Unforgettable experience. Our guide Jun was fantastic, she was very knowledgeable, funny and spoke great English. Whilst this is a no-touch sanctuary, you get much closer to the elephants than I expected. It’s just amazing to be so close to these amazing animals, in such an ethical setting, they’re clearly so happy and treated very well It’s a must do!

This is a truly ethical elephant sanctuary. There are 4 female elephants (rescued) ranging from mid 30s to 54 yr old, including a mother daughter pair rescued from a logging operation. Only females because they don’t want any elephants bred in captivity. The reserve is 15 acres in size. Minimum recommended acreage is 2-3 acres per elephant according to our guide, but they don’t want to adopt more elephants until they can expand their territory. The elephants roam the reserve with a dedicated mahout during the morning. Your starts with pickup of everyone at their hotel, charge extra if outside of Chiang Mai city, by passenger vans that can accommodate up to 9 guests. Small groups of guests go around with a tour guide who lead you around looking for elephants. Some easy- to moderate hills but not suitable if you have mobility issues - you have to climb over a fence and there are some slippery clay slopes to navigate. They do give you walking sticks. We saw all 4 elephants in morning. Then we prepped sugar cane (chopped them up with machete) for elephants, ate lunch and sat on a viewing platform. Around 1 pm, all 4 elephants come down the hill to feeding tubes where the sugarcane pieces have been placed. It is incredible to see them lined up, eating. You don’t get to touch them or anything but you can observe at a closer distance than I imagined; several times we weee following an elephant as she walked down the trail, and she’d suddenly turn and you’d be practically face to face with her. Just incredible and memorable!

It was only a half day excursion, but felt like a full day. We saw all four elephants much closer than thought. What a feeling when a gentle giant passes you and looks you in the eye.
Our guide Tanya (hope you forgive me misspelling) was excellent. She was very attentive, gave so much interesting information, answered all our questions and made funny comments. She created a friendly and safe atmosphere.
We really like the concept to give the elephants as much freedom as possible. It is sure tempting to touch them, but they are wild animals and honestly, just to be there and observe them is an incredible experience. You track the elephants in their environment to observe them, you can participate to prepare some food and watch them eat later from a nearby platform.
Don’t miss it, if you have to opportunity we definitely recommend this tour. Thanks a lot Tanya and to the mahouts to make this unforgettable experience possible.

Had a lovely day here, did the half day tour which was just right amount of Time. Had a really lovely guide who shared us lots of information and was very nice and funny. Seeing the elephants in their own environment and free in their space was amazing. Very ethical, lovely to see the elephants in such a nice place! Food was lovely too. Definitely recommend

We spent the day with the 4 beautiful elephants..
We chose to visit this sanctuary because it is ethical, we can not really be in physical contact with elephants and are delighted for these animals so majestic that deserve a serene retreat freely in the mountains!
We started the day with a beautiful hike looking for them in the mountains. We were a group of 13 people with a guide. We were able to get very close, at a reasonable distance and we followed them into the mountains watching them eat. They were prepared dessert (bananas and squash) and vitamin balls that we made, put all this in holes in tubes and watched them feast. Two of them then went swimming in the river, the others did not want to, here nobody forces them. It was majestic.
Everything was very well organized from start to finish. We had a delicious vegetarian meal at lunch.
Our guide Nicha was really kind, professional and pedagogical.

The positives - elephants seem well cared for and appear to be living a relatively natural life in beautiful surroundings. Fully hands off experience, which felt good. We saw all 4 elephants relatively soon after arriving - 3 of whom were close together.
Plenty of time to watch and photograph them eating the prepared foods.
Less good - as we saw all 4 elephants relatively quickly, we then returned to base. It would have been good to have spent a little more time in those surroundings - potentially to learn a bit more about the mountainside location. From a later trip, we discovered that much of the mountainside is now used to grow coffee. It would have been interesting to have a better understanding about that during the trip. There was no description on the journey to or from the site. Missed opportunity.
It seems there might be a better way to manage bookings. The driver waited at a couple of pick up points for no show guests and was then delayed in getting to others, one didn’t get picked up at all and had to have a taxi organised. Maybe taking a deposit would reduce the no shows?
Overall would recommend but a couple of small changes would make it exceptional.

