This an excellent little museum. When we visited the volunteer on duty was immediately friendly and proved very knowledgeable about the museum's collections and the area's history. The museum is typical of many small local museums - lots of collections of materials that relate to the area's natural and Maori history, as well as its more recent history as a centre for agriculture and fishing. There is a huge collection of (catalogued) newspapers, which could be very useful for anyone researching family history. My favourite section was that on Maori stone tokis (adzes). The assembly of tokis was impressive and the explanatory notes very useful. Free to enter but I am sure the volunteers would appreciate all donations. They are doing a great job and deserve some help.

Stopped in here when visiting for the weekend a few months back, absolutely lovely staff and very welcoming. The Museum has some really funky things inside and is well worth a stop in after a coffee in the town. Would highly recommend.

This museum has a great collection of old newspapers, various household (and beyond) items (from electric dog collars to washing machines) and also displays some of the Maori history. We had an enjoyable time scanning the vast collection of newspapers (all of them available to open and read) and looking over - and reminiscing for some of us - the old household items on display. There is a nice relaxed feel to the museum and it is definitely worth the time to stop and explore.

Awesome little museum and such lovely ladies who were looking after it. Some very interesting info on the region and an amazing 200 year old piano that plays itself when you pump the feet which they let us do.

A must do if ever in Mokau. Well laid out and interesting exhibits. Donation entry and a great place for kids.

This is a fabulous little gallery with wonderful energy and really enthusiastic people. Ian told us he started the trend by displaying all the early photos people brought along. One thing led to another and the whole community got behind the Museum project. We got a wonderful personal tour with him and were delighted to hear his knowledge shine. This is a fitting tribute to the spirit of the locals. Thank you everyone for sharing such fantastic memories and keeping local history alive and in the public eye.

This small museum has something for everyone...traditional displays, lots of photos to look at, Maori Taonga/artefacts, an historic jail and an art gallery with changing exhibitions. The staff are lovely, and get Ian talking about a subject you are interested in and you come away richer for it. I did. A nice concise museum about the local area.
There a donation box, and it is well worth putting in any spare gold coins to help this excellent small museum keep running in my opinion.
