Honestly, there is no need for pre-booking a ticket, unless you have a tight travel schedule. Also, the train do get lesser crowd nearer to Kaohsuing station and hence, if you are travelling from Taipei to Kaohsuing and dont mind the little standing time, you can try the free seating option.

Yes Amex is taken at the HSR Ticket Counter. I did not have any luck using Amex in 7-11 or Family Mart
