This tour is so good that I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to thank Kaori San publically — and hopefully convince others to join her tours.
I took two tours by Kaori San, the 9am tour of Okunoin Cemetery and the 3:30pm tour of the other main temple areas (Garan and Kongobu-ji). As we walked through the cemetery, Kaori San explained its significance, main features, and even told interesting stories about some of the shrines. The experience was similar when we strolled through the other temple grounds.
What I appreciated the most, after having travels through Japan for five weeks, is the depth to which Kaori San went into to explain the various, complex facets of the religions/ faiths present at Koyasan. She not only answered my endless questions, but given her knowledge as a Nationally Certified guide, she also tied things together for me—referring to the things I had seen during my Kumano Kodo pilgrimage or my stay at Eiheiji temple.
This tour was not your typical Airbnb experience that’s focused on taking your picture and sharing laughs. This is a tour focused on real learning and understanding.
May I add that the Meditation at Kongobuji temple at 1:30pm was a great way to get even more knowledge of Shingon Buddhism (the Monk who led it spoke great English as he had been in Hawaii) and eating at Kadohama was delicious. Perfect day.

We wanted to learn more about Koya san and decided to take the walking weekly tours, both the okuin 9 am and the 1 PM tour of the 2 other temples. Each tour is about 90 mins each.
We had in both cases Kodama san giving us the tour and we cannot recommend her highly enough. A woman who has a lot of knowledge of Koya san and its history, full of anecdotes and who cares for her guests.
We learned a lot and highly recommend taking these tours if you are in Koya san.

We went on a tour of the temples with Midori. It was raining heavily but we were keen to do a tour. I was surprised the tour wasn’t cancelled as the weather was terrible and if I had been a tour guide I would definitely have cancelled. But the team were keen to help. The tour was really informative and interesting. It definitely enhanced the experience of seeing the temples. Highly recommended.

Good walking tour with a woman who was deeply knowledgable about the religious aspects of the garan temple complex. It was very interesting and almost spiritual.
We took the 3 pm tour for 1.5 hours - well worth it.

We visited this location and hired the services of two of the tour guides. Very worthwhile, especially the cemetery tour.

We stopped here to check on a few things when we arrived in Koyasan. The woman who helped us was very knowledgeable and went out of her way to be sure all of our questions were answered. She also offered additional tips and insights and there was a helpful brochure. If you have questions during your stay, I would visit the information center.

We booked on the scheduled afternoon walking tour with the tourist office at the main square. My husband and I were the only 2 people on the walk that day. We had a lovely guide. Her name was Natsumi (I hope I have spelt that correctly). She was a lovely guide. Very friendly. Lots of information. She even provided me with insect bite cream (and insisted I keep the whole tube) after some little horrors decided to feast on my legs in the late afternoon.
An enjoyable afternoon learning about some of the history and temple and shrine ceremonies.

Thank you for your comment. This year, it is still hotter than usual and walking along the cemetery, there are still some mosquitoes are there. Most of our guides are preparing for that and also ready for all emergency.

I am travelling to Japan for the first time next week and am int to stay in Komyoin on the 29th Dec 2014 for a day and leave for Kyoto the next day. Could you kindly advise if this place is ava and how much will it be?
