Eastern Iran; less known and more authentic, even if I am Iranian, I was surprised to see many things that I had not seen before.
It is said that necessity is the mother of invention, we can see it squarely in Windmill, ancestors of wind turbines used to grind grains by strong and violent winds. No one knows where these mills come from because you can find them all over the world.
In Iran, the oldest records relating to this type of mill date back to the 10th century, but this dates back to ancient times (before Islam). The first windmills in Iran were built in the Sistan region (Sistan, the cradle of windmills; today shared between Iran and Afghanistan). Nowadays, the best preserved of Iran is in the city of Nashtifan south of khorasan-e Razavi, 18 km south of khaf (120 days of Sistan wind it works well): in Nashtifa, it exists today 'about 33 mills dating back to the Safavid era and some of them are still in operation. When I was there, some of these windmills were not in good condition, but I was told that they were under repair and that the site was closed in order to analyze the basement where the grain was ground.

these windmills are intact, they are located in a vast site. They are one of the largest collections of clay, and wood structures also the oldest collections of the world's remnants of pre-Islamic history in IRAN.Considering regional climate, windmills had a important roll in incomes of the old residents of this city. upper of this site we saw an old cemetery as well.
you can stay in the old house hostel near this place.(Pour yaghoub House). their services and their local foods (like "Eshkene Bene" & "Dizi") are so good.

I was quite surprised to find out that Nashtifan Windmills are not even mentioned in any guide book. I spent a whole day at the site and really enjoy it! There is a great Ecolodge right in front of the Winmills where the friendly owner will cook great home made veggie dishes for you! Simply awesome! You can easily reach Nashtifan from Mashhad or by just getting off the Mashhad bounded bus at Torbat-e Hedariyeh from where a Savaris can teke you to Khaf and then on to Nashtfan.

In the small village of Nashtifan, Iran, some of the oldest windmills in the world, with what may be the earliest windmill design in the world, still spin. These amazing windmills are among the oldest in the world. These windmills have withstood winds of up to 74 miles an hour. With the design thought to have been created in eastern Persia between 500-900 A.D., they have been in use for several centuries.
Made of natural clay, straw, and wood, the windmills have been milling grain for flour for an estimated 1000 years. The vertical axis design is probably similar to the windmills that were invented by the Persians around 500-900 A.D. The design that slowly spread through the world and which was later adapted by the Dutch and others.
Nashtifan’s original name was Nish Toofan, meaning ‘storm’s sting,’ a reference to the strong winds that blow through the area.

Nashtifan is a town located in the southern parts of Khorasan Razavi province, in Iran, 20 kilometers away from Khaf and 30 kilometers away from the border with Afghanistan. One of the main characteristics of the area is the strong winds (120 Day Wind of Sistan) that blow across it, causing it to initially be called Nish Toofan or “storm’s sting”. As a result of the natural elements in the area, windmills have been part of the region’s industrial creativity and have been used throughout many centuries.
There are approximately 30 of windmills scattered through the area and can reach heights of 15-20 meters. The windmills are believed to have been erected during the Safavid dynasty and are generally constructed out of clay, straw and wood.
In 2002 the windmills of Nashtifan were registered as a national heritage site by Iran’s Cultural Heritage Department.
