My husband and I wanted to gift his parents a roundtrip plane fare and tour of Taiwan.
Some background: My father-in-law spent several years in Taiwan as part of his military service many decades ago. Many strong memories were formed there! The country has changed greatly since then. My mother-in-law has listened to his stories about Taiwan for 40 years, but had never been there herself. I am Taiwanese-American, and wanted to give them both a special experience that really showcased everything I am proud of about my home country.
My in-laws are a couple in their late 60s/early 70s, and physical limitations applied. International travel is no longer in their repertoire. There would need to be limited walking, frequent reprieve from the unrelenting heat/humidity in the time of year we chose, time allotted for a midday nap (or two :)), limited time spent in cramped sitting spaces - basically, a very flexible itinerary. Realistically, there was just no way an on-off tour bus would be pleasant for them. Plus, my in-laws are beautiful and loving people with a lot of thoughts to share, conversation to make, and imaginations deserving of an intimate, organic experience with a guide they could envision as a personal friend.
For all the above reasons, I knew a ‘herded’, cookie-cutter experience was not for them. (Nothing at all against the bus or smaller-group tours, which are undeniably more economical. I implore you first to reach out to Kai and Ario with your stated budget and see what they can do for you. If you do choose to go the non-private tour route, ensure you go with solid reputation companies that steer clear of tourist traps or pre-ordained shopping ‘experiences’ where they get a commission for the money you spend.)
I knew my search would start and end on TripAdvisor. I reached out to the top 5 or 6 companies that had hundreds of five star reviews. I told them about my in-laws. Slowly, their responses began trickling back - some taking several days to respond - which made communication agonizing! Most of them immediately proposed what looked like a cookie-cutter itinerary, and the activities/timeline proposed, as well as their responses, did not acknowledge my in-laws' need for flexibility. Another thing I did not like about these hugely successful custom-tour companies was you would not find out who your tour guide was basically until they picked you up at the airport. Arranging the itinerary is only a small part of the process; whether your guide is any good can make or break the whole experience! What good are reviews if you they are all for different tour guides, and you don’t know which one you’re getting?
Discouraged, I went back to TripAdvisor, and decided to take a look at the lesser reviewed companies. TaiwanPockets, with less than 20 reviews at the time, but a perfect 5-star average, caught my eye. Their reviews made it clear that all tours were run by either Kai or Ario, two halves of a married couple. EVERY SINGLE review was a glowing report of how wonderful of people Kai and Ario are, and what an amazing time was had by all on the tour (whether single-day or multi-day).
When Kai responded to my email within several hours, with a personalized message asking for more information about my in-laws, I knew I had struck gold. He listened to everything I said about my in-laws, made proposals, listened patiently to my proposals, made ‘draft itineraries’, asked for my input, made changes - and together, over an email chain of 48 messages (because of my constant questions…), they made the PERFECT itinerary for my in-laws… seriously, it was beautiful. We also decided that Kai and Ario would both go along, so that if my father-in-law needed to rest or hang back, one party could continue to sightsee with him in the private air-conditioned van, or take him back to the hotel, while the other party took my more active mother-in-law on something she wanted to do.
I have to note that because I am Taiwanese and already had many ideas of what I wanted the tour to consist of, Kai and Ario had to deal with incorporating a TON of my ideas (which were all over the place), and they were exceedingly gracious. I never felt like they were just 'being patient’ or ‘hearing me out’. They truly listened to me and tried to help me realize a vision - even folding in specifics such as a special hotel I wanted my in-laws to experience, and a ride on Taiwan’s famous high-speed rail! That being said, if you have no idea what you want out of a Taiwan tour, and just want someone to do all the thinking for you - tell Kai and Ario about your preferences, activity level, and let them get to know your personality a bit - and then take my word that you can FULLY ENTRUST them with creating the perfect Taiwan experience for you.
Kai and Ario even skyped with me to get some finer details worked out, and taught my in-laws how to set up WeChat, so that they could get to know each other in the weeks leading up to the tour. By the time my in-laws met Kai and Ario in person, it was like they already partially knew each other. I can’t emphasize enough how you cannot get an experience like this with the bigger-box custom tour companies.
As for the tour itself, well, it went even more amazingly than I could have ever dreamed. Over 10 full days, my in-laws made fast friends with Kai and Ario - like truly became friends! They are still frequently in touch over a year later, sending each other messages on facebook and even small ‘saw this and thought of you’ gifts in the mail. My in-laws actually see them as a second set of children… lol. The understated value, but crowning detail, of their entire flawless tour of Taiwan - was actually the opportunity to get to know, talk with, dine with, and have an immense amount of fun with two quintessentially Taiwanese people… that fact alone was as worthwhile as the tour itself.
