Super Aussicht auf viele Seehunde, ein kleines Beobachtungshäuschen steht bereit und bietet Windschutz. Die Tiere tummeln sich in der Bucht vor den Sandbänken. Auf dem Weg trifft man viele Schafe.

Plusieurs spots d'observation des phoques émaillent la péninsule de Vatnsnes. Nous sommes allés à Illugastadir pour les observer. Un parking permet de garer le véhicule pour enchaîner sur une marche de 10 - 15 minutes menant jusqu'à une cabane disposant d'une paire de jumelles. Les phoques étaient présents juste en bas de la cabane, pour une très belle observation.

Seals can often be spotted from the shore and parking is not too far of a walk from the shore. We saw at least 9 seals when we were there.

It was a nice drive up from Borgarnes. It was cold and windy, and we were able to make out one seal out pretty far on the rocks. Loved the landscape and all the waterfalls on the drive, so we felt like it was worth the trip.

The least exciting seals watching spot on the Vatnsnes peninsula. Coming from Hvammstangi and driving clockwise it was the first one for us and we were quite excited anyhow. The seals sunbathe on a series of flat rocks few metres away from the shore. You need a good camera with telephoto to take very good picture, but the live view is quite an experience.

The walk and the beach is beautiful enough so we weren't too disappointed not to be able to see the seals very well. There were plenty there but just too far away to see clearly.

Before you head off for seal watching along the coast of the Vatnsnes Peninsula, visit the information desk in the Seal museum in Hvammstangi. They provided me with a map with the seal watching locations and also important the time when I could see the seals. To see seals lying on the rocks and beaches, you have to be there around low tide ( from 2 hours before until 2 hours after). And Low tide changes every day.
At Svalbard, I did see a few seals sunbathing on the rocks just off the coast. But to take good pictures you really needed a good telelens. My camera was not good enough.
I found the best location for seeing seals was at Hvitserkur, at the other side of the peninsula.
