The visit to the castle was great. However…..

The catering van in the gardens was served by a sullen, rude and it would appear female who frilly could not care if she was there or not.
Despite a menu board offering pizza, sandwiches and other items we were greeted with a sullen faced woman who announced ‘We only have sausage rolls.”
8 pounds lighter we wer handed 2 9 inch soggy pieces of grease.
Avoid at all costs.
As for the woman serving, find another job as you obviously are not interested in the one you are currently employed in.

Best wait until the cafe re-opens

We arrived around 1.00pm and the temporary food and drink station had already virtually run out of food. The castle grounds are pleasant enough to walk round. We never went into the castle as we had a dog with us. The main toilets are in the castle building so you have to pay to use them. There are other more basic toilet facilities in the car park. We would not go again until the proper cafe re-opens.

What an amazing place

This visitor attraction is well worth a visit. Plenty of information, plenty of interactive bits and bobs for kids to do. Very informative and very well laid out. The staff and volunteers are a credit all talkative and quite happy to answer all my questions!

Its not a castle its a big house

Beautiful building it wasnt that well signposted round displays ĺwere ok. Of course there is a lot of reading and such. However it did not enthrall nor inspire for another visit from the carpark signposts leave a lot to be desired when you expect a castle and not a stately home

Highcliffe Castle: What A Gem!

What a wonderful experience at Highcliffe Castle! From the moment we arrived, the volunteers were so helpful and friendly; particularly appreciated as my Dad is a little unsteady on his feet these days.
The internal castle areas are interesting, with photos in each room, allowing visitors to envisage family life at the 'castle'. Most areas were open to the public at the time we visited.
Walking outside the castle into the grounds, you'll find some fabulous gardens with walking trails. There are plenty of chairs to sit down. The real jewel in the crown is the sandy beach which is accessible from the castle gardens down a fairly easy to walk zig zag path.
We visited on a sunny Sunday in August but honestly any time of year a visit would be both informative and enjoyable.

We visited the area last year and didn’t know this was here but we are so glad we came across it this year as it was a lovely place to stop. We had read reviews mentioning the kids crafts in the holidays and along with it being a relatively cheap place for a family to visit we thought it would be a good place to go and we were right. Easy to find and with plenty of parking. The ladies doing the kids crafts which were free were lovely and a great idea to entertain the kids but we also loved the interactive kitchen play area and the dressing up area too! We were surprised it wasn’t busier but happy it was easy to navigate with lots of clean toilets inside. The only downside was the indoor tearoom not open currently but the one outside was nice and we walked with our coffee down to the beach which was also lovely to have access too. Worth a visit and we would go back again.

a real gem

What a find – a real gem! Highcliffe Castle is a wonderful example of sympathetic conservation after such a dreadful fire. There are lots of boards in the castle explaining the history of the property including the fires and previous occupants e.g. Mr Selfridge. We found there was just enough interesting information to inform but not overload. As members of Historic Houses and other similar organisations, we are regular visitors of interesting properties and we both agreed that Highcliffe Castle is amongst the best. Well done!

Children's entertainment = Grandparent rest

The kitchen was our favourite as our three grandchildren played in there with the cooker, utensils and food whilst dressed up for ages, and ages :-)

They also made seagulls in the craft room. Coloured drawings and more dressing up kept them entertained with very little effort on our part. A good respite day!!!!!

We would probably have stayed longer but the car parking limit called!

Great summer holiday visit with grandchildren

Been before as we live very close by. Took 2 granddaughters aged 9&11. They loved it. Plenty of activities for them including craft, dressing up, etc. we were there around 2.5 hours.
If we’d gone just as adults we’d have been round way more quickly and not found it too interesting

Gutted by fire but still an interesting visit

The hotel overlooks the beach at Mudeford and can be accessed by car or a nice walk from Mudeford Beach.
Unfortunately the castle was completely gutted by fire many years ago and the place was completely gutted, so there are hardly any furniture items there. The conservatory and associated rooms are utilised for weddings and wedding receptions. The castle is still worth a visit and you should be able to complete your tour in under an hour.
