This well curated museum run by volunteers is exceptional by any standard. The first room has a complete display of the sea life in and on the coasts of Iceland as well as a well curated display of Icelandic rocks collected by a local geologist during his long career. These displays were much appreciated by both of us who have biology and geology backgrounds and I think they would be of interest to anyone. The video of short clips running in the room was also very interesting.
The second room houses a large wooden fishing boat which is the second oldest in Iceland. This boat has been carefully restored and is surrounded by the many tools used by fishermen and the carpenters who would have built such vessels. There is even a converted rifle that would send a safety rope out to any fisherman who might have gone overboard. Ask about the 15th century artifact found by the grandfather of one of the volunteers.
On the grounds outside you will see a whale skeleton on the grass as well as a sod house that is as nice as any we have seen throughout our month long trip in Iceland.
The cafe is bright and comfortable. The delicious cakes (we tried the chocolate and apple cakes, but they had several more options) were delicious and are professionally baked by one of the volunteers.

A priori c'était gratuit mais c'est passé à 1300 ISK par personne. C'est donc le même prix que le Louvre pour un musée microscopique. On profitera donc des toits végétalisés de l'extérieur.

Cute little place with decent displays. The house outside is well done. The staff inside were friendly and they had nice cakes inside for a snack. It was a little pricy for admission but they didn't charge for the kids admission.

We stopped at the Maritime Museum at Hellissandur as it looked interesting.
It is manned by volunteers and was very well presented, with 2 large rooms inside detailing the lives of the people around here, focusing, not unsurprisingly on the sea.
Outside there was a typical sod covered farm houses all outfitted as they would have been a long time ago. There was a whale skeleton and especially interesting were the Steintok: 'Lifting Stones', there are 4 of them varying in weights - you have to try to prove how strong you are by lifting up the stones. They have names and their rankings are:
Full Strength: 155 kg
Half Strength: 104 kg
Weakling : 49 kg
Useless : 23 kg
We both were 'Useless' as we only managed the smallest stone!

Would recommend if staying in the area (ie camp site at Hellissandur). I’d budget 45-60 minutes for the stop depending on how much you typically read. Also check the hours in advance.

We stopped for the Fishermen's Garden, specifically the restored turf houses. To go in the garden you have to pay the museum fee. Don't know how much but we didn't have time to go in. We got a couple of pictures of the turf houses from the parking lot. Also, directly across the road from the museum is a store and the guy there knows all things Iceland. The store also has recycle bins and gas.
