Even though it is not our usual practice to write reviews, our extremely unpleasant encounter compelled me to write the most extensive review I have ever written.
We had a bad experience on the 31st of January with Evergreen (Full Day Private Snowshoe Tour). The guide (a Japanese guy whose name we cannot recall the exact spelling) was unprofessional, seemed unprepared, and lacked the necessary expertise to provide an informative and engaging tour. He also rushed through the time and tried to end early.
Firstly, the tour started behind schedule because he was late.
He drove us to a field where we completed a short snowshoe trail that lasted around half an hour. Following that, the guide suggested two choices for us to consider: either explore the valley or ascend the mountain via gondola before embarking on the snowshoe excursion. We chose the latter, and he took us to Happoone. But we had to detour back to his home first because he did not bring his snow pass.
That took up some time, which we were initially okay with. However, upon reaching Happoone, we were then informed by the staff that snowshoes were not allowed. Hence, we had to travel to Iwatake instead.
After all the delay, we reached Iwatake only at around 1130am. Taking the gondola at Iwatake, we only walked briefly before reaching Mountain Harbour Café. Then, he asked us to remove our snowshoes, and we proceeded inside the cafe to check out the view. Since we were at the cafe, we suggested stopping for a coffee before proceeding.
After the coffee, he took us straight to the gondola without telling us what was happening, and we proceeded downhill. We thought he was going to bring us to another spot. But, instead, he said to us that we would go for a nice lunch now and then proceed back to the hotel!
We then realised that we paid for the gondola ride to go up Iwante for less than 10mins of snowshoeing and 30mins coffee break!
We were confused. He had caused numerous delays. Firstly he was late. Then he had to detour home to collect his snow pass. Then he took us to an area where snowshoeing was prohibited. So, after all the delays, we had only accomplished less than 1 hour of snowshoeing. But this was supposed to be a 6hrs tour with lunch included. However, now at 1245pm, he wants to go for lunch at a restaurant and end the tour prematurely instead.
When he initially asked us if we wanted to go somewhere else for lunch instead of having the picnic, we had assumed that at least after a quick lunch, we would continue the snowshoe tour. We were shocked and repeatedly asked him, only to receive confirmation that we would head for lunch, and then he would send us back to our hotel, ending the tour.
Therefore, we rejected him and said we should proceed with the picnic lunch instead. We don't mind just having a light meal and continuing the snowshoe tour.
At this point – he got upset that we were not going for the "nice lunch" and even claimed we kept changing our plans. He demands that we are tired and should not continue with the tour! Finally, when he knew we were not budging, he grudgingly agreed to continue the trek.
BUT GUESS WHAT?? HE REFUSED TO LET US EAT!!!
He insists that the picnic items (Onigiri) are unsuitable for us and refuses to let us eat. But we must wait for him to eat first as he is hungry.
At this point, we are just so tired of arguing with him already. So we waited in the car as he ate his onigiri slowly. After finishing his meal, he unwillingly bought us across the road to an empty snowfield, and we just hiked around the area for around 1 hour. After that, he drove us back to the hotel. It was an est. 30mins drive, and we reached our hotel at 2:34 pm.
Although the tour description mentioned that there would be a hot drink and a cookie break with a picnic lunch for full-day tours – we did not enjoy any of this at all. We went hungry the whole time without any drinks or snacks. We only had coffee at the café at Iwante (that we paid for, including the guide's coffee).
So, instead of the originally planned full-day tour that included lunch and was supposed to last from 09:00 to 15:00, the payment of ¥47,500 only covered less than 2 hours of snowshoeing with shuttle service and a guide who was unprofessional and rude.
I would not recommend this tour to anyone, as the experience was terrible. The tour guide seemed intent on rushing through the tour and cutting it short. He kept making excuses that he felt we were tired as we had only arrived in Hakuba the day before. We had to keep arguing that we ARE NOT tired! Then, when he cannot get his way, he starts to throw a tantrum, play the blame game, and claim we keep changing our minds!!?? Seriously, we could not understand his behaviour. We were sitting in the car most of the time with barely an hour of snowshoe tour done at that point. (Undoubtedly, this excuse is too lame)
We had joined several tours previously, but this was the worst tour ever experienced. The unprofessional behaviour and lack of respect for the guests' time and interest in the tour were utterly unacceptable. I urge others to avoid this tour and find a more professional and courteous tour guide elsewhere.
(Note: when he asked if we wanted to have lunch elsewhere instead of his picnic items, he also mentioned that he had no cash with him. At that point, we had assured him it was okay we would treat him to lunch instead. Perhaps that was why he was so upset, making the rest of the tour uncomfortable and awkward when we declined to go for lunch and wanted to proceed with the picnic instead.)