My in-laws saw so much of Taiwan, got to try classic Taiwanese cuisine from all over the island, see landmarks, temples, natural vistas, night markets, have tons of spontaneous and genuine interactions with locals - with everything enriched to phenomenal depths by Kai and Ario’s insider commentary, in perfect English. Kai and Ario were expert travel partners with seamless navigation of every logistical aspect of hitting the must-sees, so my in-laws didn't have to personally fight the frenetic aspects of being a tourist. They also went off the touristy circuit many times, to experience Kai and Ario’s personal favorite sights and/or places to eat. They never felt rushed, burdensome, nickel-dimed, not anything even close. They really felt like they were touring the country with old friends. They could not stop talking about how every aspect of their tour was customized. If they felt tired on one day, the plan was reworked with hardly a mention. If they saw a restaurant they wanted to try, they would go. If they were in the mood for dumplings yet again - then dumplings it was!
Kai and Ario's hotel/B&B selections were on-point. The lodging was always thoughtfully selected, based on location, prior experience, and reviews. Kai and Ario discussed the lodging expense with us beforehand, to see how much luxury and/or variation we desired. They proceeded to select and pre-reserve all of the lodging, finding the best bang-for-buck, and factor it into the total price of the tour, without upcharging us for any of it. If you are on a very strict budget, going with economy lodging would be a great way to make a private tour a reality! Or, if you want the utmost luxury, Kai and Ario know where to find it - and which tourist traps to avoid.
On top of everything, the amenities provided were amazing - the van was new, safe, spacious, air conditioned, with wifi. Kai and Ario’s driving was always meticulous and safe. Airport pickup was punctual with a personalized sign. If raining, there were umbrellas. There was always bottled water provided. My in-laws, if they were not up for walking, were always dropped off at the most convenient point, and then when done, were always picked up curbside (so they never had to worry about finding or walking to the parking). Kai and Ario even made sure to take tons of photos for my in-laws, since they were having so much fun that they might have occasionally forgotten to take some photos themselves! Most importantly, Kai and Ario treated them with the genuine respect, hospitality, and warmth that the Taiwanese are so famous for.
Payment was easy with a few options. Kai and Ario were extremely transparent about which activities were free versus lower cost versus higher cost, as well as what constituted their personal guiding fee. This leads me to recommend that people of ALL budgets reach out to Kai and Ario - I am sure, within reason, you can design an itinerary that suits you. Of course, a private, personalized tour will always be quite a bit more than a bus tour; Kai and Ario deserve every bit of that premium for the experience of a lifetime that they provide. I felt that the total amount we ended up paying was completely fair, in exchange for what I consider a priceless experience. Again, just reach out to them, and I know Kai and Ario will go out of their way to see what they can make work with your budget.
If you haven’t noticed from this review, I just can’t say enough wonderful things about Kai and Ario. I think this couple exudes an energy and love for Taiwan, and life in general, that is infectious. At the end of the tour, my husband and I (who are around Kai and Ario’s age - late 20s/30s) actually met up with them for some dinner and beers to thank them for taking such good care of my in-laws, and for representing Taiwan so well. What can I say, except that Kai and Ario are just cool, laidback people. They are multidimensional, thoughtful, and great conversationalists. I can see why my in-laws felt nothing but enthusiasm after spending 10 full days with them. They are a ton of fun and if we lived close by, I could see us hanging out often as friends. I could tell just by being around them, plus seeing how much my in-laws loved them, and our extensive communications before the tour, that they are both standup people defined by their integrity.
Though this review is about how Kai and Ario treated my in-laws, I can say with confidence that they would not only be wonderful travel companions/tour guides for the retiree, but also for families, middle-age explorers, and for young world travelers. Kai and Ario are also accomplished world travelers/backpackers themselves, as well as outdoor enthusiasts. They have something to offer everyone. If my husband and I ever required another Taiwan tour of any length for ourselves or loved ones, Kai and Ario would be the ONLY option, without a doubt.
Everything about my experience with Kai and Ario indicated that TaiwanPockets is a startup company propelled by the absolute force of two young, hardworking, smart, fresh faces on the tourism scene who deeply care about bringing their integrity, love for Taiwan, and vision of TRULY curated experiences, to an industry that seems to fall slightly short.
My husband and I are still trying to convince our in-laws to take a second international trip in the near future. I honestly think they’d be far more easily persuaded if we managed to convince Kai and Ario to meet up with them at my in-laws’ next country of choice, and tour them around there - even if it would be Kai and Ario’s first time in that country also... Kai and Ario are just THAT good :) (Of course, this is just fantasizing.. we haven’t actually asked them about this yet!)
This review is long overdue. Sorry it was so long! I had a lot to say. :) Thanks Kai and Ario for giving my in-laws an experience that they still cannot stop talking about to this day.

