Don't miss this opportunity!

This tour/tour company is a 'must'. The 3-hour cruise up the Mokau river is truly delightful. A great commentary by local and very knowledgeable tour guides gives a very unique and interesting fact-laden opportunity to appreciate the huge amount of history, pathos, murder and mayhem that this spot had incurred over a long period of time. The trip goes at a nice leisurely pace past a lot of whitebait 'stands' which line the riverbank and have a lovely backdrop of native bush. Apart from the slight engine noise the solitude is amazing. At one point we get off and go (with Ian) through a loop of native bush back to the boat. Lovely trip there and back. Oh - the scones, cream and jam are not to be missed! Well worth the trip. Thanks to all for a memorable trip.

Our Travel Club went for a trip on the Mokau River with Mokau River Tours -interesting glimpse of early NZ history, whitebaiting etc. Had a whitebait lunch on boat, followed by trip up river, then bush walk followed by afternoon tea of scones with jam & cream etc. Well looked after by Ian, Brenda & family. A worthwhile trip

A hidden history in this river

This trip is one we had wanted to do for a long time. Mokau-the whitebait capital of NZ- is a place you pass through on the way to New Plymouth along the coast with a river that has always intrigued us. The trip on this quite big motor launch takes you mainly up river past dozens of whitebait stands and loads of regenerating native bush to Bushman's landing. Ian as our guide has lived in the area for 50+ years and had lots of stories to tell and photos to show us. It was a 3 hour trip but we spent almost an hour at Bushman's landing where we walked through some magnificent native bush and viewed huge kahikatea trees, native orchids and gully ferns. It would have been helpful to know to wear or bring suitable walking shoes for the track. Belinda (Ian's daughter) had cooked up a storm on the barbie and provided a delicious afternoon tea of scones with jam and cream plus tea and coffee for our return down river. This trip goes on demand year round rain or shine and you'll learn a lot about coal mining and timber milling as well as the hardship of the early settlers in this quite remote area. This trip is different to the other tour in the area called the cream boat tour and I think we made the best choice on the day!Some souvenirs were available for purchase although cash is required both for the trip and for any souvenirs purchased as eft pos is not available.
