Great Dixter was the home of the late, great gardener Christopher Lloyd and it is so good to see that his spirit lives on in the gardens and his vision is continued in the naturalistic planting.
Even now, when many of the Spring bulbs are in their final stages and the Summer perennials are only just beginning to make an appearance, the garden is a riot of colour and full of interest. I found so much to inspire me and only wish I had more space myself to recreate some of the ideas.
I loved everything about the gardens,it was a pleasure to wander around in this tranquil, yet visually stunning, environment and I'm looking forward to returning to see the gardens in the Autumn.
The house tour was very interesting too and gave further insight into the life of Christopher Lloyd and his family background.
The outdoor cafe is a delightful place to sit on a warm day, but I imagine wouldn't be as pleasant in colder weather! There is quite a limited selection of food; our chard & ricotta filo tart was delicious but we thought the portions on the small side. The coffee was excellent and later we returned for another cup of coffee and some really tasty carrot cake.

The initial minor hindrance was the parking which is limited and we found tricky in a larger vehicle.
Admission prices include standard rate or the more expensive gift aid rate. It is not a cheap visit but probably on par with the National Trust.
The gardens were lovely to look at and the house was interesting even if one of the guides did go on a bit.
The nursery was a little expensive. There is a cafe but the seating is outside and the day we went was bitter.

This was the best visit in a four day trip to East Sussex, which included several sites. We turned up too early at first (should have checked the website for opening times) and returned later in the day.
It's all well laid out with a number of different areas. Early April was a bit early for some but overall there is a very 'natural' feel to the place and we particularly liked the range of hardy plants for sale in the nursery area. Our host there was very knowledgeable and helpful and confirmed our suspicion that they have a link with Beth Chatto's garden in Essex which we know well.
Not at all crowded but it is clear this is a place visitors come to because they have heard of its reputation. We're happy to add to that !

The gardens are just fabulous and faultless. Lucklily the whole place is a working garden and no sign of a corporate make over. We just visited the Christmas Fair and the whole place is let down by the arrogant, bad tempered and incredibly rude staff.

What an amazing garden and so many bees and beautiful planting. We loved the fact there were so many plants all mixed together giving an amazing natural display with such a variety of colour. Lots of pathways to explore leading to all parts of the garden and allowing you to get up close and walk amongst the planting. Such a natural environment and different to the regimented planting at other gardens. A real gem of a place and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.

This is not a garden for those who enjoy the somewhat static planting at National Trust properties, this is a garden for gardeners and lovers of alternative planting.
To some it may look overgrown and chaotic, however to me it’s as close as you can get to a natural but cultivated garden. Stunning and should be visited throughout the season to be fully appreciated.
The cafe is superb, the food local and a delight even if a bit crowded at times.
We gather that a new chef started this year and the selection is amazing, the best sausage rolls I’ve ever had.
The only disappointment is the attitude of the woman who works the little shop, we visit about four times per year and have never had a greeting or acknowledgement of any sort, is typically head down engrossed in playing on her phone and even when we go to pay she is curt and uncooperative. Attitude training or a major change needed there.
However the next stop is the nursery and the staff there couldn’t be better, willing to advise and full of knowledge. As is everyone else on the estate from the ticket staff to the guides in the house, we feel that with the one exception, all of the staff work here because they have a dedication to the place and not purely for a salary.
It’s a pleasure that we always look forward to and have been visiting for many years.

What a fantastic experience.
Fergal and his team have built on what Christopher Lloyd developed which is really wonderful. We've not visited in September before, only in the spring and summer.. It proved a superb decision, to the extent we visited twice. The tropical garden alone was amazing, which we enjoyed battling through. The shear blend of colours amidst the planting themes was quite educational.
The nursery alone is excellent and all priced reasonably, unlike RHS garden nurseries, and a fun tea stop. A really great day out.
We did.t visit the house which we have seen previously

This is the most wonderful and inspirational garden in the most beautiful setting provided by the landscape and the buildings.
The approach to planting combinations as well as bio-diversity has lessons for all of us no matter how big or small a space we have. There is something for everyone to take away. The nursery has a huge range of plants that are hardy and garden ready. Staff provide expert advice so that you can choose the right plants to take home to create your own beautiful space.

What a let down! The gardens were all overgrown and so disappointing, particularly as this visit was to have been the highlight of our tour. A lot of time and money needs to be spent on them to bring them back to their former glory.
The house was a delight to visit, but hard to hear the initial lady guide, who did go on a bit.
We were members of a coach tour and many people felt the same as us. Maybe things will be better in the future but certainly not worth visiting this year.

This is a long way to travel from Leeds. Accepting that TV coverage extracts the best bit, I wonder whether this is worth the 500+ mole round trip unless in the area for a short break?

It is a special place but it isn't the only place worth visiting in Sussex. When I return to this area I will certainly stay somewhere locally and make the visit worthwhile. Do heed the comments made by others - it can be very busy so choose your time to visit with care.

Yes, Rye is a little distance away but would be an exceptionally pretty and historic choice. I have not stayed there but the food and ambience at The Bear Hotel are excellent.

We went with friends who live fairly near Rye and have a dog. They left her at home and we didn't see any dogs while we were there...so I think it's very unlikely.
