A must try train trip in Brienz Switzerland!!
The experience was awesome!! The price of the ticket is pricey.

This was the last mountain railway in Switzerland I'd not done. It was difficult to fit it in given I live in Australia, and this railway has a very limited operating season.
We connected from a railway replacement road coach originating in Lucerne.
It was easy to buy tickets. The railway had seven locomotives (all but one being steam) operating on the day we used it. Tickets at CGHF94 were very expensive, though less so than ripoff Jungfraubahn.
The conductress was pleasant and spoke good English.
Views from the train are superb, and in some places there are a negligible number of roads. I don't know what the steepest gradient on the railway is: perhaps 1 in 20?
The driver and fireman were friendly and allowed close-up photos.
After a brief time at the summit, we returned, as we had other plans that day. The journey down was a bit of an anticlimax as we'd taken many photos and videos on the way up.

Die Fahrt war wirklich wunderbar, mit dem Wtter hatten wir auch Glück
Wir haben zusammen über 140.- Franken bezahlt, das ist imho "switzerlanded".
Trotzdem wär ein flair für die Naturschönheiten hat, dann wird man nicht enttäuscht.
An der Haltestelle Planalp verkaufte die Alpkäserei Rotschalp einen wirklich angenehmen milden Alpkäse.

... because it is the way to reach the peak of Brienzer Rothorn mountain. I knew that it took an hour, but I didn't realize how much time is an... entire... hour... and with the constant chugging of that engine. The ascent is slow and relentless. It certainly was not (one of) the highlight(s) of our time there.
TIPS
Be prepared- it gets you where you need to go, but it is slow and relentless and there is constant "chugging" noise and sound.

Die Fahrt mit der alten Dampfbahn ist toll. Jedoch lässt die Organisation mit den Online-Tickets und garantiertem Sitzplatz etwas zu wünschen übrig. Die Gäste ohne garantierten Sitzplatz stehen schon früh vor dem entsprechenden Eingang und man muss sich so an den schimpfenden Gästen vorbeizwängen, welche einem auch noch bewusst den Weg versperren (offensichtlich ist das System nicht allen bekannt). Dazu kommt, dass die Gäste ohne garantierten Sitzplatz ebenfalls sehr früh durch den Eingang kommen, noch bevor die Bahn überhaupt vor Ort ist, und sich dann vordrängen (schliesslich waren sie ja zuerdt vor dem Eingang). Auf diese Weise sind dann die beworbene Platzauswahl und gleichzeitig die CHF 8.00 pro Person dahin. Deshalb unbedingt auf ein solches Zusatzticket verzichten und einfach früh genug anstehen (auch wenn das Zusatzticket von der Bahn ‚empfohlen‘ wird; bringen tut es nichts).
Tipp: Ab dem 29.8. wird das Bergrestaurant umgebaut und es steht bis Ende Jahr nur ein kleiner Take Away zur Verfügung. Wenn man also gerne hochfährt und oben einige schöne Stunden geniessen möchte, empfiehlt es sich, zuzuwarten bis 2023. Bei uns, bereits einige Tage vor Baubeginn, flog ein Hubschrauber alle 5 Minuten über unsere Köpfe. Bergruhe geht definitiv anders.

Quelle belle expérience ce train à vapeur … et le panorama au sommet … WOUAH … une vue splendide à couper le souffle … nous en avons pris plein les yeux. Avec l’abo demi-tarif ça reste raisonnable. Par contre les 8 francs supplémentaires c’est un peu de l’arnaque … on pensait rentrer dans les premiers en se présentant tôt et bien même pas .. de personnes arrivaient aussi par une autre entrée, tout le monde c’est précipité donc pas vraiment favorisé pour les places . Mon conseil y aller hors vacances scolaires et éviter les week-ends.

The view is super. In a sunny day the turquoise Brienz lake looks amazing.
There is a place for a picknick.
Many flowers and herbs can be found on the slopes, sometimes you can catch even goats.
The train: better view is from the door-side (left). The ride takes more than 1 hour, so be sure to plan transit accordingly.
In tunnels it's really hard to breath because of the terrible smell.
Be aware, they don't appreciate big prams because of the limited space for luggage. Otherwise hold it on your knees.

I assume the same hotel start and finish of a day excursion. The Rothorn and Schynige Platte are similar experiences and need a dry and sunny day. Either could be readily incorporated in an excursion from a near resort, Interlaken. From a further away resort, e.g. Spiez or Kandersteg (with lunch at Migros in either Interlaken restaurant - not I.West on a Sunday) the very scenic boat return , Brienz to Interlaken Ost, is an attractive and relaxing option with refreshments.. Both steam train options offer exciting and extensive panoramas. You might want to compare the fares.
I hope that helps. Homework on schedules (sbb.ch and google the voyage) is essential.

Ok, to start with we had done mt. pilatus early in the day. That could effect our thoughts. The 1 hour train ride was interesting but very slow. When we got to the top, there was minimal trails to hike, and the view was nice. This would have been extremely expensive, but since it was free with our hotel it was worth doing.
You can stay at certain hotels, and this is included. For us the hotel room night was 500 euro's and the cost for my family to ride this would have been the same. So in the end it was worth it but we were tarnished because of the magnificent mt. pilatus early inthe day

Hello I have read lots of great tings about this attraction. Please can anyone help? Wader from Canada says you can do the train incorporating a lake ride too - I would like to try and fill a day of this trip with my mum - not very mobile but can manage some things. Can you please tell me how / from where etc you can do this as a train ride up, back down but with boat ride? thanks so much

This train ist located in BRIENZ - a little village in the Bernese Oberland. Indeed, you can combine the boat trip on Lake Brienz with a train trip to the Brienzer Rothorn. For more information, please contact the local Brienz tourist office (you can google it).

We recommend you to buy your ticket including guaranteed seat in advance in our webshop. This way you can avoid waiting times on site.
We have a parking lot about 200-300 meters from the station. It is signposted.

Both sides are beautiful - on the left side of the train you can see more of the lake, on the right side of the forest and the closer landscape.
In the morning, the distant view is slightly better, so we recommend that you come early enough.

Hi. Plans to do this trip 1st week October. From Interlaken via train to Brienz then take this steam train ride round then back again to Interlaken via train. Is this doable half day? Cause we’re planning also to go to Thun in the afternnon. Thanks

Not easy as you would want to do the magnificent walk to the top of Mt Rothorn as the views cannot be missed. Better to take more time and take the boat trip back to Interlarken.

Hi we are travelling to Switzerland in September my plan is to get the train from Interlaken to Brienz. Then go up on the Rothorn railway then go back on the boat to interlake. Is this doable? How long is the walk from the train station?

Hi there,
I am looking for some clarification around hiking up Brienz Rothorn. I know there is a hiking ticket, so does this mean getting the train from Brienz to Planalp and then hiking from Planalp to the summit? Or hiking from summit to Planalp and then taking the train back down to the base?
Is there an option to hike from the base to the summit? What would people recommend, to take the train the whole way up, hike all of the way, hike part of the way? Appreciate your help, thanks!

We bought one way ticket to the top and then had a fantastick hiking trip to the cable station at Turren. At the bottom there is a shuttle bus to the train station from where you could take the train back to Brienz. We used appr. 4 hours including a stop.