Better than most sanctuaries in that you don't touch, bathe or feed the elephants.
The issue is that the animals can't go anywhere without their mahout (keeper), so they're under constant surveillance and "guided" on where to be for the tourists. They also have schedule where they go back to their "shelter" before the big feeding event. the mahouts also help feed and bathe them so not sure how much better this really is.
We then questioned our guide on what happens to the elephants at night time when the mahouts sleep, to which she said they go back to their shelter and after some back and forth she mentioned they use chains to keep them there. Wild elephants sleep an average of two hours, meaning they will be kept chained up for an extended period of time whilst the mahouts aren't available.
Unfortunately, it seems that this company "ethical" washes and uses the same tactics as other sanctuaries.
There is a World Animal Protection article stating that Chang Chill used to do the tourist things and kept them chained for 23 hours per day and have started to transition into a better sanctuary. But it has a very long way to go. Chang Chill haven't saved any elephants, they bought them for the same reasons as other "sanctuaries". Money and tourism.

A Chiang Mai friend arranged this for me. She did it based on a recommendation made by a friend of hers who believes it is very ethical. I think it was okay.
It is an arduous hike up a mountain road of about 1/2 mile. You will be climbing over a wooden stick barricade (~3’ high); you will be going up and down down a slippery path; you will be walking on a narrow bridge made of bamboo poles that do not have a level surface (giant drinking straws on their sides); you will walk on a wooden plank that is 8” wide. I am 65, and able to do all of those things, but I should have brought hiking shoes rather than sneakers. The only communication was that it was an unpaved mountain road, and that closed shoes were required.
My friend also told me that it would be ฿1500 in cash. I was charged 1900. My friend could have made a mistake, as she did not accompany me.
The pick up was extremely late. I had rented an Airbnb and was told to be in the condominium lobby between 730 and 8 AM. My friend made a call for me and I made a call, and both times we were told 10 minutes. I was picked up at 8:38 AM. The drive is about 1.5 hours in a Toyota van. There will be other travelers. They stop at a rest area about half an hour before you arrive at Chang Chill. There are toilets and an ATM there as well as food you can purchase. I sensed they might get a financial reward for bringing the tourists. Our guide encouraged me to buy food and use ATM. I didn’t do it.
When you arrive at Chang Chill you hike 5 minutes to a gathering area. There are sheds with flush toilets, not pits. They tell you to use the shed toilets before you go on the hike to see the elephants. It seemed odd, since we had stopped at the rest area.
They have rescued elephants. The elephants were previously forced by keepers to perform in shows and give people rides. Some of the elephants bear wounds that show they were led by hooks and other things that made me sad.
After you hike into the woods to see the elephants, you hike, back out, and are given a good vegan lunch. That is the point at which they have you pay the money for your tour.
After lunch, you go partway down the road to an elephant viewing area, and the elephants are fed by their keepers. The elephants get very excited, because they are used to being fed on time. If I understand it correctly, they will live their lives in the sanctuary, because the past they endured means that they cannot be reintroduced to life without humans.
I’m a person who really likes to walk and be outdoors, and I enjoyed that. The other visitors who rode in my van were very nice to talk to. They were from the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK. Almost all the visitors were in their 20s and 30s. I am lucky to be fit enough to have kept up with them, but that’s something other visitors should consider before booking. I also don’t think this would be appropriate for very young children, because it could be risky.

Came here with Intrepid group and was totally amazed on the work the staff have done. The elephants are very well looked after and look happy. A vegetarian meal was also provided.
