It's about a 15-minute walk from Hiraizumi Station.
Admission is free. Photography is not permitted inside the exhibition room. There are also exhibits of pottery excavated from ruins in the town, but the main focus is on explanatory panels about the history of Hiraizumi, focusing on the Oshu Fujiwara clan. It's located between Motsu-ji Temple and Chuson-ji Temple, so it's a good place to stop by if you're walking between the two.

This is a facility where you can learn about Hiraizumi's culture and history for free. We used it as a parking lot for Mt. Kinkei, but it was good to stop by as a review after visiting Chusonji Temple and Motsuji Temple. The people at the center were very kind and introduced us not only to the Chusonji area, but also to the Genbikei and Geibikei areas.
This is a town-run facility. Near the roadside station is the prefectural World Heritage Center. I haven't been to the World Heritage Center, so I don't know the difference, but do we really need two similar facilities? Is this just a box-like administration?

I happened to see it on my way from Chusonji to Motsuji, so I went in.
Since it's a free facility, I didn't have high expectations.
Surprisingly, there was a lot of information about the history of Hiraizumi and the surrounding historical sites other than Chusonji and Motsuji, so I thought it was a good facility to learn about Hiraizumi.
It's a good facility to stop by first and then tour Chusonji and Motsuji.
You will gain more knowledge and be able to see the details.
When I went to Motsuji, I changed the parts I visited.
The only disappointing thing is that the parking lot is so large and empty that it looks like it's not open.
It's completely off the beaten path, so I don't think you'll stop by unless you make a point of going there.
Even if you rent a bicycle from Hiraizumi Station, it's at the top of a hill, so it's likely to be unpopular.

In early December 2023, I revisited Hiraizumi for the first time in over 40 years. One focus of my visit on this occasion was to reinforce my understanding of paradise gardens. As usual, I started my visit with a visit to local museums to gain some insight on the property I was going to reexplore. Hiraizumi Culture and History Museum was the first museum I visited. This turned out to be a very informative visit to refresh my understanding of Hiraizumi’s heritage. Although perhaps a bit hard to follow for non-Japanese visitors, the museum provides much information on the Fujiwara Family that governed the entire Tohoku area for about 100 years. The Fujiwara Family were purported to be descendants of a prominent court figure in the 7th century, Kamatari Fujiwara. In the 12th century, several generations after Kamatari, the Fujiwara Family in the Tohoku region were the samurai governing the region from roughly Fukushima Prefecture in the south to Aomori Prefecture in the north. Their reign started from Kiyohira Fujiwara and lasted for four generations until the late 12th century, when they were defeated by Yoritomo Minamoto, who became the first shogun and established his military government in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. What visitors should keep in mind when visiting Hiraizumi are that (i) the Fujiwara Family were one of the prominent samurai groups that were active during the fight among samurai clans to become the champion of the samurai warriors (ii) it was the Genji clan that won the battle with the Heiji clan to ultimately become the first samurai to be designated as Seii-taishougun (meaning “Shogun in charge of the East”) empowered by the Emperor to govern Japan, (iii) the four generations were Kiyohira, Motohira, Hidehira and Yasuhira, and (iv) that the dream of the Fujiwara Family was to create a Buddhism paradise in Hiraizumi, supported by the gold mined from the region. Visitors should be able to gain much information of Hiraizumi’s heritage by visiting this museum beforehand.

平泉の歴史を包括的に学べるとても良く整備された歴史館。受付の方もとても丁寧で良い印象。駐車場も広く便利です。

平泉の駅から、毛越寺経由で中尊寺に行く途中にあります。
地元の公民館のような建物と併設しており、横のグラウンドでは地元の方がくつろいでいたりしてまったりした場所です。
入場料無料なのですが、展示はしっかりしており、いろいろと平泉のことを知ることができました。
平泉に行った際はここによって勉強するといいと思います。

平泉全体の歴史や、それぞれの場所にどういうものがあり、それが何のためにあったのか、を知ることができます。しかも無料で。
まず全体を知り、そして毛越寺や中尊寺に行くと良さそうなのですが、なぜか立地はこの2つのちょうど間。駅からも遠い。
もっと駅の近くに建てて、まずここに訪れて貰う導線のほうがいいのでは、と思ってしまいました。

ここに平泉の歴史あり！入場料無料という判断をした平泉町に感謝ですね。
平泉に訪れたら、ぜひ訪れてみてください。入場料無料なのに、充実した平泉に関する歴史がわかりやすく展示されてありますよ。お勧めの「平泉文化遺産センター」でした。

入場無料の割には充実。展示室内撮影禁止。トイレ利用の際、栁之御所遺跡出土の籌木（くそべら）のマークに注目。コロナ禍の折に訪問。奥州藤原氏が京から逃れてきた源義経を討った直後に源頼朝に滅ぼされたという現知事のコメントがリアル。徳島や岡山など西日本の自治体においても、自粛警察や他県ナンバー狩りは断固として許さない！という力強いメッセージが必要です。

建物も新しく展示内容もレベル高い。無料だが寄付したくなる。寄付すると絵葉書もらえます。るんるんバスの停留所あり。ミニ図書館あり（歴史マンガ、新聞も）
