In part of Croatia calkef Posavina and Pokuplje you can find a lot of houses made of wood or half concrete and half wood that look like the ones on the photo. They are made without nails and can be separated and moved. It is interesting to visit the obes in Letovanić which are completely furnished.

But... it looked just the same as the rest of the tiny hamlets along the road from Sisak back to Zagreb. The houses largely looked abandoned or in need of significant work (all but a few). Maybe they were "well preserved" when the description was first written.
An interesting drive for a peek back in time, but make sure you have gas and something to drink as there is no place to stop...

Houses, some more hundred years old, still stand a tell the story of craftsmanship of builders. Built of at the time around growing oak trees, back then cheapest building material, cut to dimension on site, and almost without any nail or other material (except for the roof), to provide home for people who lived there, and shelter for animals.
Check it out, it's worth the trouble!

Bellissime case di legno tipiche della zona attorno a Sisak, molte in rovina, altre restaurate, oggi protette dallo Stato che addirittura ne stimola la costruzione. Alcune hanno oltre cento anni, le vere perle sono le chiese di legno, in particolare quella di Letovanić, villaggio famoso per una canzone tradizionale usata spesso nelle mostre folkloristiche dal ritmo allegro, intitolata "Letovanić selo pokraj Kupe" cioé accanto alla Kupa il fiume che oltre alla Sava bagna buona parte di quelle terre. La chiesa in oggetto, vicino alla spiaggia di Letovanić, è del XVIII secolo e a parte il tetto è interamente in legno, davvero suggestiva, peccato che non abbiamo visto l'interno. Alcune di queste case recano una scritta con la data in cui vennero erette. Quelle con i balconi sono dette "čardak" e sono architettonicamente più ricche.

Комплекс деревянных домов расположенных за городом в районе Сисака практически неизвестная достопримечательность, что очень жаль. Здесь интересно прогуляться что ощутить очарование деревенского деревянного стиля домов. Тут потрясающий воздух и небольшая река

If you're not into sunny beaches and the sea, and search for something unique and different, try northern Croatia - the Nature Park of Lonjsko Polje to be precisely.
Located only 70 km south-east of Zagreb, easy accessible with a car,
you will find yourself driving through the villages along the river Sava.
In those villages you will see beautiful wooden houses, some of them even more than 100 years old. One of those villages is also the European Stork Village, Čigoč.
The best time of year to visit would be April or early May, when there's almost one full stork nest on each house in the village.
There's also a small Info and educational center called "Štrokova iža" (Storks house in the local dialect), and a little "museum", the Sučić family treasure, where a nice old couple who lives there can explain and show how the locals lived here on the past- a must see!

Looking for something completely different from the sunny Dalamatian coast with all the beaches and night life? Try interior Croatian towns like Sisak and neighbouring villages of Cigoc & Kratecko. Here there is a really beautiful architectural style of wooden houses. Some of them are in need of repair but they are beautiful all the same.
If you head towards Cigoc and the Lonjsko Polje Park you will find more of these traditional wooden houses - as well as - loads of (very big!) storks which come to nest on the village's rooftops. The storks tend to return to the village in the spring so it is a good time of year to visit. We arrived in early April and didn't see any tourists which was fab. I would say we saw about 10 storks but if you come in May/June more storks will have returned.
A great little place to walk around and take photos. There are some small traditional restaurants in the Lonjsko Polje Park (usually attached to a B&B) but none of them were serving food in April so we had to drive back to Sisak to eat.
If you arrive in the Spring be mindful of flood warnings. Sections of the road to the Park were flooded and diversions were in place.

Very unusual building tradition. The wooden houses are like from a ferytale. Unfortuantely many are in very bad condition and some villages are spoiled with new faceless brick houses.

In een aantal dorpen staan veel prachtige houten huizen van soms meer dan 100 jaar oud. Spijtig dat er vele al verlaten zijn. Sommigen herbergen grote nesten van ooievaars.