The snow shoe tour was great! I never would have know to go to these beautiful woods on my own. The guide was excellent. He brought hot tea, coffee and soup, along with some yummy cookies and other snacks for the full day tour. We sat and enjoyed the gorgeous snowy forests and stunning Mountain Views.

Four friends and I had an amazing day of backcountry skiing in Cortina. Probably the best part about the day was our guide, Angel. He shared with us his deep experience of the Hakuba Valley and backcountry skiing techniques. He was great company, very friendly, and provided excellent service to us. Thanks for an awesome day!

We really enjoyed two days of ski touring with Johnny as our guide ! The snow conditions were very challenging with a prominent ice crust, but he did a great job of finding us some fresh snow in the trees and taking us up to a high point above the clouds offering gorgeous views of Hakuba’s peaks. He knows the local terrain incredibly well. Would recommend!!

Assistant teachers are very friendly, and serious properly about rules about what kids were supposed to keep. Our kid wants come again soon. :-)
Plus, in Hakuba, snow condition much better than in Fujimi Panorama Snow Resort or Karuizawa.
とても良かったです。

先生達もフレンドリーで生活面も親切に面倒を見ていただきました。

Booked a day of ski touring with my husband and parents who are in their late 60s and it was their first time in the backcountry. Dave was the best guide we could have asked for! His decades of experience guiding in Hakuba showed in his knowledge and guidance for my parents who were total newbies. Dave took great care to make sure my parents were comfortable the whole time. They had a great time - as did my husband and I as a result.
As an aside I also wanted to note that the booking process was pretty straightforward. Ken was very responsive over email.
Bonus: Dave spotted us on the slopes the next day from a chairlift and shouted our names! Nice to see a familiar face.
Thanks team!

In my experience I really enjoyed snowboarding with Dave. I also had a opportunity to learn tricks with Conner. This trip had brought me to a level surpassing my dad’a level for he has been snowboarding much longer then I have.

Does the snowshoe tour have a great view of the alps? or is it only a tour around the forest? Thank you.

Thanks guys, I thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days together riding everything from the soft shoulders to first lines in the backcountry. We were lucky with the weather and the snow conditions to boot. Sam I was so impressed with how well you did out in the mountains as we had some BIG days in some BIG terrain. I look forward to getting the chance to ride with you all again in seasons to come. All the best for the rest of the year.
Sincerely,
Dave Enright

Hi, we would be in Nagano between 22 Dec to 26 Dec and would like to book classes for my 2 kids, aged 11 and aged 16. Me and my husband would like to learn for a day or maybe 2 but my kids can continue to take classes on the 3rd and 4th day.
Is it possible to have a family class on the 1st day and then my kids can have the group class with the kids.
If not possible, can you advise suggestions.
Our language is english, we don't speak Japanese.
On more thing, will there be enough snow to ski on the date that we arrived?
Thank you and hope to have an enjoyable time learning from your staff.
Best regards
Sarah

Go somewhere else - they are TERRIBLE! Your kids will make zero progress. Speaking from experience - 6 & 7 year olds!
