If you travel to Taishan during Golden Week, the national holiday in October, Taishan will be incredibly crowded and the crowds will leave garbage all over the place. If you can travel to Taishan at an off-peak time, that's your best bet. The little city of Taian, at the foot of the mountain, is friendly and incredibly clean, like the rest of the province of Shandong. The Gateway To Heaven, the final stage of the climb up the mountain, is a dirty mess. It's dangerous as the steep stone stairs are short and not lighted and doubly dangerous when covered in plastic water bottles, fast food wrappers, cigarette butts, and other garbage. You can skip the stairs by taking a cable car, called a rope car on the mountain, after taking a bus most of the way up Taishan, but you still have to deal with huge crowds on the top of the mountain. The local tradition is to rent a great coat and sleep in a cave or any place you can find on top of the mountain, so you can see the sun rise, or stay where the rope cars start and hike up to the top at 3 in the morning to catch the sunrise at six. Taishan is a sacred, historic, cultural, mountain that attracts millions of tourists each year but they are not enlightened, awakened, or spiritual tourists, with a few exceptions. Be prepared for a rough adventure.

Caution....you must be in very good physical condition....the paths contain many steep stairs and seem to go on forever without much variety. The paths will take you in a loop...be prepared to spend 2 hours to complete one path. Ypur hips and legs will be very sore the next day. The temple is still under construction...a huge concrete and steel fabricated monstrosity. The monks are nice to talk to. Be well travelers!!!!

Неплохая зеленая прогулочная зона, относительно чистая, даже удивительно для Тайшаня. На входе подобие аттракционов и тренажеры. Далее прогулочная зона вокруг озера, мы обошли его за полтора часа быстрым шагом.

I was in doubt if I should make a review or if I should make a blog about this place. It is incredible the feeling of climbing those infinite stairs during the whole night, passing through small stores, temples, wilderness... I could not stop myself when I was seeing elderly and children, entire families, groups of friends, couples - all with a simple and magnificent target: See the sunrise from the Taishan mighty summit.
You will get exhausted, perhaps hurt, probably will end up around your physical limits. At the end, if you have a minimum adventure spirit, you will feel: "IT IS worthy"
PS.: Pay attention to the last quarter, the ancient stairs were not built following our latest safety standards, so it can get really dangerous. Please hold tight into the steel bar you find on both sides as much as possible to mitigate the risk of serious injury.