Having contacted Kai at Taiwan Pockets well ahead of our cruise, in January 2018, & informing him that we would be calling at Keelung, the port for Taipei, on 4th he was very helpful accommodating us & our fellow guests from our first communication. Kai made the entire booking process simple & tailored the tour to our requests.
We had party of 19 adults join us for a superb tour in Taipei guided by Kai and Ariel who managed us as 2 smaller groups to ensure we all got the best possible experience.
Kai dealt with any issues that arouse & always expedited our visits to the attractions with great organisation & pre-ordering of tickets where possible.
Our tour proceeded at a practical pace, yet we never felt rushed, with regular clean rest room stops allowed for, which everyone appreciated.
We would not hesitate to recommend Kai & Ariel, who provide an excellent service & are true ambassadors for customer service and satisfaction.

Dear Neil,
Thank you! :) It was really fun chatting with you all about the history of Taiwan and what you had remembered from your past trip to Taiwan as a military personnel in the 1960s.
I'm glad that some memories were relived, but most importantly, being that you had enjoyed yourself on this trip with your Wife.
Do visit us again sometime soon and we would be more than happy to host you again.
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

Contact Kai at Taiwan Pockets early in 2017 as our cruise would be calling at Keelung (Port for Taipei) on 4th Jan 2018 and he was very responsive from the outset offering a variety of options for our group.
We had group of 19 fellow cruisers join us for a superb day of touring in Taipei expertly led by Kai and Ariel who managed us as 2 smaller groups to ensure we all got the best possible experience.
Even with the challenges which the day presented again we need not have worried as Kai just dealt with them. Nothing was an issue.
The pace was great and not at all rushed. And there was good thought given to regular appropriately clean rest room facilities access......this was appreciated by the group.
Would not hesitate to recommend this dynamic duo who deserve to thrive and are true ambassadors for customer service and satisfaction.
Communication was outstanding from start to finish.

Dear Pamela,
It was a nice day out with everyone on the cruise role call and I'm glad that our planning turned out well for everyone.
We were very happy to hear that the small details were picked up by all of you and this is the best compliment that we could have :)
Do let us know if you have a chance to visit Taiwan on a longer trip and we can take a nice trip along the Eastern Coast to taste more food options as well!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

We had a lovely time on the Jiufen and Shifen day tour with Kai and Ario. The tour was very informative and laid back. We had older people in our party and the pacing of the tour was great for them. They weren't too tired afterwards, and they enjoyed the tour very much :)
The weather was beautiful on the day of our tour. It was sunny but not too hot. Both Kai and Ario were saying that our timing was perfect as it had been raining the last few weeks before our trip.
We had a lot of fun exploring Jiufen (and trying out different kinds of yummy food! :) It indeed gives the "Spirited Away" feel/vibe (where it served as an inspiration). The Golden Waterfalls and Shifen Waterfalls were both picturesque. You can take photos from all angles. The releasing of sky lantern from the Shifen railway was also an experience definitely worth a try.
We highly recommend Taiwan Pockets <3 Kai and Ario are warm and friendly, and very knowledgeable. The tour arrangements was very smooth -- from when I made the tour inquiry to giving us tips after the tour has finished.
Thanks again Kai and Ario for showing us a wonderful time (and for the tips too!) :)

Dear Deng,
This is all that we need to hear from you :) Everyone having a great time regardless of their age is what we want to happen, and we are happy it did.
The weather played a big role with it being really chilly without it being too cold with the Sun so it definitely made Jiufen a much more pleasant place to visit.
We would be very if you have another chance to visit Taiwan again and we would give you a best second impression of Taiwan on your next visit!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

