The Tomales Point trail from beginning to end is 9.5 miles. We were lucky and did it during an overcast day. We saw two bachelor herds, along with regular herds. There is no shade so if you do this during a sunny day make sure to bring enough water.

Drove out to the end of the road to see a few tule elk. More importantly, we saw a mountain lion crossing a meadow and a winter-coated coyote hunting rodents. Very exciting. Visited McClure's Beach—a well-marked trail to a fairly empty beach. Trails was steep in parts and would be difficult in rain.

Drive north out to Pierce Point for an other-worldly experience of vast rolling tundra with lots of game (dear, elk, Bob cat, coyote, and lots of cows) Visit Peirce Ranch that was established by the Spanish in 1820 in this remote location with their own school, store, black smith shop, seamstress, and church. Now imagine living at this desolate station with limited access to the outside world.

We drove out to Tomales Bay point after going to the lighthouse and the two points down that way. We got lucky and saw two small herds of elk: all females, a group of 10 and group of 8. We also saw several small herds of deer.
The scenery is really nice but we didn’t have time to do this hike because we had been walking and exploring all day by the time we got to this area.
There are several placards explaining the area that were interesting.
Would definitely recommend this hike if we had more time from what I saw and read,

We traveled with 3 small kids - only made it about 2 miles into the hike. But it was glorious! A *very* foggy morning. Saw two small groupings of elk on the drive in, and saw another at the 2 mile mark before we turned around. Even with thick fog, it was a really beautiful experience. We were lucky enough to run into a ranger we could bombard with questions.
We arrived on a Friday about 8:15 am and were the only group there. By the time we left (11:30ish) there were maybe 2-3 parking spots left.

I’ve always enjoyed this hike when wanting to talk with a friend or enjoy the Elks. It truly is a lovely long flat hike. That most anyone can enjoy.

The Tule Elk Reserve is located on a long peninsula surrounded by Tomales Bay to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the west. The trail to the north takes the high ground providing excellent views in all directions. Herds of elk chill a hundred yards or so off the side of the trail. We also saw a coyote and sea birds. Absolutely gorgeous experience on a clear, sunny fall day. Yep, fall is probably the best time to come as the fog and chill common in other months is frequently absent. The sad part is that the Parks service is planning on slaughtering the Elk to extend dairy farming in the park. See these magnificent creatures while you still can.

It's a long drive to the trailhead, but totally worth it. This is the Tomales Point Trail, where a substantial herd of elk are maintained, and which you can see fairly close up. In the spring, it's fun to see the males collect their harem, and bugle off other male challengers. Most of the time, you get a windy day, but, when it's not, it is perfect. Moderate hiking with about 8 miles round trip all the way to the tippy point overlooking Tomales Bay and Dillon Beach. Worth it.

Last year I spent a few unforgettable hours walking and picnicking in this unique place by the Pacific. I loved the freshness of the air and the long vistas of open land. The highlight of the day was enjoying the marvelous sight of magnificent and rare Tule Elk roaming the grasslands.
Recently, on a visit to Point Reyes Station, a sweet little town not far from the Tule Elk, I was shocked to learn that the National Park Service has proposed a plan that involves killing Tule Elk and expanding dairy farms leased in the park.
I learned the dairy companies were paid millions for the land when National Seashore was established in the 60s. Today taxpayers subsidize the ranchers, who enjoy below market leases and grazing fees.
Looks like the for-profit, privately-owned dairy farms are going to take ascendency over the wild animas and natural environment in this National Seashore.
Visit this magical place to enjoy the Tule Elk and all the other wild creatures and land in the park before it's too late.

Why would trip advisor give wrong directions? Followed the directions and it took us to a trailhead that went to tomales bay . No elk just a few vultures.

I'm arranging my first trip to the USA and I'd like to visit the Elk Preserve. How long does the car journey take? And the trekkiing part? Is it an easy walk? Do you think half a day is enough to visit te preserve?
