In January 2020 my wife and I included a 6 night Wendy Wu private tour of Taiwan as part of our 18 day Asian trip we arranged to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary.
On day one of the tour, on the way to Taroko National Park from Taipei, we made a stop for lunch at Nanfang’ao Fishing Port in Su’ao Township, located in the south eastern corner of Yilan County on the north eastern coast of Taiwan and 75 km drive from Taipei.
As well as being a busy fishing port, Nanfang'ao is home to the Nantian Temple dedicated to Matsu (Mazu), goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors.
The Nantian Temple is a three story building. A climb up the steps to the top balcony of the temple is well worth the effort because from the top you get a magnificent vista of the fishing port in all its splendour. The temple roof adorned with dragon figures is so ornate and offers a wonderful foreground to the excellent view of the village and the harbour from this vantage point.
There is a feature statue of the Matsu on each of the three floors of the Temple. There is a statue of Matsu with a human face, a black –faced statue of Matsu made of jade and a gold Matsu statue made from 200 kilograms of gold. In addition to these three main statues there are also five Matsu statues in the Temple that originated from Meishou in mainland China. The Temple is beautifully presented and elaborately decorated.
We were fortunate that there were not many other people visiting the Temple during our visit there. This enabled us to take a closer look at the Temple's many enduring features.
We enjoyed a great seafood lunch in an unpretentious restaurant in one of the main streets, one of many that can be found in the village.
The tour of the Nantian Temple was an added bonus and was a pleasing and moving experience. In our view it is an attraction not to be missed if travellers happen to plan to visit or just happen to stumble upon Nanfang’ao Fishing Port in their travels.

這是一間富具歷史色彩的廟宇，和大甲鎮瀾宮的金身媽祖有異曲同工之妙。廟前的漁港訴語人們說著漁民對宗教的信仰與熱忱，增添了廟宇的神秘色彩。

一樓安放著五尊渡海前來的湄洲媽祖，二樓安座的是邀請花蓮雕石大師劉萬枝與葉雙寶共同創作、以罕見的巨型綠玉雕琢而成的玉媽祖，坐鎮三樓的是全世界最大的一尊純金媽祖神像(重達200公斤)

南方澳の漁港にある廟で海の安全を祈願するために建てられています。三種類の馬祖があり、一階から普通、二階が翡翠、三階が黄金となっていてそれぞれ叶えてくれるお願いが分かれています。トイレは綺麗ですがちょっと臭いです。

This is the Machu temple for the Sea Goddess. The temple is full beautiful staues in gold, jade, and other precious stones. So spectacular since there are many statues in the different floors of the temple. At the top floor, one can see a view of Yilan. The roof of the temple is intricately carved, very colorful.

南天宮位於南方澳漁港旁，一直以來，香火鼎盛，除了一樓主殿供奉著木雕媽祖神像外，二樓、三樓則分別供奉整身玉刻媽祖神像及整身純金媽祖神像，庇佑前來進香的善男信女，是全台灣極為特殊的媽祖廟。

著名的金媽祖，位於3樓，當時信眾捐募基金，以8千萬元採購203.8公斤純金，打造6尺3寸高的金媽祖神像，2樓為玉石媽祖，在地非常靈驗的廟宇，拜拜祈求平安後，可到附近有名的魚丸店或海產餐廳用餐，並逛逛海產乾貨店當伴手禮。
