My fiancée and I attended Ivy’s cooking class during a trip to Taiwan in 2018. Ivy had a challenge ahead of her: a vegetarian matched with an omnivore who loathes eggplant. Nevertheless, Ivy gave us an amazing experience! The food she taught us to make was delicious, her company delightful (though Ivy no doubt thinks there is something wrong with South Australians after I told her about pie floaters).

We still talk about her class four years later; we still make every recipe she taught us. After the session, we rushed out to buy Taiwan-shaped baking moulds for our pineapple cakes, which we still keep in our third drawer. I can’t recommend Ivy’s classes highly enough – you won’t regret a minute of one!

Ivy is an absolute treasure! Not only did we learn how to shop for and cook several Taiwanese dishes that were easy to make and delicious to eat, she taught us about the best way to prepare, serve, and drink fine tea (which was excellent!); the history and evolution of many Taiwan dishes based on the mix of different cultures here over time; and many other fun and fascinating stories. And best of all is her vibrant and warm personality. We didn't feel like customers, we felt like honored guests welcomed into her home. I can't recommend this experience enough, it is a must do in Taiwan!

Gosh this is such a delayed review. We visited Ivy in August 2019 from Australia before the pandemic and we just couldn’t forget her even after all this time. We loved every moment of the experience.
We were welcomed with a lesson in tea that we took with us to Jiufen, and made us appreciate what good tea was. We got to know delicious dishes including Dan Dan noodles (which we struggle to recreate after all this time!), pork bao and pineapple cakes and had so much fun making them in the space of one morning. But we also got to know Ivy and her love of sharing her knowledge as well.

If it weren’t for the pandemic we’d have been back again. We also did a cooking class in Japan and it just wasn’t the same compared to Ivy’s gracious hospitality. Thank you Ivy! And apologies for the delay in reviewing.

Ivy responded really quickly to my initial enquiry via email and our class for 3 was soon confirmed. We really looked forward to it as we love Taiwanese dishes and Ivy did not disappoint - we had a really special afternoon in her lovely comfortable home.
We started with the traditional tea ceremony and Ivy introduced us to a wild Oolong Taiwanese tea. It was really good and we had many refills as Ivy got to to know us and explored what we wanted out of our cookery class.and how much we already knew about Taiwanese cooking.
After a clear explanation of how the cookery lesson would work we put on our aprons and started cooking! We had clear instructions to take home so did not need to take notes unless we wanted to.
We chose the popular tradition menu of beef noodle soup, Xiao Long Bao and pineapple cake because we love eating them!
Ivy clearly explained and demonstrated all the different techniques, and then let us be hands on. She gave us loads of tips and also added so much interesting detail about Taiwanese food, culture and history that the dishes really came alive! She was endlessly patient and encouraging and we surprised ourselves with what we achieved as some of the techniques/skills were quite challenging! We sat down to eat what we had helped cook and it was so delicious and professional looking. The pineapple cakes were as good as any we had ever tasted and we now knew the secrets to get the shape and filling just right! What we could not eat Ivy wrapped up for us to take away with the pineapple cakes in special boxes. The afternoon had just flown by and not only had we learnt how to cook 3 wonderful dishes, but we had had such fun! Ivy made sure we had lots of photos/videos to refer back to- taking some herself and sending them to us.
We definitely hope to return to have another lesson on our next visit. Thank you so much Ivy. 😊

A fun and hassle-free experience from start to finish. Ivy is very bubbly and friendly and made the learning experience very fun. When we first got through the door, we sat down for some great oolong tea and talked about the map on her wall which pinpoints the place of origin of all her previous students, testimony to her ability to teach to people from all different walks of life and levels of ability.

My friend had already arranged with Ivy that we would learn three dishes: Xiaolongbao dumplings (Taiwanese style), Kung Pao chicken and pineapple cakes. As well as giving us quick and interesting insights into the development history of the three dishes, she made out a take-home worksheet for us, so that we didn't have to take any notes or worry about remembering the process. I was really pleased that Ivy decided that we should learn how to make every part of the meal from scratch, and structured the lesson in a way that made this possible (she'd pre-prepared certain items to speed the process along, like we kneaded the dough, but as it has to sit for three hours, she had prepared another dough earlier in the day). The cooking experience was made fun with little games like guess the ingredients and a challenge to replicate her sauce. After preparing the three dishes, which were streamlined so that they all came out at the same time, we sat down for a nice chat and some food with Ivy.

It was an enjoyable experience from start to finish and accessible for all levels of ability (even a beginner like me). Somehow she also managed to get some great pics of us too, while handling all the timings for the dishes!

When Ivy originally starting teaching cooking classes, she was teaching her foreign neighbors interested in learning more about Taiwanese cuisine. And that's exactly how she makes you feel, like her neighbor. She's an incredibly warm host who will impart invaluable knowledge about shopping at the market and cooking delicious Taiwanese cuisine. I hope to one day go back and learn more dishes! I highly recommend you take a class with Ivy, she's wonderful!!

A fantastic cooking class experience ! Ivy is a magician and a wonderful guide through taiwanese wonders.

More than a cooking class, it was a real cultural discovery. Very pratical, I felt in love with Ivy's passion about food, nature and culture.
For the planet lovers, this is the class you need to attend. She was able to explain everything about local fruit, veggies and cooking traditions. She has adapted all the meals to be vegan and it was delicious.

I have spent a day in a cooking paradise with a great mentor.

It was really a great experience cooking the food with Ivy. We loved everything, including Oolong tea, recipes with wide variety of choice, the way the cooking class was organised and especially the personality and hospitality of the host.

My fiance and I have done many cooking classes around the world; however this was the first where it was just a private cooking class with an equal cost associated with it.

We opted for the market tour and cooking class option (with an additional cost for the market tour naturally). Ivy took us around the market, introducing and explaining some key ingredients the Taiwanese use for their dishes, and what grows locally (which is a surprising amount)!

After the market tour (which was very insightful and enjoyable), we headed to her apartment which was a short 5-10 minute walk away.

Ivy started off by providing us with some Tea (with the traditional Taiwanese method) and chatted with us some more about Taiwan and where we had already been. Once we finished the tea, she reviewed the menu (based on the items we wanted to cook) and we started preparing!

We chose to make the Xiao Long Bao, Zhong Zi and Sweet and Sour Pork.
Ivy took the time to explain all the processes for us - although also referenced in the recipe copy she provided for us. It was very kind of her to have prepared some of the ingredients beforehand as they sometimes took time to 'prepare' before putting together. However she let us be very hands-on, which was definitely appreciated as that is the fun part about cooking classes.

Overall it was definitely a highlight to our trip in Taipei, and we would definitely recommend this to anyone who is looking to learn and cook Taiwanese foods.
Thank you for the great experience Ivy! When we come back to Taipei, we would love to do another class with some different recipes! <3
