Kodajadri Trekk

Trekking , PTU from Bangalore, started at around 9pm from blr, reached Nittur at around 730am, refreshed at a home stay. Started the trek at 9am. It's 14km trek to Kodajadri hills via paddy fields, forest , crossed hidulmane falls, entered the grass lands the uphill climb was a bit hard. Had the packed lunch at a small oasis with a natural spring at around 12:30pm, it's again uphill to the kodajadri hills the view is splendid. You will reach a jeep trail from there another hour to Sarvanjna peeda (adi shankara).

Breathtaking view

It was one of the most memorable trip that I ever had. The best part of the trip was the Jeep ride from down to the top. The jeep drivers are real expert drivers and one should never miss this ride. You will have to bargain for the rate other wise they will loot you like anything. Also trekking can be done, which is a tiresome activity. You will have to carry enough water and food with you as there is no shop in the top.

The Kudajadri peak presents a not to be missed lifetime opportunity in the evening as the sun sets in the west. You can also have a golden glimpse of the Arabian Sea for a moment. The altitude of 1343 m above sea level can be reached by a five-hour trek. At the peak it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya did meditation. And to substantiate the same you will find a 'Sarvajna Peetha' at the top. En route to the peak you will also find a moderate sized waterfall deep inside the evergreen forest of Kodachadri, which is called 'Agastya Teertha'. The famous temple town of Kollur is 12 km away

amazing temple on he hill top

this is approx 110 km from shimoga.dont miss sunset here.amazing.Carry your own food as you won't find any restaurants on top of the hill.

Kudajadri is both a pilgrim place as well as a trekking place. Jeeps are available for hire from kollur (Rs 2800 per trip, also available for 300 per person near the temple) or from nittur (Rs 2000). Full trekking path (around 20 kms) is another option from nagodi village.

Jeeps takes you till the adimookambika temple / guest house and the last leg is really tough as the jeep runs through non existant roads.

From the temple, the trekking path is 2 kms till the sankara temple and then a steep descent to chitramoola. We can get watermelon, pineapple, buttermilk etc on the way.

The sceneries are awesome.

It was not a day when the lush green forest fields of Kodachadri hill was covered with mist. Temperature level was moderate and sky was clear without clouds.
For ease of understanding I would like to divide the 12-13 KM trekking path into two. First phase is starting from forest check post/Kodachadri entrance (between Kollur-Shimoga) to a small tea shop which is comparatively easy and hence you can cover it swiftly but Lepidopterology and ornithology have a wide scope over this area due to the abundance of respective subjects. Second phase starts from the tea shop and there are so many narrow steeps and upward climbing (but I can say it is only a moderate level of climbing) and definitely will cause huge calorie loss.
Atop the hill, PWD guest house caters minimum facility to stay without any privacy.. glass windows lack curtains and bathrooms without doors..!, but real adventure seekers will not be much bothered due to this.Prior booking for stay and food at PWD is highly recommended ; if availability of rooms are nil check with Mr.Bhatt (priest of nearby temple).

Must visit Sarvanjapeeta & Ganapathi Guha and walk down to the place where you started your journey. Don’t try to cover this fully at stretch in one day, hence just stay on the hill top one night.If your stay at this place and visit to the above mentioned places is on a full moon day the overall experience will be whimsical.

A Mountain that hosts All Wilde life!

Kudajadri Hills stand as a gigantic monutain in the mdist of vast land. It is great Mountain that hosts various wild animals. I love to see this mountain as it looks very good in rainy season with lots of green vegetation. It has a great rock structure of geological significance. I recommend this place for people interested in mountaineering. It gives lots of challenge for the adventurous people!

Trek up the hill during the monsoon has a beauty in itself. Climbing up among the lush greenery with rain drizzling from above is fun. The place has all kinds of terrain that a trekker wpuld want. Starting with the plain grassland near the KTO office, where the climb starts, to thick forest, to a patch of grasslands again, where if ur lucky enough, will be able to camp. It has a tiny stream flowing through the middle of it. Ascend to the top for the view is again through a patch of forest, which opens up again to open spaces as you reach the peak.
On a clear sunny day, one can even see the Arabian sea from the peak. Unfortunately it was too foggy that day but not being able to see even the person next to you was a fun in itself.
Recently camping has been banned in the hill and the officers wpnt allow you to take your camping tents up the hill. We had to leave them intheir office.
For thise who want to reach the peak and dont want to trek, there are jeeps available. They will take you up and bring you back or one way as needed. Jeep ride is also fun, considering that there is barely any road.
One thing to watch out during the monsoons would be the leeches. Carry salt or leech sovks if your too concerned about them..