Our paths crossed recently with Kai and Ariel from Taiwan Pockets Day Tours via Trip Advisor while looking for Private Tour English speaking guides in Taipei. The plan was to head to Jiufen and Shifen, two ex-mining towns now famous tourist spots outside of Taipei.
Kai and Ariel arrived a few minutes ahead of schedule on the day of our trip. They explained the schedule for the day which took into account our feedback and ensured we maximised our time at Jiufen and Shifen. Both were well versed with the background of the towns and took care to explain the different interesting spots over the course of the day, pointed out local street foods we came across and provided suggestions on what we should try. The tour had a lunch stop between the two towns at a local Taiwanese eatery or “chu char” places for Malaysians and Singaporeans reading this review.
Jiufen is perched on top of a hill and is covered with fascinating lanes to explore (wear good walking shoes). These were typically packed with shops selling craft, food, tea and souvenirs while street food stalls lined the pathways. Of all the food we sampled, my favourite was the ice cream Taiwanese spring roll with its unique combination of artisan ice cream, shaved peanut brittle and coriander. This is a definite must try! For awesome photo backdrops, head to the pretty teahouses at the tip of Jiufen.
Shifen is where one of the picturesque waterfalls of Taiwan can be found and the place I associate with the famous Taiwanese wishing lanterns. The fun is to release your wishing lantern and see if fly up to the sky. This all takes place on a railroad track near a station which is still in use with trains coming through every hour.
Kai and Ariel related to our family of five with young adults well and we appreciated their advice on what to do and where to go around Taipei during travel times in the tour van. Kai did the driving while Ariel accompanied us on the walking bits of the tour. Both took good care of us and we had a really memorable day.
Would I use Taiwan Pockets again? Yes definitely and I would book early. I tried to arrange a second tour before arriving in Taipei with Kai but Taiwan Pockets was already booked. However, Kai went out of his way to try and find someone else for us. Taiwan Pockets can also provide airport transfers but again, contact them ahead. Prices are reasonable and you certainly get value for money.

Dear Diana,
We were pleasantly surprised that you had so much appetite for all that we have recommended and all the food and snacks turned out on the right side of your palette :)
However, we would have hoped that we could host you for the 2nd part of your trip at Hualien but our schedule didn't allow us to.
In any case, I certainly hope that you could stop by Taiwan again if you are travelling from New Zealand to Penang enroute to any North Asian countries and we will be happy to see you again!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

We booked the Jiufen and Shifen tour only the day before our arrival in Taipei. Kai was incredibly responsive, to a degree which sets him apart from many tour guide companies. He picked us up at the airport for the approximate cost of a taxi, assisted us to get a SIM card for our phone (which is incredibly cheap here) before we left the airport and drove us to our hotel, even though our tour with him was scheduled for two days later.
Our tour was fantastic, despite the rain. Kai picked us up at the hotel very punctually and made sure we were comfortable, even bringing his van rather than the smaller car as he felt this would be more comfortable for my 6'4" husband. We had a great time touring and snacking, with the lunch we had at a very local restaurant definitely the highlight of the entire trip for me. My favorite lunch item, was something that I did not even want to taste initially! So definitely try everything!
Kai followed up as promised the next day with some recommendations for a restaurant to try and shopping areas for us to explore.
All in all, a great time! Highly recommend!!!

Dear Paula,
You're most welcomed! :)
It was a great time travelling with yourself and your husband and lovely daughter. I'm glad you took up my recommendation and tried the pork blood cake which I have to admit doesn't sound appetising but the taste is a whole lot different from its name.
I would be more than happy to host you around should you have a chance to visit us again!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

Highly recommended private tour.
Kai Xiang and Ario are very professional and engaging. They are flexible and pay attention to the details.
We were traveling with our elderly parents. They took extra care to ensure the schedule were not too hectic and adjusted the venues to minimize outdoor activities at the hottest and humid part (35 to 38 degree last week) of the day.
They even remember my father is a vegetarian and make prior arrangements with the B&B. So thoughtful!
Thanks for making our revisit to Taipei a memorable one! Still missing the lantern experience in Shi Feng.

Dear Ivey & Casey,
We are so happy and glad to hear that yourself and your parents have enjoyed the trip with us although the weather wasn't too kind to us :)
I think the highlight of the trip probably have to be the cold springs with the kiln-roasted chicken which was a good break away from the hot weather. It was an impromptu change to our original lineup for the trip but I'm glad that it turned out well.
There can never be enough trips to Taiwan so we hope to host you around again should you have a a chance to come back and visit us!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

Thank you to Kai and Ario for treating my husband and me to an excellent trip to Taipei. Kai picked us up at the airport and he and Ario treated us to breakfast and lunch, along with seeing all the sites of Taipei, then took us to the night market near his house for fun and even more food, before heading back to the airport. They were the BEST guides, I cannot say enough nice and wonderful things about them. We have traveled all over the world and this was honestly one of the best tour days we have ever had. Don't hesitate to hire them! They really are superb.

