Better than most sanctuaries in that you don't touch, bathe or feed the elephants.
The issue is that the animals can't go anywhere without their mahout (keeper), so they're under constant surveillance and "guided" on where to be for the tourists. They also have schedule where they go back to their "shelter" before the big feeding event. the mahouts also help feed and bathe them so not sure how much better this really is.
We then questioned our guide on what happens to the elephants at night time when the mahouts sleep, to which she said they go back to their shelter and after some back and forth she mentioned they use chains to keep them there. Wild elephants sleep an average of two hours, meaning they will be kept chained up for an extended period of time whilst the mahouts aren't available.
Unfortunately, it seems that this company "ethical" washes and uses the same tactics as other sanctuaries.
There is a World Animal Protection article stating that Chang Chill used to do the tourist things and kept them chained for 23 hours per day and have started to transition into a better sanctuary. But it has a very long way to go. Chang Chill haven't saved any elephants, they bought them for the same reasons as other "sanctuaries". Money and tourism.
Nothing but a glorified zoo.

A Chiang Mai friend arranged this for me. She did it based on a recommendation made by a friend of hers who believes it is very ethical. I think it was okay.
It is an arduous hike up a mountain road of about 1/2 mile. You will be climbing over a wooden stick barricade (~3’ high); you will be going up and down down a slippery path; you will be walking on a narrow bridge made of bamboo poles that do not have a level surface (giant drinking straws on their sides); you will walk on a wooden plank that is 8” wide. I am 65, and able to do all of those things, but I should have brought hiking shoes rather than sneakers. The only communication was that it was an unpaved mountain road, and that closed shoes were required.
My friend also told me that it would be ฿1500 in cash. I was charged 1900. My friend could have made a mistake, as she did not accompany me.
The pick up was extremely late. I had rented an Airbnb and was told to be in the condominium lobby between 730 and 8 AM. My friend made a call for me and I made a call, and both times we were told 10 minutes. I was picked up at 8:38 AM. The drive is about 1.5 hours in a Toyota van. There will be other travelers. They stop at a rest area about half an hour before you arrive at Chang Chill. There are toilets and an ATM there as well as food you can purchase. I sensed they might get a financial reward for bringing the tourists. Our guide encouraged me to buy food and use ATM. I didn’t do it.
When you arrive at Chang Chill you hike 5 minutes to a gathering area. There are sheds with flush toilets, not pits. They tell you to use the shed toilets before you go on the hike to see the elephants. It seemed odd, since we had stopped at the rest area.
They have rescued elephants. The elephants were previously forced by keepers to perform in shows and give people rides. Some of the elephants bear wounds that show they were led by hooks and other things that made me sad.
After you hike into the woods to see the elephants, you hike, back out, and are given a good vegan lunch. That is the point at which they have you pay the money for your tour.
After lunch, you go partway down the road to an elephant viewing area, and the elephants are fed by their keepers. The elephants get very excited, because they are used to being fed on time. If I understand it correctly, they will live their lives in the sanctuary, because the past they endured means that they cannot be reintroduced to life without humans.
I’m a person who really likes to walk and be outdoors, and I enjoyed that. The other visitors who rode in my van were very nice to talk to. They were from the Netherlands, Belgium, and the UK. Almost all the visitors were in their 20s and 30s. I am lucky to be fit enough to have kept up with them, but that’s something other visitors should consider before booking. I also don’t think this would be appropriate for very young children, because it could be risky.

Came here with Intrepid group and was totally amazed on the work the staff have done. The elephants are very well looked after and look happy. A vegetarian meal was also provided.

Elephants are treated well so that's great! Organization and especially communication is worthless! Tour booked of 40 minutes, turn out to go to another location without notification thick 1.5 hours drive one way. No communication about clothing or footwear with the result that sneakers can be thrown away and my girlfriend's pants can go. Road to the park was too bad because of rain so walking at risk of own life. Also no communication about required fitness. My girlfriend is a lung patient. This while other groups were brought back and forth with pickups. Elephants were beautiful, which was worth it. Guide did his best and was very friendly. Organization and communication certainly for the price very poor! Maybe nice outside of the rainy season but during rainy season I wouldn't recommend it!

