Very nice caves if you are interested in history, not very often you see things which are (claimed to be) 6000 years old!
What to expect:
1. As you approach this place there is a parking fee collected, Rs.40/- for the car and they allot you a parking lot number, there are almost 10 of them. Very organised.
2. There is a very steep walk up, approx 1Km. There are shops on the way for eats and tit bits. They are very polite and don't push you much.
3. Then you reach the ticket counters & there are toilets too. Ticket is Rs.50/- per adult.
4. After this the real fun (challenge) starts. There are big steep stone steps up and steel steps down. Approx 300+ steps.
5. This place can get very crowded too, so getting there early in the day is better as the crowds are less and it is not very hot.
6. Assuming the steps can get very slippery during the rains, so exercise caution.
7. Not advisable for people above 70, pregnant women, people with heart ailments, people who don't exercise to do this walk, it'll be too strenuous.
8. Beautiful views from the top and the icing on the cake are the stone carvings, 6000 years old!
Must visit for history lovers for sure!

A challenging uphill walk up to the caves. There are high stone steps followed by metal steps leading to the 2 caves. Many centuries old caves with stone carvings from patterns to what looks like a Sherman priests and what looks like a huge bird like shape. Seems like this place was more of a worship places than place to stay.

Also the place is likely to be closed after 1pm because there is a rule that only 1920 (approx) people per day can visit. Even though the official closing time is 4pm.
Suggestion would be to visit this place in the morning itself around 9 am to avoid crowd and get a ticket.
Quite a lot of shops on the way to caves.
You be charged Rs. 20 if you have a plastic bottle.
Do carry cash since their internet is glitchy (obviously).
The caves are interesting but there is no explanation on what exactly is written on those rocks! You may find some random guy asking for money in exchange of explanation.
The stairs are well constructed, even a senior citizen can climb it.

It's a must visit place in Wayanad. The experience is actually too good. The caved are located on top of the hill so you need to trek to reach the caves. The path till the ticket counter is steep and requires energy to reach there. After the ticket counter there are steps made to climb till the caves. The caves have beautiful carvings on them. It feels too good when you are inside the cave. It's peaceful (offcourse when there is less crowd) and so real. The stones, the structures, the carvings everything is lovely to see.
The view is also amazing from the caves..
PS there are lota of monkeys so beware of your items and dont carry food in hand..

The caves is a reasonably steep climb for about a KM with last portion across boulders. Takes about an hour to climb. Make sure your are physically fit and then only attempt.
The caves are worth a vist if you can afford climb. Well preserved, though more documentation would be better.
There is no facility at the top, so be prepared

A Stoneage - Edakkal Caves Worth visiting.
1. A real wonder in Wayanad..
2. Reaching Caves difficult for old people. But its an amazing wonder by nature..
3. Oldest human settlement discovered Inside the caves are pictorial drawings and engravings & a well cleaned area
4. It will take approximately 2-3 hours depending on your fitness level.
5. SUNSET is best time visit - the majestic sunset & scentic from the top.
6. the place is usually crowded.
7.you will get the finest experience of trekking in the hilly terrrain for 1 km followed by climbing 380 steep steps, to reach the top of the hill.

When you visit Wayanad as a tourist, one of the must-see places mentioned is the Edakkal Caves. These are two Caves that are reached by a walk up the Ambukutty Mala (Hill). It has the only stone age carvings in India, said to be around 6000 years old. The carvings give a glimpse into our pre-historic life.
The first cave hasn't much to offer but the second cave has many rock carvings on the wall. If one looks closely one can see human figures and different forms of animals and weapons, which points to a highly civilized society who lived in the pre-historic age. It is approximately a 90x20 ft cave (not big if one compares to say the Borra Caves near Visakhapatnam). At one end of the cave is a metal barred gate through which you see a view of the hills and forest through a narrow gap between the adjacent hills. There earlier used to be a viewing point on the roof of the cave, from where it is said one could see the three states, Kerala, Karnataka and TN. This has been closed to public since 2009, as the debris falling from the roof by the tourists was damaging the cave.
Situated at around 4000 ft above sea level, it is not an easy trek up. I would warn you that the climb is arduous. If you aren't a big lover of history or archaeology, or if you have a faint heart, BP, asthma or weak knees, esp senior citizens, it will not be a bad idea to give it a miss. First the 1.5 kms trek up the Hill to reach the caves is a constant climbing walk. Once you reach the entrance to the cave (Rs. 50 per head entrance fee) the way to Cave 1 is over uneven rocks. Further from Cave 1 to Cave 2 is by a steel ladder with around 350+ steps.
The arrangements at the site are decent and the staff very helpful. The view from the top of the valley and hills surrounding it is breath-taking. There is very well planned and designated parking available at the foot of the hill. There are local shops at the base and on the trek up the hill selling spices, cool drinks, salted fruits and locally made handicrafts. During the monsoon it could be a bit slippery and in summer it could be cool but the Sun heat could make the trek additionally tiring. The place closes sharply by 4 pm, so try to reach the hill base not later than 2:30 pm.

The climb to the caves is very difficult especially for senior citizens having problem of knees. The stone steps are uneven and some of these are not wide enough. However the view from the top is beautiful.

Long lines to get in. Expect about a kilometer of walking on steep incline roads to get to entrance. Entry closes after about 2000 visitors each day. So better visit early. There are massive lines trying to get to first cave and people jostling to get ahead on steep steps, which is a recipe for disaster some day!! But the upper cave was worth the hike! Breathtaking views and rock engravings.

It is a bit of a hike so try to go when it is not too hot and also try to go early in the morning because as the sun comes up you will find it more difficult to climb.
I have a two year old boy. Is it advisable to carry him and climb up?

No certainly not. You may not be able to carry your child and climb the rocky path. In some places you have to climb 2 ft high on a single rock.

There is no jeep ride. Can hire auto from Kolgappara or Ambalavayal.But ask auto to wait since its difficult to find return.
1.5 km trek from the parking and takes 30 to 45 minutes one way.
if your group have Aged or people who suffer to walk please avoid this place.
Otherwise its good place to visit in Wayanad for both history and trek.

You can find enough buses from sulthan bathery bus station. You can see the bus route boards in the name of Vaduvanchal, Ambalavayal. You may take tickets to Ambalavayal ( Nearly Rs.10) and hire an autorikshaw(Tuk tuk) to edakkal cave ( Nearly Rs. 60). After reaching the parking area of edakkal just 800Mtr walking is necossary to reach the ticket counter of edakkal

Start at morning. Keep in mind that you have to climb some distance to reach the cave. Take rest at points and climb slowly. Enjoy the trip.
