Small Minoan palace. I always admire the work done, carried out in the Minoan period. How I admire the archaeologists who update all these sites and analyze their creation and functions. The palace of Zakros was important if I believe my readings. Not much remains of it, but it belongs to this rich Cretan past, too bad if it is not as beautiful, as documented as others can be.

Quite a trek to get here but worth it for the siting of the Palace. Certainly it is completely different from the organisation and pazzazz surrounding Knossos. It is very peaceful - when we visited there were perhaps 5 or 6 other people wandering the site. As others have said the presentation is somewhat lacking and really it wouldn't take much time, effort and cost to lift this failure up to far better standards.
However, if you are visiting Minoan Palaces it is worth the journey. Do it so you can have lunch by the beach!

Zakros ist nach Knossos, Phaistos und Malia die vierte und bisher letzte minoische Palastanlage, die auf Kreta entdeckt worden ist. Sie entstand ungefähr 1'900 v. Chr. und wurde - wie die anderen drei auch - um 1'450 v. Chr. komplett zerstört. Wegen der abgeschiedenen Lage im äussersten Osten Kretas und der etwas umständlichen Anreise trifft man auf deutlich weniger Touristen als bsp. in Knossos. Es stehen keine Guides bereit und die wenigen Informationstafeln sind wenig ergiebig. Deshalb lohnt sich der Besuch vor allem mit einem guten Reiseführer oder vorheriger Eigenrecherche. Interessant ist die Anlage alleweil.

Zakros is an interesting site even though signage is insufficient there. Driving to the parking in front of the entrance a somewhat confusing as you have to drive the street between restaurants which looks like a dead end street.

At the extreme east end of Crete, Zakros has a Minoan palace and town. The palace is smaller then others - Knossos, Phaestos, Malia - but has the familiar layout of four zones around a central rectangular-shaped court. It lacks the capacious storage elements of other palaces; the archaeologists' suggestion is that it is more concerned with trade routes to the east than with storage of agricultural produce from the locality. The palace is on flat ground and the streets and buildings of the town occupy the hillsides to the north and west. Town streets are evident, but the overall plan is more difficult to appreciate than those of Gournia or Paliokastro, for example.
The site is well worth visiting, especially when approached at the end of the gorge walk from Ano Zakros, but the visitors' experience is disappointing on account of poor presentation and information. We were greeted with a reception at the ticketing office which was surly and officious. There is an overall site plan on a board as one approaches the palace. This seems to be the archaeologists' published plan with buildings and rooms referenced by Greek letters and Roman numerals, with an Arabic numeral system superimposed on this for the on-site presentation: a confusion of reference systems. The board itself is shabby, with many small cracks on the surface, and so also the other boards around the site. The different sides of the palace are reasonably well supported with zone-specific plans in the same style. It is not clear why the front rooms of the west side are roped off to prevent visitors from walking in these space: there is nothing fragile or dangerous. It smacks of an officious and visitor-unfriendly attitude on the part of the authorities. The elements of the town are less successfully indicated in detailed signage. It is always difficult on these sites of complex town plans to pick out individual buildings and to see the circulation routes between the rooms. Two boards positioned by the port road in the north-east sector of the site do give detailed ground plans of some houses. This is useful. Or it would be so if it were not for the fact that these are buildings on the south-west hill, an area which is not accessible to visitors. So why are these boards here? It seems that those responsible haven't thought about the presentation of the site, or that they simply do not care about the visitors' experience. Zakros is one of the great sites of European prehistory; the location and the remains themselves are spectacular. Why can the Cretan authorities, whose archaeological museums are superb, not present the site in a manner worthy of its significance? I have commented elsewhere on the fact that in September 2022 the palace site of Petras, near Sitia, is locked preventing any access.

This is the smallest of the four Minoan palaces in Crete. It's in a remote setting but an obvious place to combine with a Zacros gorge walk.
As previous reviews have stated there is little signage on the site but we had a decent guidebook for our Crete trip and it included enough information for us to find our way around.
Definitely worth a visit.

Depuis quelques années on constate une inflation des prix d entrée des sites touristiques en Grèce, parfois justifiée, parfois non - ce palais est désormais à 6 euros, pour une visite qui vous prendra 20mn, lecture des panneaux comprise. On ne voit rien de plus que ce que l on voit depuis l entrée du site, moins les tortues dans les bassins, bien sûr. Bien que passionnée d archéologie je ne recommande pas - on a vraiment l impression d être prix pour un portefeuille à pattes. Si vous souhaitez voir des sites minoens plus parlants, aller à Phaistos, ou encore Gournia (bien moins connue mais intéressant).
