The Monument of Mahabalipuram is a complex of rock-cut temples, monolithic structures, caves and numerous other structures that had been declared a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its historical significance (7th - 8th centuries). Mahabalipuram is a very elaborate hand-carved temple complex that is exquisite in design and workmanship. The images of this complex speaks volumes about how nice it is to look at.

There are many, many reviews on this location. I would just add that we really enjoyed this area. It was definitely hot and humid in August but we still enjoyed walking between the different locations and in the well cared for parks. We have been to many sites in India and this is one of the best cared for sites we have seen. Not to be missed.

It's a nice place for relaxing and also getting a glimpse of history. The beaches are laid back and not crowded and much polluted. Krishna's butter ball and the monuments around it is a must watch. it is one of the UNESCO heritage sites. It was a very pleasing and fulfilling visit.

It was really nice to buy one ticket for all the monuments in the area - plus the price of the ticket was very reasonable, even for foreigners.
All of the monuments had some information about each of them. But maybe it would have been better with a guide as the information on them wasn't exhaustive.
You can get a ticket at either the Panchas Rathas, Butter Ball, or Shore Temple. Be prepared to walk a lot between each of the monuments - especially be prepared if it will be a hot day (maybe even consider short tuk tuk rides between them all).
There are also plenty of vendors around and in the areas of where the monuments are. I recommend buying some sodas like pineapple soda from them.
Oh and one more thing, there are also a ton of dragonflies flying around the monuments which was very cool and peaceful to watch.

The monuments at Mahabalipurnam are a true treasure to the entire humanity. Amazing stone carvings, sculptures and temples. We spent a couple of days visiting and it was hardly enough time to take it all in.

Mamallapuram/Mahabalipuram har blitt verdenskjent etter at en gruppe av disse stein monumenter har blitt satt på Unesco's verdensarv liste i 80 årene. Er man på tur til Chennai bør denne avstikkeren på litt under 6 mil planlegges/ huskes på. Er man kommet til Mamallapuram vil man fremdeles se mange steinhuggere i sitt daglige arbeide, området er kjent å ha landets beste yrkesutøvere. Når man studerer deres jobb lurer nok de fleste på hvordan dette arbeide ble utført for ca 1500 år siden - idag er det fremdeles hammer og meisel!? Her finner man også verdens største tilhugget stein monument på 29 x 13 meter. Navnet på dette svære "open-air rock relieff monumentet" er : "Descent of the Ganges" - som er en epos om Hinduismens moralske normer/lover som her fremstiller eller forsøker å anskuelliggjøre sentrale hendelsesforløp som ligger i fortiden, og som kan være oppdiktet eller historiske!?

Boule de beurre de Krishna,
Bel endroit mais payant pour voir cette singularité géologique. Pour une boule de beurre elle ne fond pas vite et ne descend même pas la pente.;-)
Le parc est bien entretenu et pour cet fois, permet une visite sans avoir des vendeurs sur le dos.
La fresque est magnifique mais difficile de se concentrer avec les nombreux vendeurs à la sauvette.

No. You may have to buy 2-3 tickets for different monuments. But at 1 spot there is a combo ticket- 5 rathas.
Yes in south India - Full dress for females- chudidar, slacks suits, saris skirts are required.
Perfect time is 8-9 am to 12 am ... so that its not hot and the sun is not at its peak.. many accomodations are there ranging from 1800 to 3500 rs

En Mahabalipuram hay 3 principales atractivos:
-El templo de la costa (Shore Temple)
-Panch Ratas
-un parque donde hay varias cuevas y el famoso alto relieve "La penitencia de Arjuna"
Para los 2 primeros se paga entrada. El mismo boleto que pagues en un lugar te sirve para entrar al otro.
El otro parque que igual vale mucho la pena es totalmente gratuito.
Como comentario, todo lo que visitas en Mahabalipuram son sitios arqueológicos y no templos que actualmente estén activos, por lo que NO necesitarás quitarte los zapatos en ningún lugar. A excepción del templo de la costa, ahí existe un pequeño cuarto donde la gente se quita los zapatos para meterse y tomarse la foto con un dios. Si por suerte no hubiera gente lo puedes ver desde afuera sin problema ( es un cuarto como de 1 metro por 1 metro)

The small museum/display near the lighthouse make sure the interactive displays are working before payng

A day would be enough to see all the monuments and also relax for a while. Avoid visiting places there in the afternoon as it can be pretty hot. You can drive in the morning such that you reach by lunch time, get into a nice sea view hotel for lunch, visit the monuments, spend sometime on the beach and head back. Great place to spend evenings on the beach there.
