I heard about Mugenkyo no Watashi from Fukushima Travel, and the experience did not disappoint. I found it very easy to book online, which I did as soon as reservations were open for our preferred time, as we were visiting from Australia. The starting location was easy to find.
We visited in autumn, and the scenery was spectacular. It was so peaceful riding in the old-style boat, and our guide chatted to us about the area, including pointing out when the Tadami Line train would be passing. Our 13 and 8 year old children also loved the experience, and enjoyed seeing the beautiful surroundings from the perspective of the water.
I think that, as long as you have some basic Japanese skills, international visitors can still get a lot from this experience. If you have no Japanese, definitely hire a translator so that you can enjoy learning a little about the area.
I highly recommend Mugenkyo no Watashi, and we would book again on a future visit.

The Mugenkyo ferry ride was a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, where the only sound I could hear was the sound of the rowing of a small boat, and I was able to enjoy the luxury of gazing at the yellow leaves of the trees. It was a blissful 45 minutes where I could clear my mind. I recommend it. This ferry, which has been featured in various posters and movie onesies, goes around the Tadami River from one boarding point to the other, and you lose track of time. It was a project run by mostly young people, and I enjoyed it.

霧幻峡は、福島県大沼郡の金山町と三島町の境界にある只見川の渓谷です。
夏の朝・夕に川面から立ち込める霧の幻のような美しさから、この名称が付いたそうです。
和の情緒たっぷりの小型の渡し船に乗船するには、5日前からの予約が必要とのことで、当日は乗船できませんでしたし、霧も発生していなく・・・。
今回は紅葉を楽しむ秋の訪問でしたが、次回は霧発生の確率が高い夏に再訪したいと思います。
なお、船頭さんの御一人は凄腕のカメラマンで、道の駅「奥会津かねやま」のギャラリーには彼の素敵な霧幻峡の写真が何枚も展示されています。

Our family of four had a relaxing hour on the ferry.
As Hoshi-san was away, we had Sato-san as our pilot. He was bought up in the area and after working in Tokyo retired back in his home town. He was a font of knowledge, explaining some of the history of the area, the animal calls (we had baby bears crying) and the local fauna and flora.
Basically you have two choices: two 30 minute rides which basically cross the river and allow you to visit the abandoned town or a 1 hour ride which goes a little further up and down stream. We chose the latter as we had already seen the abandoned village. The ride was relaxing and the ravine and emerald green Tadami river were pretty. If I were to be critical, although the experience was interesting and relaxing, you don’t go far in 30 minutes each way.
Cost: Y5000 for 4 in a boat. Booking is through the local Tourist Office and can take up to a week to finalise. [Okuaizu Tourism]
It is also worth combining this with a visit to the local onsen: Tsuru no Yu. If I were to do it again I would overnight at the Onsen and take an early ferry ride in the hope of seeing the early morning mist.
