The fountain is a good starting point from which to explore the ancient town of Matelica. It takes central position in the main piazza and is a large, white, stone fountain with an octagonal shape.
Built in l587, it is designed around a raised central basin and a large, single pedestal fountain in the middle. Four figures riding dolphins rise up from the water. Three of them are sea-gods, although none of them look particularly god-like or imposing. They look more like they are frolicking around, joy-riding on sea creatures. The most curious one is a mermaid-like woman with her back arched, her chest thrust out and cupping her breasts. Amusingly, jets of water spurt in large arcs from her breasts.
The fourth figure is a large, rather vicious bird on the back of a strange creature. It seems to be angrily pecking out the creature’s eye out but it’s hard to tell.
There’s a local story that if you walk around the fountain 7 times, anti-clockwise, you will be granted a wish. It’s a decent, medium-sized fountain so you will look a bit mad doing it.
More serious decoration is reserved for around the sides. Here you can see the coats of arms of various cardinals and the papal coat of arms of Sixtus V (look for the lion with a sash). Sixtus V was fond of a fountain. In Rome, he had new aqueducts built and ancient ones restored.
A dedication to Cardinal Scipione Borghese, the city's patron, was added in 1619.
Car parking in the piazza tends to diminish the fountain a little. Surrounding cars tend to block the view so that it doesn’t stand out as a central feature in the way it once would have. Large concrete bollards around the base are a practical measure to ensure that no-one reverses accidentally into the fountain but the downside is that people can’t gather and sit around the base as they do in many other towns.

La Fontana ottagonale, risalente al 1587, è ben conservata e presenta quattro raffigurazioni delle divinità marine, rendendo ancor più armoniosa la già bella piazza intitolata a Enrico Mattei.

Non è un capolavoro, tuttavia è una fontana piacevole che arricchisce il bel centro storico di Matelica. Nella vasca sono visibili 4 piccole statue, mentre sulle pareti laterali sono raffigurati alcuni stemmi papali.

Grande fontana che si trova nella piazza centrale della città. Di bell'aspetto e piacevole da osservera, in armonia con i palazzi circostanti.

La fontana di piazza Mattei non regala granché emozioni, né è (giustamente) particolarmente conosciuta: è un monumento che però ben si inserisce nel tessuto architettonico della piazza, per lo stile e la sobrietà.

La fontana si trova al centro della piazza principale, nel centro storico di Matelica. Risulta abbastanza imponente e in linea con l'architettura della piazza stessa e presenta quattro tipiche statue che zampillano acqua.
