Pronounced "Carnoir", this is a very evocative cemetery just off the main road from Albert to Peronne in the rolling Picardy countryside. We came to visit the grave of Major John Somerled Thorpe of the Scots Guards - my husband's great uncle - who died as a result of sniper fire in September 1916. It might not be the biggest WW1 cemetery but if you stand and imagine 800 plus young men each standing behind their gravestone you will get an idea of the devastation that is still remembered in this area. It was pleasing to see that on 11th November 2018 the mayor of Carnoy visited the cemetery amd signed the visitors' book.

We visited here on the 100th anniversary of the death on the Somme of my husband's Grandad. It was a family visit, being a grandson, two great grandsons and a great great grandson and granddaughter. It was a truly moving occasion. We arrived around midday, we had just found the grave when we heard a bang (ferocious claps of thunder) which sounded just like we imagined the guns would have sounded all those years ago. It was really spooky, thunder no rain at all. The cemetery is kept in an immaculate condition by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. It is not a very big cemetery but incredibly peaceful and even if you do not have a connection with this place it is still worth a visit to pay your respects for the freedom we have.
