimming pool framed by pretty flowering plants. Unfortunately, it was too cool to eat our evening meals outside or swim in the unheated pool.

Richard is a good cook, and we ate two meals while there. Richard and Philip dined together with their guests. Meals were €30/person and included an entrée, a main course casserole dish, and a homemade dessert. A small continental breakfast consisted of coffee or tea, a small glass of juice, toasted French bread, homemade jam and homemade yogurt.

LAUNDRY

Laundry is a tricky subject but is necessary for practical purposes for cyclists when riding on consecutive days. La Ferme de Tayac offers a service for €10 a load. Most places in Europe prefer to line dry (i.e. no heated dryers), so allowing sufficient time to dry clothing must be taken into consideration. Villa Marguerite kindly washed a load of clothing for us, and we did another at La Belle Demeure (I think it was €8 -€10 for the wash and line-dry). It is advisable to plan ahead and ask in advance about laundry options.

My husband and I can't say enough about the great service we received from Acquitaine and Robert. The bikes we rented were in superb condition and as advertised, high performing bikes. Robert met us at our hotel with several sizes to choose from to make sure the fit was perfect. As we did not sign up for a pre-designed tour, we had asked Robert to recommend several rides in the area we could do and had told him ahead of time the length and level of difficulty we were aiming for. He came with maps, lots of options for routes, and wonderful knowledge of the history of the region and place of interest, etc. He wasn't just someone who rented us bikes, he was travel planner extraordinaire and a lovely person to do business with. Our time in the region was all we had hoped for and more due to Robert's bikes, advice, touring suggestions and knowledge of the area. We recommend him highly without any qualifications and would (and will!) use his services again whenever we bike in any areas where Acquitaine operates.

I recently visited the Dordogne and arranged a 10 day bike rental from Robert. He brought my LaPierre Audacio 500 to the guest house where I was staying. He included a helmet and a water bottle, as well as a standup pump and a portable pump for the bike. He spent a lot of time with me, going over the bike, and a detailed map of rides in the region. He outlined at least 4 different routes and recommended that I explore a bit on my own. (I recommend having a GPS like AppleMaps or GoogleMaps, too.) Rides varied from 25 to 40 miles, with elevation gains from 1200 ft to 2800 ft. Most of the routes were on very quiet roads or dedicated bike trails. There is an old train route beginning just outside of Sarlat that is very gently and there are no cars.
I highly recommend Robert and Aquitaine Bikes. I plan to return next year.
