We went on the early morning waka trip with a group of older aged women. The 2 organisers were women as well which made the whole experience really special. The whole experience was well adapted to our group and they gave us a gentle & genuine feeling of being welcomed and appreciated in their circle . This experience was more than paddling in a waka….you have to find out yourself by doing it. It’s a must do for everyone who’s open for a cultural, spiritual and a wonderful experience.

Highly recommend this to EVERYONE.
Everything was really well organised, safe and positive.
We were gently, generously and kindly enveloped in Māori kaupapa and tikanga.

Paddling as part of a group was a great experience and good fun. The staff were a close knit team and worked together to make it a wonderful new experience . It was a genuinely Maori activity and we learned quite a lot.

We were part of a group of friends celebrating a very special birthday by having Waka Abel Tasman take us out in their wakas. Our taikiati Lee-Anne and Thomas were absolutely fabulous. They made us all fee very welcome , in a way only tangata whenua can. We've been living in the area for a number of years and we have paddled here many time with our sea kayaks, but the experience in the waka was different. Our taikiaki shared their local knowledge and gave us a cultural insight we thoroughly enjoyed listening to, and it did not matter that it was raining almost all the way. At the end of the trip we almost felt we had become part of their whanau. Thank you team for a wonderful experience. Ngā mihi nui!

I was so happy to be out on the beach and bay with Waka Abel Tasman. It was a beautiful day with calm seas for our Waka experience and Lee-Anne was fabulous as our guide and teacher, and very grateful for her sharing and teaching of culture with us that day.

We loved learning the haka on the water.
We are a competitive class and loved racing against each other!
It was fabulous learning about all the Māori history of the area and taking part in Māori kawa (the pukana was mean!)

Our group of 18 from a local tramping club had a great experience paddling to Toka Ngawha and learning about Maori culture on the way thanks to our guides Jacinda and Thomas. A fun day out - we highly recommend.

Thought it would be touristy but this was the real thing with Thomas explaining his Māori culture & relevance & meaning of what we were doing. He also made it fun with his great sense of humor. Highly recommend!

Hello we are in our sixties will we be able to do this? How strenuous is it on a scale of 1 - 10?

You can definitely do this! It's not strenuous at all--it's more of a cultural experience on water than a paddling trip. I also have back/leg problems (sciatica) and found the waka much easier and more comfortable to paddle than a kayak.

Hi. I'm a teacher at St Paul's in Richmond and we have just successfully hosted a group of Chinese students for 12 days. As it is the middle of winter, it was too cold to venture into the park this time but the next group of 20 will be coming in November and the Waka experience sounds wonderful as they did enjoy interactive experiences. These students will be aged from 10-12 years and at this stage I wonder if you think this would be suitable for them with no previous experience. The proposed dates at this stage are from 11 - 22 November which will include China Week from 13-16th. I look forward to your thoughts.

Hi I am coming to Kaiteriteri on the 15th of August and staying for 3 days. I am travelling with my 18yr old daughter. What would you recommend for us to see and do? I liked the idea of the waka Abel Tasman, but is that leaving Nelson? Would like to fit in Kayaking, and seeing by what ever method Abel Tasman Nat Park. Much appreciated Sarah

HI Sarah,
Can thoroughly recommended the Waka as it it is a unique way of seeing parts of and understanding the history of the Abel Tasman. You will have to leave Nelson as the AT and all its activities is about a one hour drive up the coast