Dear Michelle,
It was a short 24 hours that we had but I'm very happy to hear that you have enjoyed the day with us even though you flew in really early in the morning at 4 AM.
The night market was an eye opener and it was fun to see yourself and your husband enjoying the prawn fishing as well as all the carnival games and the clear broth beef soup!
Do let us know the next time you are around in Taiwan and we would be more than happy to host you around again!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

My family of three spent a full day touring the Northern Coast of Taiwan (the coastline, Yehliu Geo Park, Shifen and Jiufen) with Kai and it was absolutely awesome! Pre-planning the booking was always responded promptly and everything was explained in detail. With Kai's expertise, we got to see Taiwan's laid back side. The walk to grab different desserts/sweets in Jiufen was an adventure in itself and not to be missed. His recommended snack stops were spot on - we did not eat anything we did not like along our "snack run" and YES including the famous stinky tofu. He took us to a tea house to experience a traditional Taiwanese tea service which without him, we would have not done. This is a must do experience as well. After all the snacking, we stopped by at a local noddle house which served the best Beef Noodle Soup we ever tasted - if you are on this tour please leave time and room to visit this noodle house (it is a hole in the wall , but believe me - looks can be deceiving and you know the place is good when it is packed by locals)! The time spent to release the sky lantern was magical and made special since he took us to a lantern operator who not only helped set up to release the lantern, but took the time to take photos and video for us. His expertise in this area of Taiwan is very useful for tourist like us. His english is good, he is polite, a safe driver and prompt (he provided airport pick up and drop of for us as well). He provides information about the sites you are passing by, knowleagable and passionate about sharing Taiwan's culture to foreigners like us! I highly recommend Kai and Taiwan Pockets for your touring needs in Taiwan! PS - Congratulations on the TripAdvisor award! It is well deserved!

Dear Jr,
I'm so glad that all of you enjoyed the beef noodles as I was slightly worried that you would be put off by the shop being not a restaurant. I guess that the empty bowls would speak for itself :)
Also, I certainly hope that you have more time with us in Taiwan the next time so that I could show you around the beautiful Eastern Coast of Taiwan.
Thanks and I certainly hope to see you in Taiwan soon!
Cheers,
Kai

From breathtaking waterfalls and hilltop temples to time honored tea ceremonies, Taiwan has so much to offer beyond the hustle and bustle of Taipei.
After doing a ton of research, we decided to book a day trip with Taiwan Pocket Tours for a few reasons:
-Flexible tour options catered to our interests
-Quick and responsive communication via email
-Reasonable prices
At the end of our tour, the guides / owners (a cute couple), dropped us off at our hotel. We returned to our room happy and exhausted.
Bottom line, if you're interested in seeing the area around Taipei, and you want a private, flexible, reasonably priced tour, Taiwan Pockets is a great option.

Dear Jen,
Thanks for remembering to put in a review for us! :)
We are so happy to hear that yourself and Zev have enjoyed the trip with us although you had such a short time that you could have to tour around Taiwan.
Hopefully the next time you have a chance to return to Taiwan for more lessons, we will be able to host you around again!
Cheers,
Kai & Ario

Hi,
I am researching for a trip to Vietnam (Spring 2019),via Taipei. On TripAdvisor I came across some very interesting reviews. I tried to obtain more info. from "Taiwan Pockets Day Tours",but all their sites are closed down.Facebook (domain has expired). "taiwanpockets" (this site can't be reached/website expired ). Are they out of business? How did travelers communicate with them, when they did their research and booking ? We are looking for a reliable travel agency, that will pick us up from an airport hotel for 2 day tours ( Taipei city and then Jiufen and Shifen ).Any recommendation ? Cheers !

Hi do u have private tour to jiufen/shifen?
เขียนเมื่อ 5 มิถุนายน 2018
There is no set itinerary. Right? The reviews seem to point to the things that I like to see, such as tea picking and tasting, the lantern thing seeing old town charm of Taiwan. It will be just me and my daughter (young adult).
And how do you pay? Do you book it through Trip Advisor?

If you need more information, feel free to send us an email which you would be able to do so through our website as well.
Looking forward to hearing from you!