We booked for a half day (afternoon) thinking of going to see the sanctuary, instead they took us to the hill behind the house, with the animals followed and guided constantly to eat, drink, move. In short, very commercial and unethical, without even seeing the sanctuary. For €50 each (cash only, but find out after booking), it is not worth it at all!

Our group made the elephant food out of bananas, a bit of salt, tamarind, and various other things the elephants love to eat then we helped feed them. It was fantastic experience. We also watched them take mud baths, which was really fun. We would totally recommend this tour to anyone that loves elephants.

At Chang Chill, the elephants are number one.
You can watch the elephants from a distance. You must not touch, wash or feed them.
These elephants have been rescued from sanctuaries where they can be touched.
You really notice that there is love for the elephants and they are very well taken care of.
The elephants look happy too.
Also the surroundings are very nice.
Not to mention the lunch, which is delicious! There's something for everyone.
Think of (everything vegan) Pad Thai, rice, vegetables, fruit, etc.
There are also toilets.
All in all had a great day! Everything very well arranged.

It was just what we were looking for, an ethical place where there is no direct contact with elephants. After a short walk in search of the 4 females they have in the park, we saw them free and were able to take some photos. Already at the end of the visit they approach to eat in an area where they can be observed closely.
If you are looking to bathe or feed them, this is not your place. If you are looking for the best experience for both you and the animals, this is your place.

Chiang Chill attracted us for it's ethical sanctuary status. We wanted to see the elephants, but not intrude or cause undue stress. It was the right choice!
Niche, our guide for the day, and a driver picked us up in the morning at our hotel. We drove 1.5 hours into the jungle with 5 other elephant-curious travelers. Upon arrival at the sanctuary, we hiked to the main gathering area, were provided walking sticks and an opportunity to use the restrooms (they were quite nice) before we went out to find the elephants.
There are 4 elephants at Chiang Chill and each has their own mahout. Although we were told we were going on a hike to try to locate the elephants in their natural habitat, it did seem a bit like the mahouts knew how to keep their elephant near the path we would eventually trod. Even so, we did encounter all of the elephants in the jungle and were able to observe them from a short distance. It was incredible. For such large animals, they are quite nimble and hard to spot!
After observing for about 45 minutes, we walked back to the gathering area and were treated to a delicious, vegetarian Thai lunch. After lunch, we cut sugarcane for the elephants' midday snack. Once the sugarcane was cut and put in the feeders, it wasn't long before all 4 elephants made their way down to chow. We were able to sit in a covered area and observe from about 10 feet away. It is truly remarkable what they can accomplish with their trunks!
The sugarcane feast signaled the end of our half-day trip, so we hiked back to the waiting van and were driven the 1.5 hours back to the hotel. All in, it was 6-6.5 hour commitment that was totally worth it. We came away with an incredible experience and a feeling of peace knowing we weren't contributing to added suffering.

Chang Chill is a Truly ethical hands off sanctuary.
The day starts with searching in the forest looking for the elephants - yes they have mahouts with them (as one reviewer pointed out!) but these elephants are not and can never be wild! They have to be watched to ensure they don’t damage surrounding farmlands.
We learnt a lot about the elephants and the tour guide was very knowledgeable as well and it was refreshing to see that you were not able to touch, feed or bath the elephants. They encouraged the elephants to just simply be elephants and so any contact is limited to their mahouts only
They come down to the river at a certain time because they know they get bamboo but this is helpful for their diet as well as getting their rice balls with any supplements and medication in them.
It’s a completely hands off sanctuary and so you get to see elephants bonding, have dust baths, drinking from the river and foraging which is wonderful to see!
They are also highly regarded by the world animal protection. We loved our day here and would highly recommend them for an ethical observation only experience!
